So many of these "WTF happened to" videos focus on a film that had behind the scenes issues or were catastrophic bombs in theaters and we dissect what went wrong, but every so often we here at Joblo like to examine what went right with a movie. In 2019, a movie seemingly came out of nowhere to become a cultural milestone that not only sparked controversy but also broke records. Sit back and put on a happy face as we figure out just WTF Happened to Todd Phillips' Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix in his Oscar-winning role!
Joker was a film that no one seemed to want when it was announced, yet two creative forces, completely separate of each other, desired to make a low budget film set in the world of comic books that really took a deep dive into the character. In a world where comic book movies based in continuing universes seem to be starting to grow stale, Warner Brothers along with Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix took a huge risk in presenting a different vision to the world. The results would be one of the biggest films ever made.

I recently rewatched after 4 years of never coming back around to it, and it's definitely a well crafted drama heavily inspired by the likes of "Taxi Driver." Todd Phillips declining the upfront director's salary in order to bet on himself and get 10% of the film's total gross ($100 million payday) is one of the ballsiest gambles in film history.

Many people who dislike this film dislike it for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the film itself, and when you see a lot of their criticisms, you realize that many of them don’t even know why they dislike it other than they were told to.

How is someone told to dislike it? Lol. I'm one of the biggest Joker fans & i didn't really like it the 1st time i saw it. Wasn't no Batman, or any other comic characters. They coulda made this film about a joe blow lunatic & people that ain't comic book fans wouldn't know the difference....
@NelsonStJames
@NelsonStJames Жыл бұрын
@@aceloco817 Your stated reason for not liking the film is legit and a comic fan could easily watch the film and see where you were coming from. When you hear people repeating the same things over and over like "the film was made for incels" something that is only subjective opinion that they can't even name a specific scene that gave them that impression, and you quickly realize that they are mimicking stuff they got from their echo chamber, and probably didn't even watch the film. Also bad movies come out all the time and few people even remember them after a month. That you can still find people that out of the blue will start ranting about the Joker and saying what a terrible film it was shows that they dislike it for more than simply thinking it's a bad film. Nobody brings up Steel, WW '84 or Birds of Prey that frequently -- all of which are arguably worse films than The Joker. This film bothers people on some ideological level.

Minor correction at 15:36 The dark knight shooter wasn't dressed as the joker, nor did he ever say "Im the Joker" when he was caught. I lived in the South Bronx when Joker was filmed and released. While the mass of tourists coming to the middle of the hood drove a lot of us nuts, when we went to see that movie on opening weekend, we actually loved seeing so many recognizable neighborhoods where they filmed, from the stairs to the Bedford Park Boulevard stop on the 4 train. It was a great movie-going experience, and Joaquin Phoenix deserved that Oscar. 👍🏽

While I infinitely appreciate that you didn't go the same way as many youtubers and pretended that John Wayne Gacy "Dressed like a clown to kill his victims", let it be clear that he wasn't a professional clown either. He'd dress as a clown to entertain children during social events and such as he was seen (or at least wanted to be seen) as a pillar of the community to a certain extent.....That photo of First Lady Rosalynn Carter and John Wayne Gacy in 78 didn't happen for no reason. Gacy wanted to be seen as something as the good guy he was not...Just like when he'd invite police officers following him to come inside and have a drink...

This was a shockingly good movie, but it's not really a Joker origin story so much as a movie about a guy losing his mind and choosing a clown motif. He was nothing like the "Clown Prince of Crime," but he was still pretty cool. The Batman and Gotham elements are incidental at best. Hell, I don't even know who this "Thomas Wayne" guy was supposed to be, but he definitely wasn't the canonical brilliant doctor.

My biggest concern with the upcoming sequel is the expectation that it's going to be a full-on, 100% Joker movie and I have a feeling that is not what we are going to get. Instead, it will bounce back and forth ala Godfather II with present day Arthur aka Joker and the 1950s-80s, exploring EVEN more of his backstory, as a child, growing into an adult. Seeing more of his struggles, socially, physically, and mentally. Honestly, I hope I am dead wrong as I personally, do not really care to see that. Just give us a Joker movie but with lots of fun songs.

I was in a todd Phillips production that was filming in an LA nightclub and I can confirm that extras were not treated well....I did background acting for years and that was the only set that served cold box lunches and ordered pizza last minute. Unfortunately it was also a long shoot that lasted from morning to 3am and that's all they served for the whole shoot. It made me wonder if Todd hates extras or if it's the companies he works with.

I always believed that the only death was Murray. I base this off the dance. Throughout the movie after killing Arthur likes to do his dance. Then after killing Murray, Arthur begins to dance, but it is nothing like his graceful dances before. This is because the prior graceful dances were in Arthur's head, and when Arthur finally felt the courage to actually dance it was awkward and disjointed, and he quickly stops, somewhat annoyed that it was not graceful like he had always imagined. Arthur had been introverted the entire movie, so it fits that he was fantasizing about what he would like to have done in that situation. And the final dance is the dance of an introvert trying to express himself.

What they should've done for a sequel to Joker is do a faithful adaptation of Brian Azzarello's Joker. We'd get Phoenix as a fully realized Joker, we'd get other Bat villains and we'd get Batman without having to put focus on Batman(in the book, he's a shadowy figure shown only in silhouett/obscured lighting and we're only meant to hear his voice). Todd Phillips could've made a great film out of that Graphic Novel.

@@TheIgisas the story is told from the perspective of a henchmen who becomes Joker's #1 guy. So we see how horrifying the Joker is from a henchmen's point of view. We'd also see Batman from the criminals point of view, see why criminals fear him, we never really get that with Batman in film because we're getting see things on Bruce's side& not so much on the other. I just think it would be kinda cool to see Batman through a different lense, plus it wouldn't matter who's playing Batman because of how he's portrayed in that book. All you need is someone who looks intimidating in a Batsuit and someone(different actor)doing the voice.

I am pretty sure the movie was not suppose to be a joker movie but a general criminal movie. They decided to make it about joker later after the script was complete. I am surprised Martin Scorsese produced the movie considering he hates comic book films. Its funny he is willing to work on a super villain movie with hardly no CGI. It was basically a Taxi Driver remake but interesting. I kind of thought Robert Deniro being a co actor was a dead give away.

Though while I agree this film is great, it really wouldn't be able to exist without Taxi Driver or King of Comedy. For a younger audience this is fantastic but if you've seen Scorsese films, this feels more like a glorified homage to Scorsese.

Everyone loved this movie. I liked it. But it’s literally a rip off of cab driver and they had the balls to added Robert De Niro lol

How can you pretend that this guy's the real me. This guy is a character I created. Just like the one in suicide squad. They base both on me.

Joker was a good film. Joaquin gave a really good performance but man Ledger was on another level. This movie had some good parts like the dancing on the stairs and the talk show scene.

Just my opinion, great performance from Phoenix but its not a very good film, its empty and a complete rip off of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. I think Scorsese only didn't sue because De Niro got a part in it!

Extremely empty. When I hear people praising this film so much of it is head canon or projection, the audience fills in the emptiness of the movie by assigning stuff to it which simply isn’t in the actual film itself. And yeah it’s bizarre how much people praise it’s originality when it’s a complete rip off, I can only assume it’s because a younger audience never saw the movies it stole from. Tbh I even think phoenix acting whilst good is overrated. It’s like the Oscar bait trope of playing mentally ill people or drastically changing appearance automatically equals great acting.
