He was actually on his way to perform at a charity concert at Lakeside Theater at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, New York when he died. The circumstances of why he slowed his car down in the left lane of the LIE is unknown and much speculated about.

Chapin is my favorite singer / songwriter. Truly a man of charity. Gone way too soon.

I like your content. And i think i might have quite a challenge for you. To look at what happened to a band called "hello operator" they disappeared out of nowhere! (For ID purposes they have a song called "i created a monster")

Per the reports I've read, Chapin was in the far left hand lane when he put on his hazards and pulled into the center lane. He pulled out in front of a tractor-trailer that couldn't slow down in time and hit Chapin's car. Both vehicles caught on fire, but the truck driver jumped out and actually pulled Chapin from his burning car. Chapin caused the accident by, for whatever reason--medical emergency, being distracted, missed an exit--and it got him killed. And then his widow had the audacity to sue the truck company and get a huge settlement--despite Chapin driving on a REVOKED license due to numerous traffic infractions! His story is sad, however . . . . Chapin shouldn't have been on the road.
