As a Dolphins fan, that 2007 Super Bowl win over the Patsies got my respect. I'll root for the Giants against any team other than my Dolphins. That was the low point for the franchise by a mile. The team barely squeaked out 1 win in overtime late in the season to go 1-15. They almost became both the only perfect season team *and* the only 0-16 team (at the time). That horror was coupled with watching hated division rivals march dominantly to almost a perfect season. Only a breathtaking SB win by the Giants stopped the horror of seeing the 17-0 Dolphins topped a 19-0 Patsies. What a relief 😆

I really think starters should play the first half. Maybe not at 100% effort, but they should play. If I was coach I would pull them for the second half. It's just a matter of routine and getting in the football mindset every week. Of course now there is a week off before every superbowl some teams are bound to get out of rhythm. But at least both teams suffer from this problem.

yeah. that car accident to Cam in 2016 and Luke having that major concussion really sealed it. Could of done something in 17 if Gano didnt miss that 29 yarder. (yeah we lost 31-26 but if he hit that we just kick a 46 yarder with 20secs left) I think we could of beat the Vikings but the Eagles were too much. Jags also should have made it to the SB in 17. Anyways, back to the point. We probably could of gone back in 16 if Cam and Luke didnt get concussions, the entire dline, 4/5 of our starting oline, and Shaq Thompson, Kurt Coleman, and Bradberry being out.

I think if your playoff chances are so locked in that you can rest the starters the last two weeks you should give your starters some reps in the last regular season game, with some preseason-like directives for protecting themselves. Ideally you'd want to do this in the second-to-last regular season game so if a player gets a short term injury they should be available in time for the playoffs, but if you have a bye and the opportunity to rest starters for two regular season games, you're talking about almost a month they might not be playing at game speed at all--football is all of five months if you go deep into the playoffs and you're off for seven months. I definitely think taking your starters out for weeks 17, 18, and the playoff bye is a recipe for disaster, even among the most tightly-honed and hard-practicing teams.

Why not have them play a half or even just a quarter in those games? Then that way they’re sharp enough to shake off any potential rust and they wouldn’t be a rusty team for too long at least. They’d have a balance there so they don’t have to necessarily catch up very much to game speed.

Going undefeated is a cool idea but a lot of times that first loss helps more than it hurts. It takes that pressure off to complete a perfect seasom and brings the team back down to earth and shows them they can be beaten so they still have to put in the work. I've seen many teams get cocky and complacent and next thing you know they're losing to bottom feeders they thought they could run over.

This is exactly how I thought about the 1985 Bears. I would rather see them lose one game in the regular season than lose in the playoffs, and that pressure to perform at a perfect level has to be crushing, even for star athletes.

I remember in preseason 2011 reading sports illustrated and they predicted that the Packers would start 13-0 and their only loss would be to Kansas City and would finish with a 15-1 record. I kept that bold prediction in the back of my mind as the season went along. After week 11 many experts said the Giants would be the only team left on their schedule that could beat them. After the Packers won a dogfight on a walkoff field goal, everyone thought that it would be smooth sailing to 16-0. And then came the Kansas City game. Everyone except me in my football pool picked the Packers to win that game but I remembered SI's bold prediction 4 months earlier and took Kansas City. Sure enough, SI's prediction was right. It made it so much sweeter when my Giants played against them again in the divisional round and won soundly.

As a Colts fan, 2005 against the Steelers broke my heart. The guy that returned the fumble was Nick Harper, a pretty solid cornerback for us for a couple years. Fun fact: the night before the game, he got stabbed in the thigh by his wife during a dispute. He may have scored if he hadn’t gotten stabbed.

I think resting your starters is a recipe for disaster. You need to have them play at least half the game so they don't get rusty. Take them out the second half. If you lose then you lose. But testing them for weeks and weeks is bad and will put them in a bad mental space.

Everybody wrote the Saints off that year. All we kept hearing is how good the Colts are and that we hadn't faced a team all year that was as good as the Colts. I saw only one person in the media pick the Saints to win. To be honest though. I think if the Colts had stuck with the run game, you all would've won. We couldn't stop Joseph Addai in the first half but I think the onside kick and then the score coming out of the half putbthe pressure on. Good game. One of the best Superbowls

The whole "resting your starters" thing is overblown. Just as many teams do well after resting them than do poorly. It's the playoffs, so anything can and does happen. @Fries considering the Steelers went all the way and won all of their postseason games (besides that Colts one) by 2 scores minimum, the Colts likely go all the way and win it all. In Payton’s limited action against the NFC champion Seahawks, he went 9 of 12 for 116 yards. His backup was 22 of 31 for 237 yards and a TD. They likely gash them through the air and that takes Alexander out of the game, forcing Hasselbeck to win it with his arm. The only QBs that typically win a shootout against Manning are guys the likes of Brady and Brees.

I think if you are in such a good position with your record after 15 to 16 weeks that you have locked up a bye week, you have to rest the players a bit. I would still have all of the starters begin the game as normal so that they stay in rhythm but no one would be playing longer than a half, and my QB would be out after 1 quarter. I would treat it similar to preseason.

I honestly think the fact that the Patriots’ stark drop in level of play during the 2007-08 postseason was extremely telling of how much they were actually capable of in that one year. Also, as a lifelong Ravens fan who still gets sick to my stomach thinking about the 2019-20 playoffs, I will say that resting your starters before the postseason DEFINITELY has a significant impact.
@BrendanPappas
@BrendanPappas 2 жыл бұрын
@Fries well I’m not saying it happens all the time, I just think it makes sense why the 2011 Packers felt that way and the 2019 Ravens were impacted by it as well. Think about it: our offense had been absolutely on fire that entire year and riding a 12-game win streak. Then after we rest the starters for three weeks, in the divisional round we turned it over three times, never held a lead, and didn’t even manage to score a TD into the fourth quarter. I wouldn’t call it a coincidence that the first stringers looked out of rhythm.

Remember that the Bengals rested most of their starters week 18 against Cleveland and went on to reel off 3 playoff wins to make the super bowl. The Miami victory over the Bears in '85 to kill their perfect season was a stark difference to the previous year when a phantom Defensive Holding Call against Ronnie Lott came at a critical time in the game that enabled Pittsburgh to retain posession and kick the winning FG and end the 49ers shot at an undefeated season. In contrast, Miami kicked the Bears ass in the Bears only loss. It was nowhere near close as the score indicates. There wasn't a time watching that game did I think Miami wasn't murdering da' Bears And Da' Bears were lucky they didn't play Miami again in their super bowl. The 49ers were robbed against Pittsburgh and well, Miami was a better team in '84 than the following year when they beat the Bears. So the 49ers dismantling of the Dolphins in SB XIX counts as the bigger of the two games. Both owned each other in each's championship year. But had they not called holding on Lott on 4th down they stopped em. 49er ball, and as Duane Kuiper says, This Game Is Over!
@DaDitka
@DaDitka 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. I think the Dolphins would have had a decent shot at beating Chicago again, but the question is whether the Dolphins would have been able to adapt to the Bears' changes to their defensive plan against Marino. You are absolutely right that the Dolphins kicked our rear ends badly. The score was 31-7 at half-time. But one of the reasons for this (and I give Shula all the credit in the world for this) was because he took advantage of Duper against WIlber Marshal (I'm pretty sure that was the matchup; I remember it was a WR against a linebacker but don't quote me on this), and they were able to score several times on this. In the second half, Ryan made adjustments and the Bears rebounded, outscoring Miami 17-7 in the second half. But as you said, it was way too late for them to come back. Still, I think it would have been interesting to see what happens on a neutral field where neither team has a fan advantage. It was still fun, though, and I'm glad for the one we have. And I'll be honest, I share Gary Fenick's sentiment that he saw the Miami game as a wakeup call, and they took themselves more seriously after that game was over. If the Bears had gone 16-0, would they still have swept through the playoffs like they did, or would they have gotten tripped up? Given what I saw in their attitudes before the Miami game as opposed to after, I'm not so optimistic.
