Back when network TV was all we knew it did indeed feel like that, but that recollection is about something seen through rose color glasses. If you rewatch it today you would realize how absurd that statement is. Go watch Frieren or many other anime to experience something truly well written. Heros relied on hype and anticipation of what will happen next without much thought to the importance of what actually happens. It was all about ratings and keeping you coming back for more. I understand it's a business but it doesn't create an environment conducive to good story telling.

@bhgemini ooh, gotcha. About half-way through watching this it seemed so familiar I felt like i had heard it word-for-word at some point so i figured it must be an edited re-upload. (This is after id commented.) My new theory is that it IS a re-upload and the story in question was either debunked or was in some way undesirable to the people in question so it got chopped. Just a guess- haven't looked into it in detail.

What happened to Heros was it was written by people who were good at getting you excited about characters and what will happen to them but can never deliver on that anticipation. If the writer's strike didn't happen, the show would have lasted longer but ended up disappointing us just like lost. The public was catching on to these kinds of writers by then and the poor story writing due to the strike hastened its end.

You left out how disappointing the season one finale was. Obviously not everybody thought it was disappointing. Some liked it. But it was a huge topic of discussion at the time. It was like they ran out of money at the very end. And maybe that’s exactly what happened. IDK. But the big fight that all of these individual storylines was leading to… and it was just a relatively-small encounter that happened in an empty city? Where were all the random people walking around at night? Has New York City ever been THAT empty at night?! 😂

Fan service destroyed Heroes. Yes you can blame the writers strike on some aspects of the show but ultimately pandering to the audience. Or what they think the audience wants was its downfall. Keeping characters around long past their usefulness. Keeping characters alive that should have died. Dragging out particular storylines when half a season arc was all that was needed. All to keep internet chat bots happy.

When we had that Total Eclipse of the Sun up here in Canada. I turned to that iconic Eclipse photo from Hero's. You're correct, Season 1 is solid and it was a show I truly hoped would have continued longer than circumstances gave it. Ah well, we can not change the past. We can only hope the "movie makers" of today have some New and Original idea's like we had in the 80's, 90's and the early 00's.

Studio interference where they demanded that changes be made for popularity reasons at the expense of the actual plot. Raise hands; who was shocked to hear that was a significant factor in the decline? The writers strike just revealed the flaws early. But just like Lost before it there were just too many balls in the air for it to work long term. You can have multiple narrative threads but you have to be able to either resolve them in a compelling way, make them inconsequential to the big picture or leave enough breadcrumbs for the audience to be satisfied with their own interpretation.

As someone who has lived in Japan for a long time, one thing I can point out about this series is that its depictions of the country are woefully caricatural or inauthentic. The streets are completely fake, the sets were designed obviously by people who weren't familiar enough with the country, and all of the supposedly-Japanese characters except Masi Oka (as Hiro) have such thick non-native accents, the actors don't actually speak fluent Japanese or aren't even Japanese, including George Takei (as Hiro's father) and James Kyson (as Hiro's best friend). It's like having French actors play British-native characters on cartoonishly-London streets constructed in a Paris studio, it kept distracting me from the already-unrealistic story.

@@1-eye-willy It being a "moving comic book" has nothing to do with why its supposedly-Japanese characters don't speak fluent Japanese and why its Japanese sets don't look actually Japanese. The real reason is that the production team didn't care enough to make it authentic because it wasn't the focus of the series and the intended primary audience were Americans not knowing better. The Spider-Man movies are a "moving comic book" and its representation of NY is way better, because NY was the focus and the intended primary audience were Americans knowing better.
