I have a lot of empathy for the Dolan twins. They were so young when they got on the internet and became popular. I feel like they were viewed more as kinda reality stars / eye candy. A lot of fans took the twins attractiveness as an invitation to debase them to objects and invade their privacy, which is even more disturbing in hindsight when you realize how young they are. They came into fame before the internet became more aware of emotions and respecting creators as people. I can see where they would try to meet their fans expectations which only reinforced the fans demands for content that featured what they wanted to see. I personally really liked the series of 'survival' and 'building' style videos they did. I remember when the funeral happened and they were genuinely afraid of upsetting their fans by asking them not to come. There were arguments in the comments from fans claiming to have some kind of emotional connection, therefore making them deserving of coming to the funeral, in the same breath as saying they were going to hit on the brothers. I can see after that having a dislike for your fans or the platform. They talked for years about leaving the platform and I think you can see in their final videos (and as they discussed in the podcast) it was not the content they wanted to create. They started their channel to have fun, share their creativity and try to spread some positivity. I think they realized it was creating more negativity in their life then positivity and I hope now they're focusing on themselves. I dont want to see them back on the internet because I don't think that's where they're happy and I think they need to figure out who they are instead of what their fans want them to be

The only thing Gabbie Hanna ever said that I stand behind is that people tend to stop growing around the time they reach fame. They are getting everything they want so there isn't much incentive to mature as a person, people are watching you for how you are now. There's even the fear that if you do grow viewers won't like you anymore. I'm not a content creator so I don't think I would have realized that perspective on my own. Maybe the Dolan twins wanted to figure out what they wanted without the influence of what their audience wants. The influence goes both ways.
@bethromelus61722 жыл бұрын
I can totally see this. You're expected to perform and social media makes you performs constantly or else you lose engagement and relevancy. There are costs to taking a break to collect yourself. Personally, I've also seen how online fame can cause people to go on a power trip or act in strange ways because they're not humble anymore. They lose touch with reality and they do things that give them a lot of backlash. Things like this is why I don't want to ever become a full-time content creator. You have to show up as the best self for algorithms and engagement. Not really your best self as a person because it's less interesting.

I kinda feel like they couldn’t handle the pressure of having to address controversies that they were involved in whether they looked bad in said situation or not. I think also being basically famous from childhood, it kinda stunted their growth as people just a little bit- like with child actors. I just don’t think they were mentally equipped to deal with controversy or drama. the passing of their father, someone I imagine they both looked up to and probably talked to for advice, I think that also affected their passion for filming and creating content. I feel like they were trying to fill the whole that that their dad left with other things instead of actually trying to deal with their grief. I think the break that they were taking is good for them bc they need the time fo reflect, live with their grief and be with their family without the pressure of being famous (bc fans showing up at your dads funeral is something no one would want if the setting was organised to be intimate) But that’s just my opinion from what I’ve seen. I was a fan of them and I watched them a lot as a child. I think maybe one day, once they’re sure of themselves and who they are, they’ll come back onto socials, I just think they won’t be the same.

I think if everyone went into KZbin understanding that these people don’t know us and we really don’t know them…we could be a lot happier. We can admire them and they can be grateful for us. But they don’t owe us anything. We don’t notify them about every move we make and they don’t need to do that either. I loved the Dolan Twins they were funny, random and spontaneous but I think alot of their fans could see when things started to change their hearts just weren't into it. They went from funny skits or random Q & A's etc but I think right around the time their dad got really sick and subsequently died things really took a turn for them. Especially when they suddenly teamed up with Emma and James you could just tell that they were trying to find their niche and that things were more scripted than natural which is what at least I fell in love with. It happens man I'm sure they got older and started to look and their content and think about what they wanted for their futures. Grayson just seemed happier at home with their mom out of LA while Ethan stayed in LA with his gf. Then they said they were leaving and I wasn't that surprised I'm actually glad they took off and decided to try new things maybe it's for the best. Also we could kinda tell that James was making Grayson hella uncomfortable by flirting with him constantly when it was obvious that Grayson wasn't interested. Anyway I'm happy if they're happy and would genuinely go back to watching them if they returned but if not there's tons they can do in the future. At least for Grayson I know he loves making things and always seemed happy doing that. I feel like they just didn't or don't know what's next and the pressure wasn't helping.

I miss them so much... I grew up with them and they made me so happy... I remember looking forward to every Tuesday. But I feel as the time went by they fell into a whole bunch of dramas and they weren't passionate about what they were doing anyomre so they felt guilty about it and just wanted views so they could make the feeling go away.

Same here...I remember being so happy to see their new video and that was like the highlight of my day I swear. But I'm happy for them honestly, they've made their way out of the toxic environment on time.

I feel like them leaving KZbin was expected. When they posted that documentary and had that break I immediately knew their era was ending. Then Ethan got a girlfriend and their fans became quite toxic- and KZbin altogether. I’m glad they are able to rest after so many years of making people laugh.

I truly believe that they couldn’t keep up with the how YT was changing since they started around a different time than their influencer friends. With that, I’m sure they were trying to find out who they are as individuals instead of twins. Plus family changes, transitioning into different types of videos/podcasts, trying to be something they clearly aren’t by befriending ppl who are/were popular at the time, privacy being breached, burnout, etc. it all fell short & kept happening back to back without a real plan. I don’t think anyone around them had enough sense to mentor these guys with pure intent. I used to be a huge fan & I hope that they’re doing what feels right to them as well healing as much as they can behind the scenes. It took me a long time to get to a place & see them as ppl separate from what they do. They’re just like anyone else navigating through life, but they have more eyes on them. Yea, they aren’t the best ppl due to how they’ve treated others & their actions, but hurt ppl hurt ppl. Of course, I’m not justifying anything, but ppl make choices through life with what they’re dealt with at that time. I truly wish them the best.

I wished some influencers like Gabbie, Tana, Trisha, James would go away instead of being messy/problematic but being an influencer is the only thing they know. Good for the Dolan twins for prioritising their mental health and having the strength to do it.

Honestly, I'm happy for them. I only watched about the last year of their time on youtube but man, you could tell that they were only having fun every once in a while with it. As long as their healthy, working on something that brings them joy and are still as tight with each other as they used to be - as a fan, I'm good.

the dolans we so young when they got famous, definitely got taken advantage of, then went through some pretty heavy real life shit, and people just wanted to still invade their privacy. they literally couldn’t even attend their dads funeral without fan showing up. they tried many times to say they wanted to do more behind the scenes with directing and production, and people were just ruthless on them.

The longer time goes on without the Dolan Twins posting, the more clear it becomes how they should be in a documentary about internet fame and culture. They were literal kids rising to huge success without getting derailed by drugs or money in LA. speaking up about struggles with anxiety, OCD, and eating disorders is really amazing considering their age. All we can wish is for their happiness and opportunity to explore themselves out of public view. They are treasures.

It must be tough in a way when your career is fully dependent on being able to get attention and be liked for your personality. Eventually people are gonna stop caring and move onto someone else. I’ve been following some creators for over a decade and nobody stays at the top forever. Having to constantly portray yourself in a certain way to cater to fans must be exhausting after awhile. The passing of their dad and their fans not respecting their grieving period was definitely the last straw for them.

I don’t think they owe us an explanation. I feel bad that they were so unhappy on social media for so long. I hope they’re doing well now. Regardless if they come back or not I’ll always appreciate the impact they had on my early teens

What a privilege to say you’re burnt out and are going to take a break. Great for them! But I think what they are feeling is common for everyone. My career is something I love. It’s my dream job, but it’s very stressful and overwhelming. I am 100000% burned out, but I financially can’t just take a break to refresh. I guess this just goes to show that we’re all dealing with similar things. But sadly most of us won’t get that break to really deal with our own mental health.. we just push through somehow

That's fucked up man, people out there really said ,"I'm gonna show up at your dads funeral", like its not the time for a damn meet and greet. The people who said that wouldn't like it if one of their parents passed and someone pops up out of the blue saying " CAN I GET A PICTURE WITH YOU" while your mourning and sobbing your eyes out. I just wanted to say that because that's really messed up. Some people don't know that they have their own lives too...

As a former Dolan twins fan like a lot of these people I’m going to have to agree with the majority of the comments they don’t know us anything they don’t always owe an explanation for everything and quite frankly half of the stuff is none of our damn business. We’re in a day in age where we’re letting problematic people get away with things and people are worried about this. They shouldn’t have to make a social media post to keep people away from a funeral, And if they want to keep why they broke up the sister squad a secret that’s their business not ours whether anybody likes it or not. And if you get offended by what I said maybe try growing up.

I've loved the twins since I was pretty Young and I've always respected them. When I saw that people were trying to break into their house or go to their father's funeral, it not only saddened me, but also made me scared for their safety. They've Always been so kind, funny, and genuine people....they don't deserve people trying to ruin things for them. Though I'm Pretty bummed about them not posting, I'm just glad that they're living THEIR lives the way THEY want! They deserve so much in this life💕

i had been a fan of them since 2016. they were my world honestly (i was actually born exactly one day before them) so i literally felt like i grew up with them. with the mental health problems ive gone through being just an ordinary young adult in america, i can’t even imagine what all the mustve been going through personally throughout the years, especially at our age, and seriously especially after losing a parent. i can’t even fathom. there are a lot of times where i do want them to just give us a sign cuz i was so invested for years, i literally felt like i knew them. but i know they are probably happier and i hope they get to live the lives that they want to live because thats really all that matters

This is not out of hate or anger towards the twins, but I don't appreciate how they handled the issues that they should truly hold accountability for (an example is what happened between them and Ryan Karoly). As for them grieving over the loss of their father,Sean Dolan,I truly understand why they needed to quit/get off from KZbin. It's really not that easy to bare the loss of a loved one, most especially if they were involved in a huge part of your life, I've been there too.💜 I have more things to say about the Dolan twins, but maybe I'll save that for another time. Hopefully they'll be able to continue to take the time that they needed in order to heal and get their lives back on track. It's not certain, but I wish that when they are ready, they'll make a comeback, even if it's just a one time thing. (Edit:I totally forgot about the part where,it was mentioned that the twins went to Jeanette McCurdy's podcast, I'm so sorry, I'm not that fully updated on the twins)

Good for them, their fans should understand if they’re going quietly that’s what they want. They owe nothing to anybody, let them move on the way they want to. The standards are set so high and I have more respect for people who don’t want to give into that standard.

If you had a close family member passed away, you know that you will grieve for a long time. They weren’t able to grieve the way they should’ve. I don’t mind that they leave, as long as they focus on themselves. Fans should understand that the Dolan twins are just young people, who lost their dad due to an illness. I believe they had done much stuff to deal with before the dad’s passing, so even afterwards is just too much.
