Back when network TV was all we knew it did indeed feel like that, but that recollection is about something seen through rose color glasses. If you rewatch it today you would realize how absurd that statement is. Go watch Frieren or many other anime to experience something truly well written. Heros relied on hype and anticipation of what will happen next without much thought to the importance of what actually happens. It was all about ratings and keeping you coming back for more. I understand it's a business but it doesn't create an environment conducive to good story telling.

The public was catching on to these kinds of writers by then and the poor story writing due to the strike hastened its end.

Heroes may have helped a few millennials, who had somehow never seen a Star Trek rerun, find out who he was. But lots of those older actors, and musicians too, were getting their careers restarted thanks to a wave of 60s and 70s nostalgia around that time (it comes in waves. The turning point for me was when they nerfed Peter Petrelli and killed off Arthur Petrelli all in one episode. They basically removed the opposing good yin to Sylar's bad yang. The classic never ending good vs evil between two powerhouses that you find in many stories. If you remove one, then you must remove the other. But they don't and Sylar just gets stronger and stronger without Peter around to be able to go toe to toe with him. Then at the same time the only other individual who truly could challenge Sylar and likely restore Peter's abilities while also just being a cool antagonist (Aruther), they freakin' kill. I know things would not go well after that. Before then I thought the show was just fine.

Fan service destroyed Heroes. Yes you can blame the writers strike on some aspects of the show but ultimately pandering to the audience. Or what they think the audience wants was its downfall. Honestly i think series 1 was built so well and while the ending didnt quite hit well its still gripping and this show was before a lot of these Disney Pluse stuff and even before the MCU. It was a Superhero show on tv that wasnt related to DC or Marvel. All the characters were good for the most part and Sylar was actually scary in terms of his kills as well as being in the shadows for a while, Peter felt relatable as a person while gaining powers in a passive kind of way, Hero being a bundle of joy, HRG being seen as a bad guy but actually protecting his daughter who could regenerate, Isaac who could paint the future and i always found the art amazing but painting the future was quite unique at the time and ties everything together in a way. Thats just naming a few characters but the only one i think didnt work was Nikki tbh. She kinda feels forced in and shes mostly away from everyone. The problem was after series 1 i really do think a new cast should have been the best idea with maybe the old characters popping in if the story called for it. The Issues for series 2 is that in series 1 a lot of the story arcs were tied up quite well and coming into series 2 and beyond it felt like they had nothing for them and just wanted to give them something to do. A lot of them could have benefited on being written out and maybe coming back later. Series 2 was also hit by the writers strike and along with a lot of shows were hit hard. Heroes never really recovered from this plus multiple issues

Heroes season 01 was corny and on the nose. And i think that was a strength. It knew what it was and felt genuine. I really liked the way they played with the powers and interactions. Mainly, of course, between Peter and Sylar. You dont see powers like theirs in comics often because they are well...overpowered. But this 2 sides of the same coin power, a man who can learn powers from others, and a man who can steal powers from others, worked great for a hero/villain dynamic. The first time Peter and Sylar interact and Peter turns invisible...just for Sylar to say, "...cant wait to try that one." Ah i just loved it. Time travel shenangians are always fun. Worked in a dual sense with both Hiro and the comic book artist. They did a good job limiting Hiros power so he wasnt just everywhere all the time, spoiling everything. But seeing an aged badass version of Hiro going back in time to say "save the cheerleader, save the world" for a single episode? Chefs kiss. "Save the cheerleader, save the world." Brilliant. Simple. As simple as it is, it may not be something you think of on your own. We all knew Claire was out there, but we couldnt fathom what might happen if Sylar had gotten her power. Also, "How to stop an exploding man"??? A negative to adapting stealing powers. An uncontrollable nightmare. The simplicity of Nathan hsing his power of flight to save the city and be there for his brother really got me in the end. I dont think i ever made it past a few episodes in seaspn 2. But honestly, i didnt need to. Season 1 was a classic like 25 episodes or something like that. Ill always love it.

The #1 thing I hated about Heroes was that half of every episode was recaps, and you could legitimately skip half a season and recap would bring you up to speed completely. The episodes were great, half way in and after, when the episodes were actually happening. I quit watching the show the major of the way into the first season, and it only took watching 6 episodes to know the entire story of the remaining seasons and what the rest of the first. Even then, 3 minutes of those recaps were repeating what i watched or saw in a previous recap. It's like going to an hour long weekly work meeting, where the first half they go over what was said in previous meetings. (Aka torture)

For me, the problem was with the rules. You take a comic book, and you introduce magic, and suddenly I have absolutely no interest in it because they can write literally anything and just have to give the incantation of "magic" for it to be justified. And this is how Heroes felt after that first season. The rules kept changing. Dead characters could come alive again. Or not. And to add insult to injury, the interesting arcs of characters was kind of just dropped. And the annoying bit is that it had so much potential. The bit with Claire Bennett not being able to feel pain and questioning that was interesting. Turn her into someone unable to feel empathy as she just can't experience what everyone else feels. We got to see a bit of stuff with characters who's powers were linked with other people with powers (Syler, the Hatian) - so there was a bit of "The Lost Room" potential in there (why did that never turn into anything more??). There were the brother/sister duo with powers that were linked which could have been really interesting. Like they didn't need to constantly keep changing the rules to do a big one-up-man-ship thing to the show. It was okay for the 2nd season not to be stupidly spectacular or whatever. It could have had good writing instead. THAT would have amazing.

In regards to Sylar getting Claires power, I always kind of assumed it was the timing that mattered. Like if he got them in season 1 it would've been more devastating because a different chain of events would follow, an alternative timeline. But in season 3 there was enough heroes assembled who knew who he was to keep him in check. ... but I really liked that show, so maybe I'm just making excuses🤷😂

Raise hands; who was shocked to hear that was a significant factor in the decline? I do remember being eager to see new episodes, and the decline in quality (and I also remember only watching like one episode of Heroes Reborn).

I’m likely the only one who thinks this, but I really enjoyed S3 of Heroes; I found it better than both S2 and S4. Yes it has its holes but it remains to me, better than all but S1. Loved the whole show however, and I still watch it as a binge series of nostalgia

I was just thinking about Heroes. So many good ideas. I think they were just too damn ambitious. I would have been happy if they focused on a few heroes like Matt Parkman, and have him be a psychic detective for like 5 episode. So many damn changes so quickly.

Heroes is supposedly making a comeback, hopefully it all works out.

I've just watched through all of heroes again including Heroes reborn. Personally I love the whole thing from start to finish and it's a shame it didn't run for a lot longer. Season 1 is neigh on perfect although each subsequent season pales in comparison it is still a good fun watch and much better than many other series. Definitely worth your time and Heroes Reborn is no where near as bad as people say it is.

Reborn was alot worse.

Simple: It was critically wounded by the writer's strike and never recovered.

I could never figure out if the storylines in Heroes were suppose to be a homage or a ripoff of X-Men but i loved the series.

Did we edit out the grunberg story?, there was a wierd cut there right after you introduced him. "Diddy Party" cover up?

It jumpstarted the career of George Takei? Do you mean Masi Oka?..

I wondered this. What a weird take on someone who had been in TV for nearly 50 years at that point.

One of the biggest, saddest casualties of the Writer's Strike. If nothing else it showcased that, no, not just ANY scab can become a competent script writer. Pay your artists their worth, or your beautiful art will wind up in the toilet.

Is this the same video as Heroes : What happened to this show? It took me until the Erick Avari airport anecdote to notice.

Season 1 was like a really good movie that can never be topped. And you knew that every season after that was going to be like a really bad sequel. A good analogy would be the Eagles Hotel California and the band knowing everything the Eagles would put out after that would not be as good

Good video. Whats the name/singer of the "In need a hero" version in the end?

The writers strike just revealed the flaws early. But just like Lost before it there were just too many balls in the air for it to work long term. You can have multiple narrative threads but you have to be able to either resolve them in a compelling way, make them inconsequential to the big picture or leave enough breadcrumbs for the audience to be satisfied with their own interpretation.

Hereos should've been just 1 season. That first seasons was so good.

Yep, great show until it wasn't. One of the first shows I watched weekly every new episode that came out, each week with a buddy of mine.

although season 1 was a beast, the ending was a bit let down.. maybe it had to do with the TV budget, but the last fight did not live up to the building up, the final fight, the end game.
