🌞🌻ABOUT THE CHANNEL🌻🌞
Bored of the usual vanilla, ‘Pollyanna-esque’ allotment/gardening vlog formats that saturate KZbin, we decided to start our own, unique channel in 2023. Follow the adventures of our family as we navigate life on two allotment plots based in Devon in the UK. The Allotment Family Diary offers a light-hearted, realistic and informative look at the daily running of two large allotment plots. Chocked with dry-wit and lovingly edited, we film hours of footage each month to bring you weekly episodes that document life at our allotment plots, and sometimes outside of them.
🌷🌻ABOUT THE ALLOTMENT FAMILY🌻🌷
Tilly and Nick have maintained their plot for almost ten years now, and Tom (their son), Han (Tom's wife), and Flo (Tom and Han's daughter) acquired theirs in May 2023, with a plot extension in Feb 2024. Look forward to seeing Alfie (an elderly lurcher) and Tor (a young Romanian rescue dog) joining us in our diaries, as well as our 6 chickens (new additions to the Allotment Family), and various stray cats and other wildlife that call the allotment their home.

Tom thanks for taking us along with you. Sharing the changing season and harvests. My corn is done, I'm slowly trimming it down and it's free chicken feed! Did the same with the watermelon vines. Cut it up small and watch the Chicken Drama! I've started harvesting my tomatoes once they get a nice blush on them. Let them finish ripening in doors away from the critters! I need to see if I can get seeds for the moon tomatoes you have. So interesting. Loved Han's hair!

I've told Tilly off for giving last year's corn to the chickens. It's too tasty for them to eat! But seriously, it is funny watching them bundle in and hustle each other for the good bits! Would certainly recommend giving the Black Moon a go. It's not as sweet as some varieties, but oh so juicy, and looks great too! Tysm for watching :)

Plenty of highs and lows when growing….im growing some good heritage tomatoes this year…like you I’ve got a KZbin ..IM IN THE SHED…great to be able to look back for the years you’ve been on the allotment

Totally agree. Even watching back on videos we did a few months ago, it's fantastic to see the growth on the plot in what is really a very short amount of time. I'd love to get some heirloom tomatoes on the grow one day, perhaps even next year. Any advice for fruits with a distinctive flavour? Tysm for watching :)

@@AllotmentFamilyDiary well there’s a tomato I grew last year..orange type ..from BAKER CREEK SEEDS/RARE SEEDS..from USA ..called Dr wyches..amazing texture..sweet…fleshy…this year I’m growing a strange one called DRAGON…CHEROKEE PURPLE ( baker creek )…I’ve been gifted so many new ones off pages on Facebook…for a stamp envelope… I did the norm when I started but then wanted to try and grow some with a history behind them…growing 8 varieties this year..about 30 plants..trying to go for 1 of each once I build a good collection up… luckily I bought a 25x12 polytunnel in 2017..best thing I ever bought to extend the season

I am always cutting stems when I think I’m pruning 🤦‍♀️, especially the squash they look so alike. Sorry the blight has arrived 😢, we are very lucky so far we have not had it for years 🤞🤞🤞. 😮 blight toes 😂😂. August is my time to track what did well and what I won’t grow again. Plus removing plants and making changes for the season ahead. Fab update sorry about the camera necessity it is a changing world and not always for the better. Have a simply awesome day and happy growing, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

Somehow Tilly has managed to stop the blight spread by cutting back the plants, although we feel it may just have slowed the spread. Time will tell I guess. We’ve invested in more cameras, which is extremely sad but I guess necessary nowadays, but I feel for people that aren’t as tech savvy and simply have to put up with it. I hope we catch them to benefit everyone at the site. Tysm for watching, Ali and have a great week ☺️

You now have pea straw, compost or cut and drop, my thief or thieves are sparrow's, it's still winter here in New Zealand, they are coming through the vents of my tunnel house and eating the spinach and lettuce, thought it was slugs, bar the sparrow's are defecating everywhere, have to push shade material into the top vents each day. Dug some yams up and mice damage, dug them all up.

I watched an another KZbin saying we should chop the peas and broad beans plants and leave the roots in the soil because they have these tiny bubbles in their roots which is very good for the soil….🤷‍♀️

@@vesiletekas5927 Interesting! I’ve not of this until now, but will certainly read up on it. Although I didn’t show it, fortunately I dug all the roots in with the soil that was left anyway. So if this is correct I’ve inadvertently done the right thing hehe. Tysm for watching ☺️

Would like to give the bucket method a go someday. I've seen some good results. Generally I've been doing it the way the old veterans do at our site, following their advice of course, but as we become more accustomed to growing, I'd like to think we'll try some new methods down the line. Tilly has always been great with growing monster carrots, so I'm leaving them for her to rustle up for us now haha. Ty for watching and commenting :)

@@AllotmentFamilyDiary I’ve actually just sown more this week…I find the purple carrots are bigger seed so easier to individually sow in the bucket instead of thinning out…problem I had was I was growing then transferring..not relizing I was disturbing the tap root…this year I did 3 buckets ..one Half homemade compost/half sand…one just homemade compost..one peat compost…peat compost kept drying out to quick to allow germination so got chucked…other 2 germinated the same ..so the new ones I’ve done is just pure homemade compost…hopefully I’ll have some for Xmas dinner

Great tomatoes you harvested, i hate thieves- just lazy buggers is what they are, the carrots are not too bad- edible still♥ Although the majority of the 10,000 known species of millipedes are beneficial, certain species are pests of crops, including potatoes, sugar beet, carrots, sweet potato, cole crops, strawberries and peas and beans. Yours looked like young millipedes - not worms.

Ty, Anne! I had my suspicions about millipedes as have read they too like to have a good old munch on carrots. Managed to peel a few carrots and get the good bits in a pie. Went down well with the family! TY for watching :)
