Nini’s arc was about being independent, feeling stuck in Salt Lake, and following her dreams no matter where they take her or who she loses, so she moves to LA to pursue a music career. Gina’s arc was about never having a stable life, learning to open up to people and accept a permanent home, and prioritize loved ones alongside her ambitions, so she chooses to stay in Salt Lake with her new family. i don’t understand why people complain about Gina “becoming” Nini when their arcs have always intentionally been the opposite of each other. Nini even said in season 1 that she thinks moving around a lot like Gina could actually be nice because you constantly get a fresh start. but Gina hated it and just wanted to stay in the same place permanently for once, which is a familiarity that Nini started to resent (see: Out of The Old). both girls started with the life the other longed for and in the end they both got what they wanted. they also have completed different personalities and react to similar situations completely different (especially in regards to how Ricky acts as a boyfriend, Nini craves a lot of independence while Gina likes his clinginess, Nini hated the idea of coming home for him while Gina wanted him to fight for her to stay, etc etc)

ngl i think it's less of gina becoming nini and more of the writers making it look like ricky projects nini on gina sometimes, like ricky asking gina to write a song and the show doesn't acknowledge at all that gina doesn't write songs and has never written a song before. or having ricky plan to say i love you in the dressing room when the only reason that place is important or meaningful to ricky is because of the original ily scene between rini. it's not rly a gina problem and more of bad writing/lack of originality on their part. there's a lot of cases of bad writing in the show, like ricky's clinginess being a good thing all of a sudden when we all know he clings on romantic relationships because of a lack of self-esteem and heavy abandonment issues. season 4 almost touches on this but fails to have ricky decide what he wants besides a romantic relationship. inconsistencies like that make the last two seasons lacking imo.

Gina was guarded in season 1 because of how she never let herself get close to anyone since she had to move around so much due to her mom's job. As the seasons went on and she actually got to stay in one place for the first time in her life, she opened up more and was allowed to grow into herself without hiding behind any exteriors. That's not her becoming Nini. It's simply how she was able to progress once her life changed.

Nini's exit did not have as big an impact as you're trying to make it seem lmao. I understand missing seeing her onscreen but it's completely unnecessary to dismiss the other characters just to express that. If anything I feel like her being written off only worked in the show's favour because they were able to flesh out some of the other characters stories (which they did a phenomenal job at). And if I'm being honest it always felt like they didn't know what to do with Nini's character outside of her relationship with Ricky which is why she sort of faded into the background after their breakup.

I’m gonna post my hot take (fictional characters, no real actresses) Gina>>>>Nini ​i find so interesting how this whole thing turned out, because i personally loved Gina since season 1 and disliked Nini (as fictional characters) but after Olivia blew up, people are like painting her character like if it was the best thing of the show, and it wasn’t, Olivia is so talented, and her singing great, but the character Nini, kinda suffered of being a Mary Sue, (in my opinion), like in season 1 she gets the lead role and the two boys after her, then she couldn’t keep the show going on for her personal issues but is gifted the entry to that prestigious school. Also she left Ricky, but got angry when she saw him singing to Gina, like she dumped him but don’t want him to be with anyone else. Season 2 she’s on the prestigious college where people would kill to be in, but she’s a free spirit and the system is to rigid for her, then she gets back and her song goes viral, and becomes famous. Like I couldn’t take her struggles seriously when we had ricky with his divorced parents, Gina and her mother’s pressure and moving so often, Ashlyn and Kourtney finding their confidence in the stage, Ashlyn body insecurities with the Belle casting, and Nini: complaining that that elite school is too rigid, in season one and stole Gina’s shoes and other stuff but was portrayed as the relatable protagonist, plus she tried to flush her homecoming dress on the school toilet, c’mon! While Carlos went alone and thought that Seb stood him up, but stared to dance alone anyway, in the born to be brave scene. I felt that the Nini character was given everything and rewarded, and complaining about not so big issues in comparison to other characters with more going on. Like Gina. She had the whole attitude to trying to be the best and working alone for the pressure of her mother, and was distant to people cuz she moved often, literally learned how to open to others and have friends, the pain in earlier seasons for being after ricky while he was infatuated with Nini, and she and EJ rediming themselves after their antagonist roles before, then stepping into the spotlight it’s been a whole journey for her character, although I think that they skipped some parts, like her relationship with EJ was so short, and in S3 was like just the motivator for Ricky to finally realize, and although Rina was the endgame, the whole confession after the documentary was rushed and we could at least have a montage of how they stared dating between S3 and 4 but still, Gina supremacy for me. (And I love how she dances,that’s a plus)

Idk, this was kinda hard to sit through.... I didn't love the constant dismissal of Gina as a character (who was one of the best written characters) and implying that Sofia Wylie is only given the spotlight bc Olivia left. She actually served as more of a lead in S2 than Olivia (while Nini was still a main), and she officially became 2nd billed in S3. Sofia Wylie became more of a lead in S2 because she proved to be the strongest actor of the cast and thus given more material, so it really had nothing to do with whether Olivia was on the show or not

I think it has some of the best music in the show, the performances are good, the characters etc. The only thing I don’t like about it is how rushed the season feels, and that we didn’t get to see North Highs musical, nor did we get to see any of the second act for East Highs. Like the season brings so much attention to the transformation sequence, but we don’t get to see it, which is whack.

And it wasn't because I thought less of Gina as a character. (She was literally my favorite one throughout) I just think when you watch as many teen shows as I did I honestly believed they were going stick with Ricky and Nini because they look like your basic go-to relationship for a teen show. I know a lot of people keep talking about Oliva and her absence after s3. In my opinion though, I didn't think it was a big deal. It was her choice to leave the show. She wanted to focus more on her music career, and that is ok. Trust me, I missed her in s4, but I don't think the show just became absolutely trash, just because she left. They did a good job at leaving her character in the s3 finale. Now, do I think it would have been cool if Oliva had made a cameo for the final season or at least had gotten a few more mentions, yes. But, we can't have everything, and I think that the show still did a fantastic job making Ricky and Gina the new main characters. The show is great for multiple reasons, not just for Olvia. So please stop complaining and just take it for what it is. And recognize that she left the show to focus on her music career, and that she was in no way, replaced!❤

i enjoy your videos usually but these were such bad takes. constantly dismissing the arcs of good characters and ships in favor of the (let’s be real) mediocre first season is so strange to me. i fell in love with the show when the first season came out but it is so clear that the show gets better as the seasons progress, whether it’s the music, the writing, or just the overall vibe that they’ve created. im a fan of olivia and it was sad to see her leave the show, but in all honestly nini’s character wasn’t being done justice, especially given the amount of screen time she had. characters that were previously built only on stereotypes were now given the time to have meaningful storylines that highlight important topics like anxiety, body dysmorphia, and sexuality. the constant comparison of gina to nini makes no sense at all when both characters could not be more different from one another. gina’s arc and development have been in motion since season one and she isn’t suddenly taking nini’s place, she’s been closed off for a reason and is able to take down her walls once she realizes that the people in this community care for her and she cares for them. the spotlight being on her absolutely makes sense when looking at her overall arc and is not the product of lazy writing. rina being the same as rini is disproven by the show every chance it gets by putting the characters in situations that show how rina is able to overcome them the way rini was not able to. the entirety of season 2 makes it clear that ricky and nini are not good for each other and they felt like they couldn’t be the people they wanted to be in that relationship. ricky and gina’s constant support for one another, literally starting in season 1, shows how they are exactly what the other person was looking for. i really don’t think you’re reading all this and i don’t mean to come off so defensive but it was just a little disappointing to hear all the development of this show get discredited.

tbh, i don't think Gina is a second version of Nini. she already had a huge part in the show but it wasn't noticeable because Ricky was focusing on Nini most of the time. when Ricky and Gina started to become friends, her whole backstory with her mum and brother and moving all the time was revealed... she had a fleshed out backstory so it was obvious to me that she'd had a huge part later on. Nini herself doesn't have a fleshed out backstory. the only thing we know of her past is she and Ricky were childhood besties. Nini didn't have any problems in her life nor a backstory. Ricky and Gina did and their backstories blended well. Imo, Gina is more interesting than Nini (no hate to Olivia or Nini of course!). Nini is just a casual girl who's talented and gets the main part in the musical. i think that Nini leaving just made it more obvious how big of a role Gina had, not that Gina was a Nini 2.0. Plus, Rina makes a lot of sense. By the time they got together, they had some character development. Ricky stopped putting his needs and wants first in relationships and started communicating with Gina unlike when he was with Nini. And Gina stopped being closed-off too. she started to open up to more people and stopped being the, quote, 'intimidating new girl'. I think she only acted out because she was used to changing her personality every time and got sick of it so she stopped caring eventually because she knew she'd just move to another school anyways. Anyways, they both had a lot in common. they both understood change and it affected them a lot. Ricky was used to people leaving him (like his mum and Nini) and Gina was used to leaving people (like every time she moved). Once they met and got together, it proved they'd overcome the fear of change. it meant they trusted each other too. Ricky got together with someone who was prone to moving all the time and Gina got together with someone who she's most likely to leave (to leave in the sense that she'll take acting jobs all over the world rather). when it came time for Gina to leave Ricky to go to NZ, they were both okay and genuinely happy for each other, proving they both improved as characters. S1 Ricky would have told her to stay with him despite it being her dream and s1 Gina wouldn't have opened up to him at all. she probably would have left without saying goodbye. probably wouldn't have tried to stay either. They learned to love each other despite the risks and fears because they understood each other. that's all. sorry for the long comment :')

I just wanna start by saying I love both your channels so much!!! But I don’t agree with a lot of y’all’s takes. First, I don’t think Gina and Nini are similar at all. Gina has depth, trauma, and complicated dynamics. Nini was pretty basic. Second, I don’t think the show got and better or worse without Olivia. I personally enjoyed it just as much without her as I did with her. Nini isn’t that interesting and the other actors shine just as bright making Nini not be missed for me at least. Third, Gina and Ricky are by far one of the most beautiful love stories in the show. Both of them started off the show in a bad place and their growth brought them together in a way that’s really sweet. Fourth, I don’t agree that Ms. Jenn and mr Mazarra are the only good ship. I think that Gina and Ricky, and Maddox and Ashlyn are very cute and interesting.

Hsmtmts is the best show EVER!! I thought season 4 was so good and that they ended the series really well. Some of the writing was questionable this season, but a lot of it was too brilliant. This show means the absolute world to me. The characters, the messages, the authenticity. There actually was a British girl in HSM 3 played by Jemma Mckenzie-Brown! Her name was Tiara Gold and she was a foreign exchange student from London. She was Sharpay's assistant who later tried upstaging her by singing "A Night to Remember" but was unsuccessful. So Dani was playing Tiara that's why she was singing with Courtney (Sharpay) during that scene.

I love this vid! I would say the only prob I have with it was that you called the college Courtney visited a loser college. Since season 1 came out, the HSMTMTS fandom has been terrible toward Gina played by Sofia Wylie and Kourtney played by Dara Renée. For starters, Kourtney as a character was nothing more than a stereotype (the Black best friend) for the entirety of season 1 and 2. For those 2 seasons, most of what Kourtney did was support Nini. She barely got storylines of her own. With Gina, the fans have been nasty toward her character and the actress as a result of her character being a potential love interest for Ricky, something the writers have built up since season 1. So to claim that Gina is the new Nini and to be upset that Nini left when fans were terrible to the actress who played Gina because they thought she was "stealing" Ricky away from Nini, and when Nini PREVENTED Kourtney from ever getting a storyline of her own is weird. Gina is her own character and it's evident. Kourtney as a character got tremendously better when Nini left. She was allowed to shine on her own. I think it's incredibly tone deaf to not consider how TV shows and fandoms treat Black characters and actors. And it's even more odd to dismiss their characters to prop up a non-Black actress who left of her own volition. Sofia Wylie is incredibly talented. Do not dismiss her becoming a lead to just "oh she only became one because Olivia left" when this was always the show's trajectory.

Idk how you think the fandom is against Gina in any way. The whole comment section of this video is filled with comments like yours. All the fans have come to this video to defend Gina. She is obviously the fandom’s fave character (just look at how massive rina twitter is). Instead of commenting on anything else in this summary, basically every comment is focused on the brief comments they made that compared her to Nini. Anyone mad about Gina left after season 3, trust me.

34:45 The funny thing is… there IS a British girl in HSM3😂😂😂 I absolutely loved Gina and Rickys relationship. Wayyy better than with Nina. I also liked how they had other plots with other ppl but the whole cheating thing and everyone coming out just for the convenience of it was stupid. The whole “Gina is literally Nina” is stupid and I think Olivia R. leaving the showed really helped the show progress. It also brought out Sophias’ character (Gina). She has become more open to others and she’s just a different person because of her character growth overall. I think my favorite season was probably the first and a bit of the 3 just because I laughed and screamed the hardest. I’m glad I got to experience the while show and I love my girls Gina and Kourtney throughout. Shout out to my bfs Ricky and EJ who I loved since the first episode 😂❤

@28:17 Keyan mentioned Ricky and Gina did not really interact much in the first season, which is not true. They interacted a lot in the first season. The Skatepark, Homecoming, Thanksgiving, etc. They set up their romantic very early onto the show, but yeah, when Olivia left, Gina did start to fully become Nini 2.0 for better or worse. I am sure the original intention for Season 3 was not to break up Gina and EJ so early into their relationship.
