The fact that a lot of people now days tend to reduce Iman to just being Bowie’s wife is so sad. Like she had a whole successful career (still does) before she was married

I was shocked to hear that some young people only know Elizabeth Taylor as “that lady who had a perfume.” We must face the fact people have no rememberance or appreciation of cultural history. If it’s not on Facebook or Instagram, it might as well not exist.

I remember Iman being launched in the 1970s. As a nomad, herdswoman, discovered by this famous photographer Peter Beard, to create an image of an exotic, naieve, non-westernized African woman. As a teenage girl, I had never seen such a beautiful model. I cut her pictures, and glued them in my schoolbooks. Peter Beard went `back to Africa` with Iman for a shoot for Playboy, years later. As a woman, I even bought this edition of Playboy, because of Iman. Actually Iman emerged long before the so called supermodels.

Most of the walk today was inspired from her sultry and feminine walk, when she was walking she had the poise, the posture, the attitude when walking, as if it was the first time the media had the chance to grab their eyes upon. It just wasn't about how she appeared, it was how she influenced from bland walks, to dramatic and with artistic expression that aligned from designers back then and the reason she was so cherished both with words as her presence by the media.

I met Anna Bayle in the late 90's where I worked. I was the only person who recognized her. I had collected a lot of couture pictures from the 80's. Some were Christian Lacroix. Anna was in a couple of them. So naturally, I knew it was her. I wished I bought those pictures to her and asked for an autograph. She was really down to earth when I asked if she was the couture model on CNN and other fashion networks. I did not know her name at the time. I made a joke about how she mocked a reporter because he was making fun of her outfit while she was getting ready for an Emanuelle Ungaro show. It was a relief she remembered that incident. She was really beautiful and sincere.

I think that in the fashion world, especially runway and editorial, Asian features are sought after, rather than that kpop look or the western look (for models if colour). Take for example, Liu Wen, Tao Okamoto, Xiao Wen Ju, Park Soo Joo. There’s more, but those girls came to mind. They have very Asian features which are so beautiful and refreshing in a sea of people who look similar. I think in fashion, exotic and otherworldly features are sought after. But yes, I agree that in most places in Asia and the West, Asians prefer a more “white” look, which is unfortunate.

Sadly Anna Bayle isn't as widely known here in the Philippines as Naomi or Tyra are. Plus, her beauty wouldn't be appreciated here as her features lean towards a native Filipino and not a typical European (which is basically the Philippines' beauty standards; the fair skin, light eyes and hair, pointy nose, etc.) P.S. her last name is pronounced as bye-leh :))

About Anna Bayle: this was not the first Asian Supermodel; in fact, Asian models became quite popular in France for their elegance, one of the Icons is China Machado in early 60's, in 70's, there was Marie Helvin, and in early 80's Tina Chow which Karl Lagerfeld found very inspiring: "She was slimmer than most models and much better."

Real epitome of fashion models. They rose in the 80s and into the early 90s. Then fashion models got taken over by mainstream media influence where fashion pretty much started dying only to be kept afloat by personality fashion models that were popularized by music videos….in came the younger models that were pumped by publicity. IMAN, ANNA, DALMA, INES, PAULINA, ET AL DURING THEIR TIME WERE THE APEX OF MODELS JUST BEFORE FASHION REALLY DECLINED BY THE MID 90s. Pretty much everything started to deteriorate not just in fashion but in music, movies, journalism, etc.

I note 2:12 that none of those covers were for American versions of those magazines. Even with Iman, American fashion magazines were unapologetically racist in not putting black faces on their covers.

P.s. Iman never pretended not to speak English. People around her thought she couldn't understand the language...

A Dalma Callado.
