In 77 my mom and dad went to see Star Wars came home so excited by it, mom took me the next day to see it. Since then I’ve been a fan regardless of the quality or quantity of films, toys,books,or comics. Star Wars has been there since I was 5 years old and I’ve been able to pass on my love of the series to my kids. Heck I’ve even helped my wife who thought it was stupid become a Star Wars fan. ( I told her there was a Bigfoot flying a UFO and being from the South that’s two great tastes that taste great together ! So climb on board and enjoy ) Everyone has opinions and unfortunately now because of the internet we have to hear ALL of them. I was fortunate enough to see the Star Wars through their eyes, their excitement and how they love the stories just as I did so long ago.

Hey JM, I remember Starlog magazine in the 80’s... I also think that your take on Star Wars is the most rational one. Keep doin’ what you’re doin. Your deep dives into Star Wars lore (did Elvis watch SW in 77? Is the landspeeder remote an action figure?) You may have the most intelligent and engaging take on SW lore today, and I get hooked in by you’re approach to fandom. Maybe if we could all approach our individual fandoms, be they Star Wars, or Dune, or Golden Girls or Diff’rent strokes or whatever with the same objectivism that Junk Man approaches it, maybe we could all enjoy it a little more. Junk man brings up some truly bizarre thought experiments around SW merchandising that I never knew I would have been interested in until JM brought it up. Honestly, JM’s approach to fandom has made this fun for me. Keep doing what you’re doing, and use that big old brain under your snaggle tooth cap to make this fandom thought provoking and relevant to a grown man’s creativity and curiosity

The problem with Star Wars fans is that it's a collection of people who don't understand that it's been 40+ years and the world has changed. Older fans can't wrap their heads around the changes in the last four decades. Younger fans can't understand that the way it's been their whole lives isn't how it always was.

I think social media channels bring the worst out of people by now for the most part. I think Mark Hamill is a good example, he seems to live in a bubble by now, consumed by tweeting about politics. It's really tiring times, for Star Wars but also in general it seems like a certain amount of people went totally nuts. I grew up right between the so called "Dark Times" of Star Wars and when it got rejuvenated in the mid 90s and I'm not gonna lie: I miss those times. All of this bombardment of material combined with personal senseitivities are really sucking out the fun of it.
@martoto774 жыл бұрын
My opinion about Hidalgo is that he attracts lots of questions about lore and intent regarding things that are in the canon and/or left to our imagination. He appears to try to accommodate all those questions but people always try to jam their head canon in there and try to get him to put a stamp of legitimacy to their take on things. It’s when he tries to push back on those attempts that people become resentful and it starts getting chippy. Then, inevitably, the drama begins and it’s all heading towards “These people hate Star Wars fans and therefore they clearly hate Star Wars and that’s why everything sucks. I know better.”

We stick time love and in some cases lots of money into our projects to just get ignored and gain nothing for our efforts as people just want to watch negative videos on Star Wars lately, if you have tried to make something for fellow Star Wars fans to enjoy only to be ignored it is soul destroying!!!! I'll be very honest with you. I just watched junk man I have not seen the Disney trilogy and I am never going to. Personally I hope the franchise gets shelved, I hope it fails and gets put away and they stop making new content. I don't think it's likely though. And no I don't call myself a Star Wars fan. I love the original trilogy, the prequels were OK, made much better by the clone wars cartoon and that's where I stop. If you think that's bad once upon a time I would have called myself a star trek fan but to be honest I hate that series now other than the original and some of the S9
@Finfection4 жыл бұрын
I think SW fans got too used to feeling like they are right about everything. 1990s: The Special Editions ruined Star Wars!! 2000s: The prequels ruined Star Wars!! 2010s: The Sequels ruined Star Wars!! By SW fan logic everything ruins Star Wars unless it's an idea of their own. The fandom acts so toxic yet when they get called out for being toxic they act like they are being attacked. It makes it so difficult to enjoy anything SW related these days. Even the Luke Skywalker scene in The Mandalorian has been decisive and polarizing. The most funny thing to me about SW fans these days are the rose colored glasses people wear for the prequels. And I will never not be amused at how fans only Give Kathleen Kennedy credit for things they don't like. They don't like it? Screw Kathleen!! They love it? She must have had nothing to do with it despite being the executive producer just like on every other SW series/movies!!

Not mock and ridicule them. They should be greatfull people are willing to spend their hard-earned money on them and provide them with such a career. Hey man, Happy new year from Canada eh!. I'm watching this video on my PS4 and posting a comment on my cell. I'd like to take a crack answering your question about what happened to Star Wars fans...being a lifelong fan myself and in an effort to share Positive communication and information as a new habit and to encourage other fans to do the same. Star wars came out in 1977, I was 4 at the time. Too young to see A New Hope in theaters I would have to wait until I was 7 to see it with my grandmother in a double bill followed by Empire Strikes Back opening day, downtown Toronto. I'd been the barely knew much of anything 4 year old but I knew about it and after that opening day I was hooked. It wasn't all encompassing as the family was kind of poor and as a kid theres more than one thing that draws and keeps our attentions at those ages. I grew up with a lot of good positive Rolemodels from the various fandoms early on as I'd get to stay up a little later and watch some of the best films and shows there were to see. Dr Who, Star Trek, Marvel and DC comics, Battle of the Planets, Force Five, Robotech, Thundercats, Transformers and Gijoe, Masters of the Universe...even She Ra..these all contained Positibe although a mix of live action and animated ADULT Rolemodels that taught life lessons and Good advice for kids. They Encouraged our better Angel's, to be empathetic, charitable and selfless instead of selfish. One glimpse of a character and you Knew Who they were and what they represented. Among all of them including Star Wars there was a common denominator to they're success and places in our hearts where we still hold them dearly today. That common denominator is HOPE. George Lucas himself said in the end it all has to be about Hope. Kids Need Hope. Episode 4: A New Hope. After the 80's ended amd the 90's began the age of the dark and gritty Antihero took center stage and every other hero type took a go at emulating that to one extent or another. The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Millar set of the trend. Saved Batman comics from cancellation and then catapulted the character from there. So much so that 1989 brought Tim Burton's Batman. Which would also be the first and last movie I would see together with my father and sister before he would leave and commit suicide a year later. That movie and character, that experience became precious to me. That character, the Batman was added to my list of imaginary guardians that would help me through that and other more traumatic times I had gone through before and even after then. But the gritty while telling many a dramatic story, as years passed across most offerings put our by all media, comics, books, games, tv shows and films..the trendiness of dark and gritty kinda overran everything. Hell even a Star wars comic that focused on a Descendant of Luke Skywalker's by the name of Cade Skywalker, was a dark gritty star wars goth blond version of his namesake. It's a story I missed but I know is out there. I know it was dark and gritty. But like its contemporaries...it was all very short on the core of what made all of these fandoms popular in the first place Beyond their base perceived entertainment value. Each and every one gave Hope. Hope for the Future. Hope to overcome great personal, or even National hurdles to get to a better place. Hope was a big part of the 80's but not so much afterwards. Reaganomics had been well adopted and while many aspects of society grew and developed quickly, so did the encouragement of selfishness over selflessness. The spending power of middle class families had been eroding since the 60's, forcing more and more families from lower income brackets and upwards well into the middle class to a degree where Single person income households were could no longer keep up with the costs of living as wages slowly stagnated. From a time where a single income family could own a house, buy a car and grow and maintain , clothe feed and educate 2 or more children for the hours wages of one And have vacation time...to today where even two working full time adults can Barely maintain and operate a household, Bill's and everything that goes with it to even Not being guaranteed to support oneself on the 'competitive' wages available in places where the cost of living rises far faster than wages are. The optimism and Hope of the 80's has been whittled down amd neglected in favor of more impulsive habits and addictions toward instant self gratification. Much doubt, fear and confusion has settled in on it's own as we were all encouraged to leave the things of our childhoods behind as if they no longer held any value or meaning for adults. As if graduating to adulthood Meant abandoning Hope for the Bleak Realities of Life as if it were some virtuous step to take. What would the world be like if the automatic love and acceptance that young Children have for each other, regadess of Race or Sex where they want to meet and be friends with everyone. What if we encouraged that from a young age instead of encouraging Abandoning that for Bleakness. How many more problems could we solve as a society, as a species if we Nutured Caring for each other as opposed to trying to out do each other and Beat each other, or Dominate each other. Can the world change overnight? No. Of course it can't. But change is bigger with the more people on board with it. We can't stop the storm...but maybe together we can Buffet it off course enough to Save ourselves as a species and not just nations trying to destroy each other for personal gain. There has to be Hope. Star Trek is currently failing because it no longer speaks to the Hope for Humanity amd a Better and Broghter Future. Dr Who no longer speaks about Using your Brains to find Solutions over resorting to Violence..that all life is equal in value, that there are no Superior or Inferior People..there's Just People. Thundercats taught us the value of Family, Honor , Truth and EARNED Loyalty. G.I.Joe, He-Man and She-Ra taught us how to deal with our feelings, encouraged us to be wary of dangers we weren't familiar with and to treat others with dignity and respect and to be helpful and kind. The Muppets reminded us to Laugh and Dream and be Silly and have Fun and told us it was Ok to be Sad. Transformers taught us that Freedom was the Right of All sentient beings and that to fight True Evil...you Have to Stand United behind Competent, Brave and Kind leadership in the face of Losing Everything and having to Start over somewhere else unfamiliar and frightening. And Luke Skywalker, Obi Wan, Princess Leia and the rest..they taught us that even Huge seemingly insurmountable odds can be overcome...with Help from our Family, Friends and Allies. All of that...is Hope. Disney Star Wars, the Sequels mainly, were utterly devoid of Hope. They Ended the Skywalker Saga with The RISE of Skywalker...the RISE. Yet by the end all the Skywalker's are DEAD along with Han and a bunch of the classic supporting characters like Admiral Ackbar. The Last person standing...a Palpatine who takes the name amd place of Skywalker. The Bad Guy WON in the end...the Skywalker Saga became the Palpatine Saga...and that ISN'T Hope or Hopeful at all. You know the arguments that followed those films so I need not repeat them here save for the common denominator at the root of all of them. The Absence Of HOPE. Ego and Selfishness and Greed drove a wedge through the fan base because there was No Plan, there was no hope for a plan so the Start, the Foundation was unstable and not built for the weight of Ego and Professional Reputations and Addiction to the potential Profits the Golden goose from a Galaxy far far away represented...paid no need to Story, or stewardship of the Core of the brand. Instead it was flogged like a dead Tauntaun by a bunch of slobbering Hutt's like it was a game of Hungry Hungry Hippos. And they nearly drove it into the ground. Then Mandalorian shows up and Favreau and Filoni's world had gone a long wat to Bring Back HOPE to Gnerations of Fans who have Been Without it for Decades and to Provide it for New fans who've maybe never had it themselves. Anyways...these are just my observations bub, my perspective and my opinion alone. I've done my best and sometimes failed at living up to the lessons all of my childhood heroes, my Rolemodels taught me. In Geek Culture these are some of the most important things that get forgotten. The lure of Wealyh to Strongfor the Addicted, the promise of Glamour and Adulation to intoxicating for others and the WORK Needed to Earn those things honestly is for most of those who have vandalized what came before, to big a pill to swallow. To steep a hill to walk, a street to windy, a thing too long to read to understand fully. Not when shortcuts and big visual spectacles can shorten the distance between the Addicts and the Profits droolingly anticipated above any other concern. Fans are uniting now, in defense of each other versus a seemingly inhuman and uncaring and hopelessly corrupted corporate titan of an entity and in Defense of Star wars and pop Culture at large. What's happened to Star wars fans? A lot. Now theres More than Just a glimmer of Hope. I can hope you see it too.

Also you make videos about bizarre Star Wars shit nobody knows about like how some guy put hidden messages in the sticker sheet of one of the toys. Also I laugh how often Junkman fucks up and doesn't edit it out, just leaves it in. Lmao. Also when he goes off on random topics or starts talking about his creepy uncle. lol! Keep it up Junkman. Social media in general manifests two kinds of people. Those that want to do entertainment regardless of monetization/views/niche/hobby loves, and those that want the attention, pure and simple. By the nature of social media, views and replays/shares/reposts mean "popularity" or even notoriety amongst the people that help keep the creator of the videos feeling validated. Your channel is one of a few that I genuinely enjoy because you don't put out anything but an honest appreciation and fun videos. Across the board, those are the channels that I can appreciate and binge watch. I know everyone has opinions to share, and viewpoints on all aspects of fandom, and the people involved in any fandom can be immensely invested and passionate. From Nascar to Star Wars, to Civil War reenactment to LARPing, you will find this sort of hobby dissonance. Magazines a few years ago were more niche, they were well written, and man, Starlog and so many others were all I loved to read, and they infused my appreciation of the behind the scenes. These days, to keep interest up, most media channels, print and online, need to fire up the people they are aiming for with clickbait stuff. It's the hype and public persona that some people are desperate to stand by, as opposed to just shrugging off the drama and focusing on what makes us happy.

Retro stuff rocks. Mandalorean is excellent. The sequels were a train wreck but oh well. You make a lot of great points. The new fans are like that with the TMZ stuff. I love the originals myself. The Mandalorean is great but really one thing to consider people hate the new Hollywood. I can’t blame them because the movies in the 80’s were made for the Western World. Now it’s the politics of today that come into it as well. It’s a huge turn off and the people making these films in all genres are just out of touch with the actual fan base. Problem is so many actual fans can write better scripts and dialogue than what was produced. Oh well I guess. Either way you got me back into collecting. I started buying all the 40th anniversary figures and ordered a Slave 1. I actually like the new figures with old card backs. The figures of today are far better than the old ones. The new movies and characters are largely a failure. Bad writing and dialogue and extremely cheesy feel to the films. I could critique them from start to finish but at the end of the day it ain’t my job. Vote with your dollars. Happy New Year 🎊🎆🎈 Junkman

You’re dead right sir. I think ,like me, you remember growing up with Star Wars in the 70’s and 80’s when everyone collectively simply loved Star Wars. People didn’t look too deeply into it, we just enjoyed it and embraced it. The best thing for me as a kid back then was the figures and vehicles, nothing but fun. I think that some of the prominent you tubers these days are too young and weren’t alive during the release of the originals. They don’t remember how it was, or how it should be, hence the use of negativity to drive clicks for their channel. They don’t remember the love which was just part of those times. The biggest reason that we, and specifically you since you asked us to explain why you should care, is because at the core of what is going on in all different kinds of fandoms although I will keep it about Star Wars in this comment, is that it is a moral issue. What the new Star Wars is being made to do is not tell a good story subjectively or objectively, they are being made to tear down what came before in a mean spirited way, all across the different Media that Star Wars stories is put out is made to make the stories and characters that Gearge ether created or gave his blessing to look utterly incompetent or down right irrelevant in order to prop up characters and stories that promote a message that is fundamentally impractical and immoral. When Kathleen Kannedy was given the rains of Lucas Film, she on camera for the world to see promised Gearge Lucas that she would honor all the characters and stories that she has been given, and the first thing that the fans saw her do was decannonized most of the continuity, we were willing to give here the benefit of the doubt with that decision because George gave here the rains, even after The Force Awakens and Rogue One came out most of the fans were still willing to trust that they had a plan for the stories they were telling, even when The Last Jedi came out most of us were not mad, just disappointed, we were being respectful to the people creating Disney Star Wars stories, and still most of us were willing to take the insults and bullying the people at Lucas Film threw our way. Then we say that they were doing it to other people then ourselves, and if our fandoms have taught us anything, specifically Star Wars in this case, is that we must stand up to bullies. Then as time went on we realized why the people making the stuff that we love are bullying the fans, the very people that buy there products, is because they have always hated them and the ideals that Star Wars under George Lucas had instilled into them, and that fact truly became clear when we found out that the sequal trilogy that we got was not being made using the story treatments that George provided but instead decided to make the trilogy based on ideologies that were completely antithetical to what George Lucas was showing during his time in charge. We have grown up on stories that show us that by living a life of higher morals and ideals and working hard for our dreams, we can become people who can move mountains, but newer story telling try to tell us that only certain kinds of people should be allowed to have anything and that all those kinds of people are entitled to whatever they want and if no one is willing to just give them anything they feel entitled to then they should take it from them by force of arm of fear of threat. We grew up being taught that we are not entitled to anything, but rather we have to earn the things we want in life, and we also grew up being taught that taking what we want from others through fear or force is wrong, and Star Wars under George Lucas was one our greatest teachers of these ideals that produce people of true valor. That is why I believe you should care about all the drama and whether someone we don't even know is being bullied by people that we placed our trust in, because they not only betrayed our trust, but are choosing to defend there stance with bullying and fear, something the heroes that George Lucas put to film made abundantly clear we should not only not ignore, but actively fight against, to quote a line from my favorite movie of 2019 "I do not stand by in the presence of evil", bullying fans and scarying them into staying quiet is just that, evil, and I know a good person will never truly be able to sleep at night if they stand by and allow others to be treated so.

Several months late, but this has nothing to do with generations. Putting yourself in a group incites an us vs them mentality that’ll result in more conflict. Not picking any fights here, but a lot of SW fans are arrogant, snobbish, or spoiled especially with the new Bad Batch episode that released (Episode 13 for those who want context). Over time I grew genuinely disgusted with a good chunk of the community from drama behind the scenes, to arguments over shows and movies, to canon vs legends, to wookieepedia which is a whole ‘nother can of worms I don’t want to get into. No singular age group is immune to that zealotry, as I’m sure you can find lots of examples of people who get into drama regardless of the age range, so instead I’d advise to weed out the hostility and appreciate that Star Wars exists in the first place.

Your “retro” action figure comment inspired a video idea. I learned that there were some terrible people at Lucasfilm (mainly Kennedy) that caused it. Like you, I wish they would get rid of her. Same with the others at Lucasfilm that support her and were ruining Star Wars. I think the fans that are upset are having an impact. I'm not seeing the Rian Johnson trilogy. Wow, I honestly can not say that I have encountered toxic Star Wars fans until Lucasfilm was taken over by Kathelene Kennedy and those she's employed since. There were always people that did not like Star Wars... Rian Johnson remembers hating Empire for example. However, ever since 1977 when I first saw The Star Wars movie, I have only encountered great loyal fans. So who (and where) were those toxic fans you speak of? Where they really fans or just trolls? However, though I was 16yrs old (back in 1977) I first found myself attached online in my mid 50's by many who as soon I mentioned that I did not like The Force Awakens and that I hated The trashed Jedi then proceeded to treat me like dirt! Never have I encountered such toxic group before... I was not criticizing them but these people really hated and bullied me online (I was happy that I was old enough to be able to take it and not fall back) but had I been a young fan it would have been very painful. So no, from where I stand having enjoyed the first six movies and many other related stuff... The toxic has always come from those who never really liked Star Wars! They were there in the 70's, 80's and 90's but they were never part of the community! I'm sorry your experience has been different!

@@colorin81colorado idk where you've been but for decades the Star Wars fanbase has always infamously been one of the most difficult fanbases to reside in. It's like how the fanbase currently wears rose colored glasses about about how things were before Disney owned the franchise. A lot of the toxic attitude from fans existed long before Disney came into the picture. For years you couldn't even mention anything you happened to like a like about the prequels or the special editions without getting verbally attacked or being called not a real star wars fan. It's the same these days when it comes to most things released under Disney. If you enjoyed TLJ (Yes a lot of people do!) It's near impossible to post online that you do since everyone else will come out of the woodwork just to insult you over it, thus preventing any meaningful conversation between people who want to express their enjoyment of the film. The rise of social media has most definitely made issues like this more common and noticeable. But these things always happened. I think it's a little silly to blame solely Disney for how bad the fandom is right now.

You've summed up how I feel about the state of fandom right now. It's supposed to be fun right? Maybe with everyone more isolated than ever we're all going a bit stir crazy but these social media, youtuber and repro wars have to stop. Star Wars is that big a universe that there is something for everyone to enjoy which means, guess what, not everyone is going to like everything, but seeing every thread get hijacked by someone who needs to shoot a movie or character down is just so tiresome. This are some really good points here. The weird fiction written about the internal corprate machinery of Lucas film is a cancer on the fandom. Pablo Hidalgo is one of 20 people in the story group. Hes not even the head. Literally the only reason people know who he is, is because he did little interviews about lore for Rebels Recon. So people "know" him and invent insane fiction about him. He has had SO MUCH weird shit aimed at him for YEARS because he answered some questions for a video for starwars.com The more we can push back on the BS being made up by people who want to sell us shirts about the things we are supposed to hate, then the better we will be.
