I was one of those kids who had the original Kenner toy figure sets that you had to mail in for. I remember it so well, I was sick with a cold or flu, and it came in the mail while feeling bad! What a treat for that to arrive. Sadly, I dont have any of them anymore!

Hey Dan You really nailed it. Star Wars was always an escape, a guilty pleasure I could just sit down and enjoy. Disney has turned it into a chore. You MUST watch all the shows, read all the novels, play all the games or you'll miss some important "character building" fact about some obscure person that might be important down the track. I've been a fan since 77 myself, was Director of the Star Wars fan club in Australia for 13 years AND I've appeared as Vader in TV commercials, TV shows and on the X-Wing tour around Oz and I find it SO HARD to get excited about Star Wars these days. Disney have just tucked the love out of it for me. I still have my collection and all my SW friends, but just can't find the love for Disney's versions. I would have been happier if they had just used the volumes of stories that had already been written rather than just exciling them to "legends" and then picking the eyes out of them. ANYWAY. Great job...love the channel.

Sounds about right, I was twelve in 1977 and saw the original at the cinema, I'll never forget the sight of that Star Destroyer coming over the top of the screen at the start. The originals were good and fun, the prequels were a logical extension that suffered from average acting and the Disney movies were where I gave up on it. All they seemed to want to do was tear down our childhood heroes so you could consume their new improved super sanitized ones.

As a musician you might appreciate this: The first movie had one of the best scores Ever. John Williams at his high point. The musical score is almost a character in the movie itself. It heightens the drama and helps you look inside the characters. Feel their emotions as much as the actors on screen put into them. The dogfights. chase scenes, and battles are tremendous! And even the emotional stuff at the death of Ben and Luke's Aunt & Uncle. Luke's scene looking into the sunset. The score gave those emotional power. The second movie had a lot of repeated stuff, but had some new stuff as well. The walker attack, the Imperial March. The third movie was just repeated themes from the first two movies. No new themes. The rest have had pretty much forgettable scores.

@timfankell4242 5 ай бұрын
Actually, the score for RETURN OF THE JEDI was mostly all newly composed music, including new themes for Jabba the Hutt, the Emperor, the Ewoks, and Luke and Leia. Aside from the Main Title, the only thing familiar was the "TIE Fighter Attack" music from SW, elements of which were used during the battle at the Sarlaac and the chase thru the tunnels within the Death Star.

As with the Indiana Jones films, I'm old enough to have seen each of the Star Wars films on their debut theatrical runs as an adult. It's impossible for younger people to feel the impact the first film had in 1977. For one thing when people saw films then they went into the theatre having no idea what to expect. I think I had seen ONE television advert, which showed the main characters standing on a stage wearing Olympic medals and receiving applause. There was a big dog-thing and a guy in shiny armour, or something. So in the theatre when that spaceship flies over your head everyone was stunned and instantly onboard for the ride. They threw you right into the middle- we had no idea what was happening- soldiers waiting, a hole blows in the wall and white robots come in shooting, then a black-clad asthmatic robot or knight or something comes in. It was pure movie magic from start to finish. No-one had ever seen anything like it. Alec Guinness' performance was the spiritual heart of the film, a heart everything that came after lacked. I did enjoy ESB and ROTJ, except for the childish corny cheesy Ewok parts. The films which have come after haven't interested me much.

100% agreed. If you would have told me 20 years ago that I'd not even bother to watch something Star Wars related I'd have told you that you were crazy. While quantity may have a quality all its own, that does not translate into something worth watching. When the originals came out there were all sorts of back stories and histories that were alluded to such as clone wars, and old republics, sith, and mandalorians that we got to imagine our own versions of before they took absolutely all the romance out of by detailing the universe with the terribly new bland canon. They took away what made it fun.

May 25th, 1977. I was 13. We lined up for three hours at the Fairview Theatre. My Dad was pissed! But wow! Words can’t describe! Then we waited three years; read every Starlog; collector books. The Empire Strikes Back comes out. Rinse and repeat. George Lucas had a story to tell and he did. I like your essay on this as I agree with you - Star Wars, from Lucas’ point-of-view - was not about the money, it was about the story - the characters - the situation. Combining mythological and thematic elements into a fun story arc. But you are right, for Disney it’s about money. It’s a thing to get money. I do disagree on one thing that Rogue One is very good. Mostly cause its got good characters and a good story and shows that you can succeed and still everyone dies. There are a number of conical and continuity errors at the end, but, otherwise. As I write this I’m not sure if you have see Andor, but don’t bother - it’s like watching paint dry. And I just finished the Acolyte, again, don’t bother. Oh and for the record, the phrase should be “Han only shot”. Greedo never fired.

Mate, this is an amazing channel, so glad I found you. I'm a child of the 50's (56) and grew up with all this stuff, Saturday afternoon space movies were my favourite, main one being Forbidden Planet, born the same year as me funny enough, and still looks as good to me today as it did back then. I 100 percent agree with all you say when you compare modern to old, although computer effects look great, I feel they are over done because they can, the classics just look more authentic. I work in a theme park, years a go I was an animatronic specialist looking after about 140 Gremlins and and Looney tune characters. This involved sculpting, making fibreglass moulds, working with, conethane at the time, a 5 part mix to make skins, pneumatics and armatures, so I'm definitely looking forward to the monster part of the channel. These days many of our themed rides are using projected movies rather than animatronics, they are loosing the real feel they used to have as you go through the ride, imagine Thunderbirds done with CGI rather than stop motion, it just wouldn't work, but the modern generation don't really get it. Loved Mars Attacks, old school still works. Absolutely agree with what you said about the Mandalorian, it lost me the same place it lost you. Something I'm noticing these days too, when I was 13 or so, I saved like hell to but my first 45 single record, 50 cents, the carpenters I think, got on a train and travelled 2 stations to buy it, played it over and over, same through the years with my records and cd's, movies had to be good then or they wouldn't sell, your comments about Disney absolutely reflect this generation that knows nothing other than binge watching and streaming anything in front of em, no effort involved. It was exciting watching the Munsters or Lost in space one show a day after school, this kept the excitement, special days. The music Dan is sensational, you and Debbie are amazing, and the editing to make the clip just blows me away, well done. My favourite robot, Robbie of course, thanks for all you have done to showcase him, you can't see my favourite monster, the one from Forbidden Planet, like Alfred Hitchcock does, he puts the suspense in the mind of the viewer, don't always have to show it, that's what this monster did to me, I found it terrifying, especially mated to the music that came with it, and I grew up watching Frankenstein, Dracula etc, Franky is right up there too, again the modern ones lost the plot again. Love your work mate. Ken. Australia

The reason why Ripley and Sarah Connor were such successful characters is because the writers focused on making a strong character FIRST, before they considered the gender. Ripley was originally supposed to be a man, but then they screen tested Sigourney Weaver and they went with it. The character was already written, they just changed some terminology and names. Princess Leia was a great collaboration between Lucas, the writers, and Carrie Fisher to focus on making her a cool character, not a cool female character. Hollywood today focus too much on making a female character cool, rather than making a cool character that happens to be female.

Dan, I could not agree with you more. I did enjoy Andor although it is actually more of a Star Wars version of life in Nazi occupied France with Cassian Andor being an outsider from the resistance who gets pulled in. It's a great story arc and much more intense on a personal level than most Star Wars. I'm not used to having that much agency in Star Wars character development. The villains are smart and have character and the so-called heroes or perhaps anti-heroes are also very interesting and complex; far more so than in most Star Wars films. I think you will enjoy it

I love the original trilogy, I really like the prequels. It bugged me that The Force Awakens went out of its way to ignore the prequels, which was a mistake Disney realized very fast and corrected the issue. But that was also JJ, who then basically went full prequel with Palpatine's return. Your views with Disney Star Wars is about the same as mine. Force Awakens a good start. I enjoyed The Las Jedi more than most. However, over time that movie shows its weakness. And Rise of Skywalker makes no sense. What you said about the Disney shows is exactly the same even to the point where I did not watch Andor yet myself.

I can tell you exactly what happened to Star Wars corporate insanity. The days of George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney the magic guy because there’s a man at the head of Disney he believes in Wolk identity politics ESG and DEI and he let someone run Lucasfilm into the ground without thinking about it and putting feminist ideology before actual storytelling and only that the neutering of all the men killing off of all the legacy characters and pissing off real Star Wars fans to the point where they don’t shell out money to cater to groups that are small and put things in the movies that no one wants and put in the characters that make absolutely no sense. They killed Star Wars by running real fans off and not listening to the fans

When George Lucas was a kid, he day-dreamed about being Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. He brought those dreams to Star Wars. When J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson were kids, they day-dreamed about being George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. They didn't inhabit the fantasy worlds they wanted to make movies about. So, when they made their movies, the content of those movies were secondary to their dreams of being famous movie makers. When I was a kid I inhabited those worlds and they had a certain reality and they had to make sense. That is not the case for Abrams and Johnson. That, I think, is part of what happened to Star Wars.

I think what it all comes down to is this.... When George Lucas first set out to make Star Wars, he was doing it because he genuinely wanted to see the final film, and wanted to share with young people the idea of a new fairy tale in their modern era. And yes, as the sequels began, the motivation slightly changed, as the films became the means to finance the Ranch. But still, even then, he was concerned with the fairy tale. When Disney purchased Star Wars, that's exactly what they did: they Purchased It. To them, it was not a means to give audiences (or even the new creators themselves) further new myths to thrill them and open their minds to what was going on around them in life. It was an Investment. Though George's first film has almost been with us for 50 years, Disney seems to be focusing on an age group that came along well after even The Phantom Menace's release. Success, behind closed doors, is not the further expansion of a wonderful galaxy that George and his gang created; it's determined by financial gain. So, thus you have focus groups, demographics, buttons to push in society, etc, all coming BEFORE the story. So, the story has no choice in that circumstance but to become like liquid, forming into whatever container they need for it to fit into. Thus, it no longer is Star Wars in and of itself, but it has become a slew of speakers who have found a means to say what they feel is important about their world, while wearing a Star Wars t-shirt. At the heart, it is no longer Star Wars. I am a forever Star Wars fan. I was 5 when Star Wars arrived. But I have come to the point where I have my old merch, I have Harmy's editions (and now the 4k's), the music, and the memories-- and I have decided that THIS is MY Star Wars, and have learned to be content with it.

Dan - I was 15 in 1977 when Star Wars came out, seeing it about 2-3 weeks before I turned 16. For me, it’s been all about the music and the novelizations. I immediately read the first Star Wars novel (which actually came out first in 1976!!!). I did read the prequel novels and am now slowly going through the Disney trilogy novels - these novels give background, character insights, thought processes, and expand the movies. Sometimes, the novels are better than the original movie, in many ways. I am not familiar with Mandalorian or other Disney+ products, as I don’t (and won’t) subscribe. RE: the Disney trilogy which came out with actually TWO years between films (not three) - 2015, 2017 and 2019 - there were two very cathartic moments for me especially in “Rise of Skywalker.” One was when our great Princess Leia became one with the Force - I was in the audience weeping, shoulder-shaking sobbing our dear great Princess and also for the great Carrie Fisher. (I did my best not to make too much noise, as it was a fairly crowded theater.) The second time I cried was just a little bit later - when Chewbacca finally got his medal for helping to defeat the Death Star in the 1977 movie Battle of Yavin, which Chewbacca should have rightfully gotten in the Throne Room scene in the 1977 film. And the third most moving moment, to me, was at the end when Rey was looking out over the sands of Tatooine at the two setting suns and had a vision of Luke and Leia as Force ghosts. To me, this meant that the Force went beyond, far beyond, your blood relatives. That Rey, despite technically being Palpatine’s granddaughter, was now going to be a Skywalker, not related by blood but by her destiny! Great moment! Yes, I had my own issues with the Disney trilogy, and “Last Jedi” was indeed an overblown mess, but these great moments of catharsis and hope actually made the trilogy worthwhile for me. Do I like it? Do I love it? No, but those cathartic moments were and are very important to me! I also read more about Rey’s parents and their backstory in “Shadow of the Sith.” I’ve never cared much about action figures, but give me the Star Wars books, and I am a happy camper. Also, the best re-telling of the 1977 movie is the Young Adult novel, “The Princess, The Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy” - all with parts of the story told from Leia’s, Han’s, and then Luke’s POV! A very great book! Sorry to go on and on here, Dan! I wish you all the best and every success with your channel!

There's another character in the original three films, a very quiet character, that was slowly pushed aside as newer productions came out: the viewer's imagination. That's why kids of the 70s and 80s consumed all the product they could get their hands on. They were in the story. There's still story, but the viewers now can only watch from the edge of the sandbox. They're really not welcome to play along. Disney will likely continue to suck the equity out of the IP, like a second generation landlord, but Star Wars won't die. It's very much alive in the fan productions on this and simular platforms. In the future, I hope these talented creators are promoted.

Subbed just from this video. I agree with you. We are around the same age. Star Wars has morphed into that ex girlfriend we used to but just don't really care about anymore. It will never change now unless Disney is gutted from within, and they are insistent on triple downing on their "message" , at the expense of good character development.

The problem is Kathleen Kennedy doesn't understand Star Wars and doesn't understand the audience for Star Wars. JJ Abrams doesn't understand Star Wars either. The rise of Skywalker was a fumbled response to the last Jedi painting the plot into a corner and Abrams and Kennedy not knowing how to dig themselves out. So they did the easiest thing and suddenly emperor Palpatine was back. The laziest plot ever.

TBH, I have only watched the first Star Wars movie when it came out in the theaters. My older brother by 11 years and I were both sci-fi fans. He was the one who turned me on to classics like The Thing From Another World, The Day The Earth Stood Still and The Time Machine, all the originals. Well, we saw in Star Wars was some great video effects and lost of crazy starship battles. It just didn't give us that sci-fi feel. As you said, it was made more for kids. I have been thinking recently about watching some of the sequels. After I recently watched a Disney Resorts TV live-stream video, I was blown away by the Star Wars Attraction, as I was virtually on the ride. As far as watching Disney Plus? Well, the only time I ever ordered it was for The Beatles Abbey Road Sessions.

In 1977, I saw Star Wars for the first time right before it blew up and the lines became blocks long. I was obsessed. Every cent I could beg, borrow, earn or steal went to Star Wars. Managed to see it 33 times that summer and I even snuck in my Fisher Price tape recorder so I could listen to it. My mother made a Han Solo costume for Halloween, and my dad made me a wooden blaster. Like you, I was one of those kids that got the empty box with the certificate for Christmas and was ecstatic to have it. I was equally blown away by Empire, although I was rocked to my core by the ending. And Jedi was just plain awesome. As to the prequels, I liked them. The weren't as good, but how could they be? But to see Euan McGregor channel the spirit of Sir Alec Guinness? To see Yoda Finally kick ass? I can't be there only one who had a squealing fanboy moment when his lightsaber went spinning into his hand and he jumped into the fight. And to top it all off the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the creation of Darth Vader? Genuinely chilling. However, I was so deeply disappointed by the Force Awakens, I didn't see the sequels. I still haven't, and I probably never will. I did love the animated Clone Wars, but that's it. I have seen clips of the Mandalorian on KZbin and it looks amazing, but I'll be damned if I give Disney a dime for it.

I'm a massive *Star Wars* fan and im glad like EVERYONE is talking about the current state of STAR WARS right now under Disney. Their handling of this beloved IP has been pathetic, i am not a fan of the Sequel Trilogy i'm not even gonna get into the obvious reasons why but i have not forgotten the massive backlash of 2018 after "The Last Jedi", specifically just how ignorant Kathy Kennedy, Rian Johnson and Disney were to those of us fans who has valid criticisms of it. Back then Disney seemed to be riding high off of all this metoo movement, and GIRL POWER! Kennedy's "The Force Is Female" agenda. So if you did not like TLJ you were a sexist, misogynist bigot. All of the mainstream access media, Hollywood trades were attacking us fans calling us a "Toxic Fandom", well now the tables have indeed turned, the whole thing of metoo and "Female Empowerment" has gone off the rails, it's become a tiresome, stupid trope in Hollywood movies now, the - *Strong Female* who is perfect at everything, tries to act all tough and masculine, while coming off a completely vacuous and obnoxious. Audiences are now tired of it, and even the trades are all turning against Disney and calling them out, that they've taken it too far and its not creating interesting, compelling Female characters. After the way inwhich Kennedy and Disney interfered with Jon Favreau's ideas and direction he wanted to go in his Mandoverse, since how BOBF and Season 3 of "The Mandalorian" got ruined and Disney lost all that Good Will from the end of Mando Season 2, i have grown very apathetic toward "Disney Star Wars" now. I love George Lucas Star Wars, his storytelling sensibilities, and i think we can only ever get back to that when Kathleen Kennedy LEAVES Lucasfilm and there can be complete houseclean of Lucasfilm. It really needs a regime change like what happened with WB, when Anne Sarnoff and Walter Hamada left. That's what we need now for the Starwars franchise, for Kennedy to just step down or something, and her "Lucasfilm Story Group" to just get booted along with her.

I was ten back in the summer of 1977 and was fortunate enough to see it in 70mm in a huge theater. We had to drive 120 miles round-trip, but it was definitely worth it. I was a sci-fi fan, like my dad, but my mother was the one, after the lights came back on, to suggest we stay and see it again. We saw it about 30 times in the thirteen months it played at that theater. I feel exactly the same about the original three films. Star Wars is still my favorite movie to this day. I believe that most people who think that Empire is the best film, probably never saw Star Wars in first release. For whatever reason, I had all the models but never any of the toys. The magic was not quite the same with the prequel trilogy, although I did enjoy them. I saw TFA and thought it was garbage. I saw "Rogue One" and enjoyed it, although it's still not genuine Star Wars. I have seen any of the other Disney abominations, as I don't intend to allow talentless hacks, most of whom were not even born when SW first came out, to continue to crap all over my memories.

I was about 20 when A New Hope came out in 1977, and it just blew me away, along with everybody else in the theater. There was actually applause when it was over. Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi were also really good. The sequels didn't quite have the energy of the originals, but at least the stories took you to new exciting places and expanded the Star Wars Universe. The Sequels didn't take you anywhere new. Disney dialed the story back to Empire, rebels, X-Wing fighters, TIE fighters, and ANOTHER Death Star. Luke Skywalker was transformed from a promising Jedi to a depressed curmudgeon drinking blue milk. Han Solo was transformed from a respected swashbuckling leader into a broke smuggler and absent parent. After seeing The Last Jedi, I stopped watching Star Wars. Rogue One was good, because it was a fresh story, and it at least paid respect to the original trilogy. That's the problem right there. Disney made their Sequels, but they paid NO respect to what had gone before. Jar Jar Abrams simply copied old ideas, doubled the size of fleets, and doubled the size and killing power of the Death Star, like having MORE of something will somehow make it better. Ruin Johnson simply burned EVERYTHING to the ground. Presiding over all this was Kathleen Kennedy, who was so obsessed with 'strong females' and wokeness, that she never bothered to oversee creation of a good story. You would think that Kennedy hanging around with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg would have had some of their creativity rub off on her, but apparently not.

The sequel movies had one big issue, which J.J. Abrams admitted in interview: J.J. Abrams did NOT fully plot out the sequel movies. J.J. Abrams admiited that he had no freakin' clue what to do after The Force Awakens. Without having the sequel trilogy fully plotted out gave Kathleen Kennedy the room to completely f**k it up. In regards to Kathleen Kennedy, she really, really, really hates Luke Skywalker.

I was 6, maybe 7 by then, when SW 1st came out. I saw it at my local movie theater that had been around for nearly 100 years, fisrt built as a Vaudville theater stage, it still has it's orchestra pit down front to this day. I still remember the moment after the scroll went past and the audience gasping when the ship came down from the top of the screen.

Lost me at Jar Jar Binks. I’ve watched many happy childhood memories tossed in the dumpster for many of the reasons you cited, and a couple more. These days, i try to keep the fond memories alive by avoiding their attempts to remake it. I actually get excited on the rare occasions that i see someone come up with what appears to be an original idea. The last remake i saw that actually thrilled me was the 70’s remake of King Kong. I was a kid brought up on the 30’s version and it brought something new to the table.

Spot on, you and I are from the same era. You fell a sleep where I begged my parents to see it, after all it was a PG movie and I was 6. I did finally get my chance and it just made me go WOW, I grew up watching reruns of Star Trek with my brother but Star Wars was an all new level of excitement. Disney took that excitement of fast exciting new ships and robots and characters that were "almost" heroes and they almost recreated it. A good example the excitement I got when I saw the Millennium Falcon take off for the first time in years. That character was BACK and I was excited, I may have even let out a little cheer. However the rest of sequels I just found myself saying "What have you done?" I tried to like them but just could not.

Unfortunately, it wasn't just Star Wars that suffered at the hands of Disney. All "new" productions were failures. Partly due to lazy scripts, partly special defects, partly directors who don't direct, partly the issue of vomiting these questions of political ideologies onto the audience. This is because they are not interested in making money from their fans, but rather shoving rotten ideologies down their throats. I'm "fed up" with Disney. Cheers.
