In this video:
Over his lifetime, Howard Hughes’ wallet became one of the fattest of his time. It isn’t known exactly how much he was worth at the time of his death, but ten years before he died, he was forced to sell his shares in the airline company TWA. The payout? $546 million (about $3.8 billion today), estimated by some to have been about 1/3 of his net worth.

It is also just as revolting to witness the greed and "free for all" that you will be witness to right right after a relative passes away...especaially regardless of a will.I seen people come directly from the hospital and descend upon the home and start grabbing possessions, furniture and even canned goods and linens- you name it, before the persons even cold.I plan to lock the doors and call the cops on anybody who tries this when my mother in law passes - we live here and I'm her caregiver since she won't leave her home and none of these other "great relatives" ( that she thinks so much of and don't give a flick about her).Because they've already been walking around here in front of me , and her too, ficussingvthiscorcthat theyvwsnt when grandma is gone..It never ceases to amaze me just how base and low some people can be.

The story of Melvin Dummar (the service station attendant who allegedly rescued Hughes in the desert and was the subject of the fictionalized movie Melvin and Howard) is really interesting on its own. While the will was an obvious forgery riddled with mistakes Hughes would have been unlikely to make even while hastily hand writing it, evidence did later emerge that Dummar may well have had the encounter with Hughes that he claimed even though many had doubted the story.

One of the more crazy HH company stories is how a hotel he owned called the Landmark had a gas leak, so the TV station he owned sent reporters to report on it, and the security guards at the Landmark beat the shit out of them. Two separate things owned by the same guy had a physical conformation. Granted HH had been dead for a year at this point. But it goes to show how much of the city he controlled. Another better example was the filming of the James Bond film, Diamonds are Forever. A scene required the streets of Las Vegas to be cleared. Albert Broccoli knew HH and called him up about it. Within two hours the cops arrived and cleared the streets.

I worked for the Howard Hughes company, SUMMA, in the early 1980s doing computer support at his hotel/casinos. Very interesting culture within the company even after his death. He owned practically every piece of vacant land in and around Vegas. Once the will was settled, signs went up all over town selling the small plots of land. Every one of his hotels have been torn down and new resorts built on that land. Bugsy Siegel, Howard Hughes, and Steve Wynn forever changed the face of Vegas.

I love how everyone tries to tiptoe around the fact that she was very obviously a lesbian, due to the times being a pioneering woman aviator AND gay would have crippled her career so she kept it quiet

I first became interested in Amelia Earhart when I stumbled across a book about her when I was in grade school. I was fascinated by her as a unique woman of her time: her level of intelligence, her accomplishments &, of course, her mysterious disappearance. But what was obvious to me at that tender age was that she was most likely a lesbian. Not that it was important or in any way enhanced or diminished her as a person. But it may have explained what drove her to do the things she did. Now, 30+ years later, I still happily listen to or read stories about Ms. Earhart. But not one mention of the "L" word, either in speculation, proof, or refutation.

Not many at the time thought of her as lesbian. My mother, born on Women’s Suffrage Day, 1919?, met Earhart while a student at Purdue University; Amelia worked as a career counselor. Mom admired her deeply and even pursued a pilot’s license after her nursing career, a nod to Amelia, I believe. Mom raised me as if I was Amelia, free to be a “tomboy” as it was called in the 50’s and 60’s, without a negative value or reference to sexuality. (Now urban dictionary says a tomboy is another name for lesbian. This sexualization of personality types is stupid and reflects a fetish for imagining the sex lives of strangers.) Amelia was slow to prioritize a relationship because she had some opportunities that couldn’t wait. For the critical comment below about how she refused so many of Putnam’s proposals, this video does offer a quote from Amelia admitting her love for GP finally, before she died at age 39. This story didn’t mention it, because the focus is on the HH story, but Amelia’s romance deprioritization didn’t mention that her husband, publisher/promoter George Putnam, was making money promoting her flights so books could be sold about them, including the one she disappeared on. But nowadays people just focus on what they assume was her sexuality, without even thinking perhaps she was simply mostly asexual, had other options for ways to have fun.

a facile and dubious assumption. i'd call her a bohemian, a free thinker. did her letter telling how she came to love her husband mean nothing to you? are you the type who "spots" them and makes snarky comments to his pals?
