Mark Nelson, Lead Designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal: *On Sotha Sil being alive (11/10/03)* I feel like I should reply to this thread, as I wrote that part of Tribunal, but I'm not sure where to start. I designed the end scene to promote some discussion, but I didn't expect it to (a) last this long, or (b ) head in such odd directions. There are a few things that are certainly open for interpretation in the Clockwork City. Why is the second Imperfect not active? Why is Sotha Sil rigged into machinery? Why is he missing limbs? What are the Fabricants? This is all intentionally vague. I've not yet read an explanation that has hit on exactly what it is I had in mind. I'm okay with that. Here's what I'll say about Sotha Sil, his life, and his death: 1. Sotha Sil was very aware that the end was coming for the Tribunal. 2. He had a fascination with both machinery and magic. 3. The Fabricants were an early attempt of his at a synthesis between the machine and the organic. Dwemer constructs may have been an inspiration. 4. The Imperfects were an attempt at a different project; it failed. Hence, "Imperfect." 5. Sotha Sil is dead. Almalexia killed him. 6. If I really, really needed to, I could devise a story loophole to bring him back. Such is the way of fantasy worlds. 7. I do not forsee this ever, ever happening, because it is both cheesy and unnecessary. 8. I reserve the right to be cheesy, should it become necessary. wink.gif

The Ending of Legends: Clockwork City is really similar to the one of the Sotha Sil Expanded Mod for Morrowind. Just a different timeline and you don't die for choosing to upload Gestalt. Basically, Gestalt talks to you and lets you choose whether to upload him, saving the city and making him return as Sotha Sil (he's basically Sotha Sil's uploaded conscience as he tells you near that point) or sever his link to the city and letting the city die.

Interesting video 👍. Sotha Sil and the Clockwork city are one of my favourite parts of TES lore. It makes the world feel less like generic fantasy. I really liked it's current situation was explained in TES Legends. Its a pity the game lost its support from Bethesda.

It's unclear whether the Dwemer are alive or not. They may have built a clockwork city of their own. Or teleported into an Oblivion realm.

Steampunk - High Fantasy is often an intriguing and underutilized concept as the combination of magic and early-industrial technologies can lead to a vast combination of possibilities. If the Dwemer still existed in some significant capacity, a large percentage of them would have probably migrated to live in the city.

So the question remains: what was the higher purpose of making Clockwork City in the first place? Seht mentioned something about destroying the daedra. What it has to do with the city?

Why is there no Skyrim mod for this? The clockwork city was one of my favorite places in ESO, I'd love to visit it again in Skyrim.

There's a mod for morrowind called sotha sil expanded, that well... Expands the sotha sil part of the tribunal questline to include a LOT more puzzles and also clockwork city itself. For Skyrim there's wheels of lull that's considered to be a sequel to sotha sil expanded, but not as big and instead of the clockwork city you can only go to an outpost that's much smaller but still has the same aesthetic and everything. Both mods look nothing like clockwork city in ESO, but i REALLY like the absolute chaotic mess that is sotha sil expanded.

The idea that everything is shrunken inside the city is not absolute. In some ways it's implied you only shrink to go through the portal to the realm.

I think an essence of his consciousness does still exist in some way, maybe as a kind of AI within the Clockwork City. I think this is what he would have wanted, anyways. He was never separate from his creation. He never feared or even resented his ultimate fate. Call it convergence, or unity. The amalgamation of separate forces, breaking the barriers between nature and technology, the self and the world. I think this was his final goal for existence, to remake Anu.
