Today we look at just what the race of the Dwarves were doing both during the War of the Ring and then after the events of The Lord of the Rings as well! We cover all of the seven houses of the Dwarves as well as having a look at Gimli of The Fellowship of the Ring in a little more detail as well!

I never thought I’d prefer a line from the movies more but “value a home” hits harder because it captured the Dwarven quest for a home; and the Hobbit’s simple, small, and good living holding back the darkness. They ultimately are getting at the same message but the use of home really just makes it more poetic.

And my axe! My favorite dwarf-related moment is Gimli's request for a single strand of Galadriel's hair. Several ancient elvish heroes had asked multiple times for that very thing and every time Galadriel refused them. She gave Gimli three.

The fact that this is coming from a person who just found out that so many of his kin were slaughtered and now he has the chance to avenge them gives me chills. My favorite dwarf moment is Thrain sitting for seven days without sleeping, eating, or saying a single word after hearing of his father's death at the hands of Azog, before standing and simply saying "this cannot be borne" which then led to the war of the dwarves and orcs.

And my axe! and about the question, I think Dale Ironfoot standing to protect King Brand's body is quite a meaningful moment that shows dwarfs not only think about themselves and their riches.

My favorite dwarf moment is summed up in this one sentence from tFotR: And [Gimli], hearing the names given in his own ancient tongue, looked up and met [Galadriel's] eyes; and it seemed to him that he looked suddenly into the heart of an enemy and saw there only love and understanding. Reading this always brings tears to my eyes. Gimli was transformed by this encounter. His close friendship with Legolas never would have happened, otherwise.

My favorite moment is when Gimli is battling the cave troll in Balin's tomb he finds durin's axe. Don't remember if the book gave much attention to that part, the movie is very subtle though and pays almost no attention to the discovery of durins axe. When Gimli jumps off Balin's tomb to dodge the troll's club he lands right next to durin's axe. If you pause at the right moment you can see it. Gimli proceeds to use it to kill off the remaining moria orcs when trying to dodge the cave troll's strikes and take it to the battle of Helms Deep, Siege of Minas Tirith, and the battle at the black gates.

My favorite moment has to be the "competition" between Legolas and Gimli over the most kills. I think in the books it's only mentioned it Helms Deep. But "That only counts as one" might be the best moment from the movies.

I had loved the dwarves since my highschool days and I love how you share my enthusiasm about the dwarves, and the sadness mixed with the fact that so little was written about them by Tolkien. This makes for future eager writers to write anything about the fate of those unheard of Dwarves and their houses and the feats they have accomplished. Many mysteries and stories in middle earth, but the dwarves scant history is one of my favorites.

Well glad I discovered this channel, for one. For two, my favorite moment with a dwarf had to be the moment Aulë was about the strike down his creations, when Illúvatar stopped his hand, and breathed life into the dwarves, animating them and giving them purpose.

I just wanted to point a couple things out in case you make an updated video in a few years. First We do know that following the destruction of Beleriand many Dwarves of Nogrod and Belegost went to Khazad Dum (look to the beginnning of Appendix A). So it is possible that many Firebirds and Broadbeams took part in the battle of Dale and the Siege of Erebor, another thing to point out is that Bifur Bofur and Bombur were not of Durin's line but did come from Moria (look at the bottom of the family tree of Durin's line in Appendix A) so quite possibly they were Broadbeams or Firebeards so just a couple things here and there. Also "You have my Axe" ;)

@@jonystyles9473 no one actually counted, only that they sent "great forces" and that of the entire army only 1/3rd survived at the end. As Durin was the eldest Father it can be presumed all seven houses took part. Tolkien groaned at having to give numbers at all, since the message was that numbers don't matter.

I always find amazing how Galadriel herself gave 3 golden hairs to Gimli. She even denied that request to Feanor himself, which was inspired by Galadriel's hair to create the silmarils. As much as the Hobbits teach men about strength, compassion and humility, I think that the dwarves can teach so much as well. I mean, king Dain Ironfoot defending his human friend's body to his death, Gimli befriending Legolas and the even traveling to Valinor shows that there is so much more about the dwarves than just mining for riches and not caring about the outside world.

Dwarrows' surly defiance when outnumbered is shocking and almost comical, yet admirable. Gimli's retort to Eomer when he, Legolas and Aragon are surrounded by Rohirrim is my second favorite: "Give me your name horsemaster, and I'll give you mine." (Dwarves have a way of sandwiching a good insult in between threats.) But Balin's outburst takes the cake when he and his friends were captured and being interrogated in the Elvenking's Cave Fortress: "What have we done, oh king? Is it a crime to be lost in the forest? To be hungry and thirsty, and trapped by spiders? Are the spiders your tame beasts or your pets if killing them makes you angry?" Whew, yeah Balin! heh heh, not the most tactful of questions to ease the old Elf-Dwarf feuds, eh?

Dwarves are awesome. I wish we learnt more about their alliance to humans in Erebor/Dale and elsewhere in the main story. As is, it seems to mostly be supplemental materials and stuff of questionable canonicity (like LotR games). I did really love Battle for Middle-earth 2, though.

I love every moment of the Dwarves...Elves, Hobbits, and other magical creatures. I feel like it would be very lonely for the Human to live alone as the master of middle earth. If I was the King of Men like Elessar, I would do in my utter most strength to safeguard all races of Middle Earth so that they won't extinct. Middle Earth is too big of a world for Men to live alone, and I'd hate that if that's going to happen.

Bro, I love your videos but you totally missed Azaghal. One of the most badass examples we get of Dwarfhood. His story is even relatively fleshed out for a Dwarf. A lord of Belegost, he made an alliance with Maedros the Noldor prince after the latter saved his party on the Dwarf-Road after an orc assault. For this Maedros was given a helm made by Teacher (not a small prize) and the support of a full army of Dwarven warriors from Belegost during the Nirnaeth Arnoeadiad. In this battle Azaghal and his forces covered the Noldor retreat after Glaurung and the dragons were unleashed from Angband, fighting a young Glaurung and wounding him while dying in the process. The Dwarves then lifted his body and left the battle, refusing to take anymore part and carrying their lord home as if it were a funeral dirge. If anything this gives us a little look at the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains and their relationship to the Noldor.
