Back when network TV was all we knew it did indeed feel like that, but that recollection is about something seen through rose color glasses. If you rewatch it today you would realize how absurd that statement is. Go watch Frieren or many other anime to experience something truly well written. Heros relied on hype and anticipation of what will happen next without much thought to the importance of what actually happens. It was all about ratings and keeping you coming back for more. I understand it's a business but it doesn't create an environment conducive to good story telling.

What happened to Heros was it was written by people who were good at getting you excited about characters and what will happen to them but can never deliver on that anticipation. If the writer's strike didn't happen, the show would have lasted longer but ended up disappointing us just like lost. The public was catching on to these kinds of writers by then and the poor story writing due to the strike hastened its end.

As someone who has lived in Japan for a long time, one thing I can point out about this series is that its depictions of the country are woefully caricatural or inauthentic. The streets are completely fake, the sets were designed obviously by people who weren't familiar enough with the country, and all of the supposedly-Japanese characters except Masi Oka (as Hiro) have such thick non-native accents, the actors don't actually speak fluent Japanese or aren't even Japanese, including George Takei (as Hiro's father) and James Kyson (as Hiro's best friend). It's like having French actors play British-native characters on cartoonishly-London streets constructed in a Paris studio, it kept distracting me from the already-unrealistic story.

@@1-eye-willy It being a "moving comic book" has nothing to do with why its supposedly-Japanese characters don't speak fluent Japanese and why its Japanese sets don't look actually Japanese. The real reason is that the production team didn't care enough to make it authentic because it wasn't the focus of the series and the intended primary audience were Americans not knowing better. The Spider-Man movies are a "moving comic book" and its representation of NY is way better, because NY was the focus and the intended primary audience were Americans knowing better.
