You forgot to mention what the Eight means. GE number identification is the decade the model was created. For example DASH 7 = 1970's, DASH 8 = 1980's, DASH 9 = 1990's and ES = 2000's. Another Forgotten fact is that the DASH 8-40B was the most powerful HP ever built in a 4-axle B-B arrangement. It produced 4,000 hp, which was more than its competitor EMD GP60's. The DASH 8 series was designed for fast priority intermodal freight and passenger trains.

For a freight diesel-electric unit, yes, the B40-8 is the most powerful model. The P42 (Genesis) is one example of a higher horsepower diesel-electric with four axles.

Taken from the BNSF Locomotive Diesel Roster updated October 2022: Ex-ATSF; #555 scrapped; #560-582 returned to lessor; #575 part of dead line fleet; remaining B40-8W's in the 500-559 block are undergoing rebuild and repaint at GE. Looks like some are getting a new lease on life.

To hell with class 1 RR’s. They barely even tried to revive the 8’s. Yet the toaster oven Dash 9’s were rebuilt. I’ve already seen many NS rebuilds burnt to a crisp. NS and CSX rebuild program was just plain pathetic. NS used the oldest car bodies and earliest models for their rebuilding and not the latest wide cabs, ones that was ACTIVELY running on their railroads with slightly newer car bodies and more updated systems. Very similar to the dash 9 car body size. Im not sure why CSX stopped their CM40-8 rebuilds they look and work fine. Cant stand that this is the fate of my favorite locomotive.

While there a handful on shortline railroads, it be nice to see some of the C40-8Ws pulled from storage in Galveston for preservation or sent a shortline(s). Or some bought from CN. I’ve thought of doing a fundraiser or something to in short “hey let’s try to get a dash 8 or two/ATSF dash 9 off of BNSF and donate them (or it) to museum like the IRM or something.” Who knows if someone will do that (which would be cool), we’ll just have to wait and see.

Today, the only 3 class 1s using Dash 8s are Bnsf, CSX and CN. The only Bnsf units left are the B40-8Ws which many have been rebuilt recently. The rest are gone. CSX still has a lot of Dash 8s in service. Some were sold back to GECX and some to Pan Am but then they brought many back due to power shortages. Now, the only ones left on CSX are the wide cab units. And, with CSX buying Pan Am, this means there will be even more Dash 8s soon. CN is the only other railroad, but theirs will not be around much longer. CN has been sending many of their Dash 8s to scrap recently and it seems they don’t have much time left. Nice video

You didn't mention that CN up until very recently had a whole pile of Dash 8s, in 3 different models. The cowl Canadian wide bodied ones, some of which are original to CN and some of which can with BC rail on buying them in 2004. Then the C40-8Ws they bought off of BNSF and some I think came from IC. Then the C40-8 standard cabs they bought from UP in 2010 or thereabouts. However recently they have been getting rid of a whole pile of them.

@@Southern_Plains_Railfan We would have fix problems with the radio and ETD head end device as well as check out locomotive radios and ETD head end devices in units that were going to be used as lead units in out going trains. When I started with AT&SF in April of 1995 they were using a radio package manufactured by Colt Technologies which consisted of a control head unit that was mounted in the control stand and the radio package that was mounted elsewhere in the cab but typically in the nose next to the toilet although if I recall correctly the old GE B23s had the package in the short hood back underneath the stairs which was a pain to get to. The radio package was mounted in AAR standard mounting tray which would also accept a railroad Micor and was connected to the control head via a multi conductor cable which due to vibration in the locomotive was often a source of problems. I never had to change the cable (Thank God!) but the barrier strip terminal screws in the radio package and the compression screws on the control head connectors were constantly coming loose causing the radio to malfunction and one of the first checks we’d do on these units was pop the panel on the back of the control stand and pull the radio out of the mounting tray and make sure all the connections were tight. Colt also integrated the ETD functions into the control head via a separate radio package that they manufactured. The Colt control head had a membrane key pad on the front for entering the operating channel into the radio (you could enter separate transmit and receive channels for yard repeater and PBX operation) which worked rather well as long as it was not abused… But Colt failed to take into account the constant pissed off state that train crews were in at management when they designed these units son besides normal wear and tear the train crews wanting to get back at management for some slight (perceived or real) would take out their picket knives and carve up the keypad membrane in and attempt to stick it to the man when all they were really doing was F’ing us telecom guys over as the cost of replacing the damaged control head and radio handsets came out of our budget (I chewed out a crew in a departing train about this one time when they started complaining to me about how management was being mean to them and I explain in a rather loud voice that the only people they were screwing over was us telecom techs who were busy with many other tasks and had to get pulled away from regular work to take care of babies like them). So those experiences left me with a less than high opinion about the crews, combined with the crews propensity to leave art in permanent marked in the toilet compartment (Including one time were I found a two foot image of a penis ‘Functioning’ drawn in great detail and in permanent marker on the cab of a new SD70). Later on in my career the BNSF switched to Motorola Railroad Spectra radios and the separate Pulse LCU-05 by Wabtec which proved to be less time consuming due to the ability to easily swap out bad units. And when the radio changed to narrow band transmission these units were replaced by JEM and Ritron radios that were capable of narrow band and digital transmission. When the AT&SF 3751 was going to make it’s trip to the Grand Canyon in the early 2000s we had to go to the old Santa Fe round house in LA that is now operated by Amtrak and install a Railroad Spectra radio in the cab for the trip, this also gave me my own personal photo shoot opportunity with the 3751 and I crawled all over it! Years later I had to go back and swap out the Spectra for a JEM radio so they could so they could continue to operate over BNSF tracks and because the Spectra’s were being scraped out I got to keep that radio which I have to this day. During my 26 year career with the railroad I actually bounced back and forth between the AT&SF/BNSF and the UP in LA so I’ve worked in and on just about every Santa Fe, UP and former SP facility in Southern California and got to see a lot of interesting things. With the UP I was headquartered at LATC and had the old Taylor Yard locomotive facility as one of my responsibilities (I found a lot of old cool memorabilia there!). I had several private photo shoots as well as a private photo shoot during the run up to the 2002 Olympics with the UP business train with specially painted units 2001 and 2002 that were hauling the train including the Cauldron Car on the end of the train carrying the Olympic flame to Utah. I got some extremely cool shots of the Olympic flame contrasted with the LA downtown skyline in the back ground… Cool stuff! Also, in between jobs at the BNSF and UP in early 2004 I spent a 3 1/2 month period working for the Rail Communications Division of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority working in communications equipment for both the light rail and subway system. While doing inspections in the subway tunnels I got a lot of great videos of run bys on subway trains doing 70 mph while passing two feet from my camera. The MTA was a rather strange place to work because of the politics involved in the project but I got a lot of great photos and videos as well as working with some great people.

Another place you can go see 1 in action every single day is the Auto-train yard in Sanford FL. Every day one of their 500 series B32-8's break apart P053 or build P052. Periodically one of the Auto-train's 2 dash 8's are sent down to Hialeah yard in Miami for switching duties. The neat thing about this run is that they'll send just a dash 8 with a single AT autorack so that the Dash 8 can run track speed per CSX rules. I have also seen a Dash 8 lead P091 or 97, but this is a very rare occurrence, the crews do not like them for long runs because they say they are uncomfortable.

(Hopefully I'm wrong) However, it would still be a worthwhile trip. Galveston is a busy place in terms of rail traffic. Best of luck!

There's still B40-8Ws hanging around on BNSF, every once in a while, one will show up as substitute power on the locals here on the Thayer Subdivision as well as in Memphis, Tennessee area. Heck, they're even starting to show up on road freight trains again! There's was one as the second unit on an H KCKMEM that was even towing a former Kansas City Southern SD40T-2 too! To bad the 6 axle variant didn't get the same revival on BNSF!

In Minnesota on some of the BNSF lines I have seen BNSF 542 and 558 B40-8W’s paired together on locals lately with both of them still in the Santa Fe paint scheme although BNSF 558 had BNSF swapped out for the Santa Fe writing it’s still in the Santa Fe paint scheme!!! Even the other day the pair led a H train by there selves which was pretty cool for 2022-2023 and also in the deadline at BNSF Northtown yard in the Twin Cities I believe BNSF 563 Dash 8 is in a deadline

Do you still have a lot of SD40-2 in use? I absolutely have to look over at you... Unfortunately, it's so far away and it's not just possible to go on a day trip. In Austria, all older series are being phased out... Also the well-known Alpine vacuum cleaner 1144.

@@Southern_Plains_Railfan Thanks for the information. I really have to fly to the US for a few weeks soon. :-D Your diesel locomotives are awesome, we can pack up in Europe with our weak parts. :-D The Alpine vacuum cleaner is the ÖBB series 1144. We call it that in Austria because it has extremely loud fans. At that time it was the most powerful 4-axle locomotive in the world when it was delivered. I have a few videos on my channel. I still enjoy driving it, even if it's sometimes tiring on the mountain roads because of the noise. :-D kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2OtimumZdxngas

As an older Canadian, I never knew Pan Am operated a small railway. I always remembered them as the best of the best international American airline. Flying on one of their 747-100s between New York and London was always a glamourous experience, unlike today's American or United Airlines. Now if I want to have that Pan Am like flight experience, I have to fly Lufthansa or Royal Singapore Airlines. Pan Am and the era of air travel will always be dear to my heart despite the fact the seats costs were higher for that time. I would love to see an new American all business class/first class flagship airline and it would be rebranded as Pan Am.
