When it was free, there were A LOT of $5,000 cars for sale that were 3 years old with low mileage, being sold by someone in the military or serving overseas. Just wire them the money and they’ll definitely not ghost you… Yeah, the scams were out of control. The $5 listing fee helped with that, but for some reason, someone selling a car for $5k-25k didn’t want to pay $5 to list it. You can find cars for sale in the “auto parts” section, where there is no listing fee. And if the seller is scamming Craigslist to save $5, you know you can trust them to tell the truth about the car they are selling… 🤨

So glad you guys got around to this topic. Imagine a first year car, like a '64 1/2 Mustang or '70 Challenger; two owners, 19,300 miles, no rebuild or salvage title. Just a nice, clean, well-cared for car. What would it be worth? Under 10k? No way, right? Well, I had one that fit that description on FB Marketplace for a week. Over 300 clicks and not one legitimate question. Only one American car fits that category; a 1984 Fiero. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Just blows my mind. Find any car that fits that description for under 10K. I challenge you.

No offense but why would I want a first year car? So I can have all the bugs before they got fixed? Yeah an 84 fiero, that's what I really want to spend my limited time on this earth inside.

@@teagancombest6049 Thanks for that perspective. Did I mention that I spent literally nothing driving it for that last 6 years? Under 10K for a reliable second car doesn't sound so bad. Drive it for another 6 years, then sell it for what you paid for it.

Biggest factor in why marketplace is dead is the scammers. It's really really bad right now in Florida. "Deposit" cash app scams and "give me your cell phone number" scams flooded on there. Rest is overpriced junk and complete morons to deal with. I've moved most my selling to eBay. Yea fees suck but no weirdos coming to my house and time wasters.

Marketplace is full of scammers selling "runs and drives great with no issues" trying to title jump. Seriously so much crap on Marketplace is pure crap for almost new car prices, it's nuts. Speaking from experience, sold a shitbox Outback on Marketplace that was for parts only, was falling apart, radiator supports gone, etc, less than 24 hours later it was on sale for 5 times what I sold it for saying it was great and had no issues. That car will kill someone. Tried reporting it to Facebook and of course nothing happened, tried warning people on community pages and sell/trade pages, scammers and a-holes were mocking ME saying I was salty someone was flipping it, when I was just trying to warn it was a deathtrap. It's gotten so bad I said screw it and deleted my Facebook after having it since Facebook launched. Not worth it. Craigslist is just as bad too.

I only title jump because I buy and flip cars to family/ friends/ coworkers. But I at least spend a month fixing a vehicle up and doing shit correct before I let it go. Plus you want to make sure that car runs correctly if you sell it to someone you know, or it will ruin your reputation. Sucks that People don’t care about that anymore.

I sold a 2011 Genesis Coupe to a kid in his 20s and disclosed that it has low compression on cylinder 6 (piston rings). It hesitates when accelerating although he couldn’t replicate it because he drove like a fool. A few days later it’s posted on Marketplace for double the price and listing says no issues. Doubtful engine was rebuilt. My guess is he didn’t register it. Oh and originally I was supposed to trade with him for a 2000 Civic hatch. It was acting weird when I test drove it and he blamed it on a relay and he’ll change it. I told him he could sell it to someone else interested and buy the Genesis if he wanted. The dude that bought the Civic had the transmission blow within a day.

Ive thought about this, heres my head canon theory. It's not one big problem but the knock on effects of multiple small issues all feeding into each other. 1) Everyone who purchased a non new car between 2021 - 2023 is serverly upside down. The market was unboutbly higher for used cars at that point in time and the people who sell their car every few years won't get enough for their old car to justify purchasing a newer car that really has not changed in price. So they are forced to swallow a pretty hefty pill of depressition on a trade in and rolling the debt into the next car or are just keeping the old one due to sunk cost. 2) The 2010 - 2017ish car industry was just awful. Most of the Nissans suffered from CVT issues, Hondas and Mazdas from this era are largely dead if you live in a winter climate from rust, and basically every american made car from this era sucked. So your average 1st or 2nd time buyer is left with alot less options on the used market. Everyone I know in this market is either having to go older or buy new. 3) We are in a reallly weird and turbulent market. The average person has much less buying power for a cash, private sale. So the average person is being forced into keeping their car if they are smart enough to not take the current ridiculous interest rates. But on the other hand I think a smaller portion of the populations buying power has really grown, hence why we are seeing a ridiculous sales for enthusiast cars. 4) Dealers are really making enough money on new cars sales so they are able to sit on used inventory and ask astronomical prices. They have come to the realization that doubling your profit on each car is less work then selling twice the amount of cars. TLDR: Although prices are down in the last few years, the average person has even less cash buying power than that and can't afford the used prices off market place. Instead of not buying a car and driving the market down, they finance one and bring the market up. Since nothing is selling on marketplace for the price they want, people are keeping their old cars. Alongside that, there is just less cars going around because most of them were pretty terrible. Circling back, prices are still too high, no ones got cash, and supply is low

I also want to add that we will most likely see a 2008 style car market crash. A lot of indicators show strong signs of a recession and with so many people having too much auto debt there is a chance that in 10 years we will see a massive amount of neglected repos hit the market.

I kind of believe in dead internet because every time I try to sell a car on Facebook marketplace it's people asking for a phone number or asking for zelle and I have the same issue that feed has even though I'm just outside of Philadelphia and all the cars that are listed are either by people pretending to be individuals but they have 20 cars for sale or it's clapped out crap that nobody wants to buy or it's missing the title and then the outliers are the cars that just get listed and then no one ever responds to messages and so the car sits for sale on Facebook market for 2-3 years. But then oddly enough of all the cars the weird collector or special edition cars from the 90s and early 2000s that nobody wanted to buy for $500 in the 2010s are now selling like hot cakes for 5k+ and then weird examples come out of the woodworks for 20k and no in-between

10:28 depending on the state*** Florida for example you can register them as a side by side, get a license plate and reg sticker, and the best of luck from the DMV on keeping up with traffic.

Marketplace is the only place where I’ve been able to find cars where people will negotiate on price since after Covid. Bought a 120k mile 98 Sentra 5 speed for $2.5k and an 110k mile 08 328i for $4k. Both were owned by old boomers who didn’t want to deal with dumbasses messaging them anymore on fb so they lowered their price close to 20% after haggling. Took weeks for me to find those deals but they’re out there.

If you want deals, you'll be hard pressed to find it on the internet. You can sure but it's hard. The best deals will always come from boots on the ground. Through word of mouth. But that involves social interaction.

I think its a lot of flippers instantly buying any decent deal, than marking the price up right away. People are smoking crack with these prices. I looked for 2-3 years for the truck I wanted.

Its like I always say. "If you cant find a decent car with low mileage and a perfect price range. Gotta ask the family members." Its sad how the internet and people have become after 2008 or later on after cash for clunckers thing went on with tons of old vehicles that could save the used car market or unless im missing something. Seeing how people are with their cars and treat them makes you wanna ask your parents to buy their car to get to places instead of buying a pos that could make you go broke in a few months or years owning that vehicle.

There are plenty of scam cars on Marketplace in my market (2015 Honda Civic for $1800?!?!?!?) I was LUCKY. I got an '03 Element from a wrecker driver who got the car from a military guy that was shipping out and didn't have time to sell it. Less than $3k. Title in hand, needed about $1k in suspension work, but it's sweet! I looked for TWO MONTHS. And I called the guy less than an hour after he listed it. This is in Honolulu.

The amount of people who trade is shocking. Coworker had an old Dakota late 90s. I thought he liked it, no indication he was wanting to off it. One day a couple months off a promotion he drives in with a brand new f150. "where's your old one" "traded it in for $750" Broke my heart, totally would have bought it. Now it's overseas in Africa probably or crushed.

I think fewer people are selling used cars right now (especially in "daily" condition, as Feed's 120k mile cutoff would include) as well because interest rates (and new car prices) are so obscenely high that it just makes sense to keep what you have until things calm down.

What? I have a 28 year old suburban with almost 300K miles on it that runs quieter and smoother than your average "DaIlY ConDiTioN" car because... Basic maintenance. Front end, put stainless brake lines on, new calipers and rotors (Wouldn't even be needed if previous owner kept up), soft lines, shocks, etc. Needs a $150 bearing kit for the engine when I get around to it. The feds need to stop writing laws.
