Man, that's rough. Shingles sucks. It's caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same that causes chickenpox, which can be dormant for decades, but stress can cause it to reactivate. It hurts so badly because it infects nerve endings in the skin. Hope you recover fully!

Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes varicella (chickenpox). Primary infection with VZV causes varicella. After a person has varicella, the virus remains latent in the dorsal root ganglia. Clinical Overview of Herpes Zoster (Shingles) - CDC

Hope you're feeling better, Joe! Stress can really do weird shit to your body. It can trigger the most random things. I used to get really bad eczema on my eye lids after every time I cried or even washed my face. They would get insanely itchy, puffy, and swollen. Then when healing they would get all crusty and would peel. I would get itchy bumps on my fingers too. Just a weird stress response.

I started reacting crazy bad to crabgrass of all things- my immune system is really spicy and I dealt with my grief and anger over my brother’s passing by hand weeding every bit of crabgrass from our property, over the course of two weeks. Then the next time I went to my friend’s farm, I had a bonkers reaction, had to get meds, kept repeating all summer until I realized it was crabgrass. “The body keeps the score.” That’s a book that’s been around a while, good read on how to help you manage the physical side of long term stress and trauma.

Oh man, I had shingles on the left side of my face and went to the clinic within an hour. Luckily it escaped eye damage. For a month, I avoided contact with people. I had the intense burning feeling for 3 to 4 months. I had dead spots where the nerves died. It lasted about 3 years. Finally after that it got much better. I don’t feel it anymore but it took years to fully recover. I feel for you, bro. Keep on keeping on!

I think this is the reason I keep a small strip of Benedryl tablets in my pack along with Tylenol, and a couple of old folks tablets. Hope you feel better soon Joe! I had shingles 3 years ago on the right side face, chin and back of the neck and ear. My neck and jaw hurt so bad I thought I had tetanus! None of the medication helped that I could tell. When the pain subsided the itching started, I’d wake up at night scratching behind my ear like a dog! I never thought it would go away, but it did finally! It’s the chicken pox virus that you had as a kid, lies dormant, then attacks your nerves years later. People that have never had the chickenpox can catch that from people with shingles, which my granddaughter did, even though she was vaccinated against the chickenpox. Ask your doctor about the 2 shot vaccine, shingles can come back.

Had the same thing happen to me after a family member passed and we almost lost my little sister at the same time. Ended up with shingles across my shoulder and up the back of my neck. Went far to late to the doctor for much treatment. I was able to work through it, but wouldn't wish it on anyone. Certainly could not imagine getting out of the woods and driving with it on my eye. Bad news though Joe, the pain sticks around even after it isn't visible. It did ease off but I did have pain in my neck for years and still can sometimes when stress is getting real high. It's been almost two years since I had face shingles. Half my face still feels numb and itch constantly. The headaches at the start were no joke, but what came after almost killed me. The itch was so intense and unrelenting! Every second of every day, no rest. I looked like a zombie; half my face a big self-inflicted wound. I was starting to get suicidal. I didn't know how much longer I could take it. I drank until I passed out every day in order to be able to sleep. Man, those were tough times. I hope you fare better!

Been there. Was diagnosed as a type I diabetic the year before I went to college. Freshman year was a little stressful. Resulted in being diagnosed with shingles. Puffy face but worst was the attach on the back of my neck going down my spinal column. Had the chills and wrapped up in a blanket to brevent any breeze blowing on the sore on my neck which was the most pain I have ever had.

Joe, I got shingles when I was getting out of the Marine Corps, the stress of going back home and not having a plan/future into the unknown! I was 25 when i got out, my symptoms were a rash on my stomach, Navy Doc gave me a ton of pain killers. I didn't like how they made me feel but I also wasn't in any pain or anything, maybe a slight headache.

Oh my...I knew as soon as I saw your forehead you had shingles...I knew because I had almost the same symptoms before I was diagnosed. Unless you have had shingles around your eyes and forehead you cannot fully appreciate just how painful it is...Hope you are now fully recovered. ❤

Just went through it bro! Had it all over. Take it easy, it took its tole on my organs. I scarred with minimal picking and had it for weeks. It’s been a lot more common in younger folks since 2019… that other virus

I'm so sorry to hear about your brother.💔 I lost my brother to cancer eight years ago and I miss him every day. I never heard about having shingles on your face - that must have been so painful! My husband had shingles around his middle and it was horrible. I couldn't believe he got dressed and went to work every day, but to have been misdiagnosed before you went on a trip is terrible. Sending you positive thoughts.

My sincere and deepest condolences for the passing of your brother. We all wrap ourselves within the arms of our families and their love and the passing of one of them leaves a hole within ourself. That hole broke out in your shingles. I am so sorry.

I had shingles that wrapped around from my chest to my back covered in blisters and taking care of my 8 month old daughter and I can say for myself that shingles is way worse than giving birth for me. Glad to see you doing better God bless

I had shingles- remember, give your face time to heal - and even if some marks will still be there and someone would ask, just firmly stick to the story of marks being the result of you fighting with 3 bears ;)

Stress can absolutely cause shingles to flare. I had a case of shingles shortly after I started college. Doctor said it was stress that brought. (Also i have an autoimmune condition that makes it easier for shingles to happen). Nerve pain could go on for months. Im so sorry to hear about your loss.

I can't believe you were able to hold out as long as you did! I had shingles on my face a month after getting the vaccine! It is a latent chicken pox virus that lays dormant until you are under a lot of stress so it is a virus. I'm glad you are feeling better. I wound up with a scar on my face too!

Man i wouldn’t have guessed that but as soon as you said it.. I was like dang.. yup and shingles are so painful. If you ever had chickenpox then you have the virus it’s just dormant. Sucks man bc you’re always gonna have outbreaks now or most people do. I do and it sucks. Sorry to hear bro. Hang in there! Best thing to do is to treat break outs as fast as possible going forward!

Sending love and prayers for you and family. I hope the docs checked you out thoroughly. Sometimes it is only stress. Chicken pox is the start of it. Dormancy until a mental stressor event to your body or a stressful physical attack type event that your body is battling against will encourage shingles. Or both at the same time. My father in law got a fence sprinter on the palm of his hand. Treated wood splinter caused an infection. Then the shingles on his left chest to back area came on him fast. Stay safe man!
