@@rickybobby6760 I don't think you could say Burton has a powerful voice anymore. Age has taken its toll on his once-MIGHTY pipes. Jukebox he sounded decent - and he sounded excellent when he appeared at the Olympics in Vancouver in 2010. But since then, let's face it .. the pipes have been getting thinner and thinner. To say "Still does" - that's simply not correct. No one's voice is great forever. Listen to Macca - vocally he's pretty much finished now. I wouldn't have said that until his Egypt Station album. For me, the "last stand" for Burton's voice on an album was his "Above the Ground" album in 2008. He was 61 then. He's now 75 and, let's face it, he SOUNDS 75. Let's get real.
@rickybobby67602 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanlegthigh8264 I saw him live in 1987, and I saw him live 4 months ago with Bachman. He is not the singer he was when he was 25 no, but he still is a great singer, absolutely.
@jonathanlegthigh82642 жыл бұрын
@@rickybobby6760 That's largely due to the fact that Burton has always been a MASTER vocalist - his technique is top-notch - he knows all the tricks, when to push, when to pull back a bit, &cetera - So even though he's lost A LOT of voice, he still has a "toolbox" if you will, which he employs to pull him through each show......a lesser vocalist would have had to give up the ghost years ago.....The main problem with Burton, which has been for some time, is that he's NASALLY - "shrill" is the word - I suppose you could say this is due to the fact of his having lost so much of his lower end (soundwise) through the years - take away that lower end and that higher end dominates = SHRILL ........ this wasn't an issue when he was in his prime because he had his lower end .... so to listen to Burton in his prime (1970-1980) it was a thing of beauty.....he had the voice of a GOD.....he still sounded great in the 80s, though by Plus Signs there was a change to the sound......not drastic but definitely noticeable................he kept this "slightly different sound" for a good long time....to the mid 2000s.....by 2010/11, though, came the beginning of what has been a sad but inevitable decline.....today, he's an old pro....crafty.....a real survivor.....but his vocals are beaten up.....like with Macca, there's a distinct creak/croak to the vocals.....the power is long gone, and the precision....well....it's not up to scratch.....Should Burton retire? I don't think he could. This is a man who loves the spotlight. But as with every great warrior, there comes a time when certain home truths must be absorbed. We all get old. It happens to the best of them. Including the immortal Burton Lorne Cummings. The man will be closing in on 80 in a few years. He'll have lived MULTIPLE lifetimes in that span of time......the fact that his vocals are pretty much kaput should come as no surprise given that Burton was not a man to shy away from "partying" when he was young and brash.........thankfully (as he's always quick to say), we always have the records as "frozen points in time"....

Thanks for this video. The Guess Who had a good string of hits with "These Eyes" and "Share The Land" in the 70s And Burton Cummings had one of the most distinctive voices in Rock, nobody sounded like that guy. The first time I heard " Dancin' Fool " on the radio back in ' 74 what a change in music style for the group . It was Cummings voice on lead vocal but the writing was in a new direction . The Cummings - Winter partnership was over . For what would become the bands last two (LP's) Flavors and Power In The Music , all the writing was done by Cummings - Troiano . Dancin' Fool peaked at # 28 on Billboard . Burton does not hold fond memories of this last line up . To this day he will not preform songs from his writing association with Domenic Troiano .

Love what you've done here. There's a lot of research, and it's organized well. I listen to a lot of audiobooks so my ear is tuned to voice. My suggestion is that you slow down just a bit, and read through the script a couple of times to remove the occasional stumble over a word. One example is at about 2:55, where "charted" sounds like "charred". Doesn't really change what you're doing, but slowing down just a bit will make it flow better. Again; love what you've done. Cummings disillusionment theme " Ballad Of The Last Five Years " from the groups 12th ( LP ) Road Food , pretty much sums it all up . With the highs and lows of the recording business along with the bands personnel changes he somewhat vented with that cut . Taking his own advise Burton parted ways in September of 1975 , ending a bitter - sweet 14 album recording association all with producer Jack Richardson and RCA records .

You know what's weird? We've all read how Cummings was unhappy with all the personnel changes. Well, what's the common factor? Cummings has bragged in interviews that he basically chased Chad Allen out of the band. Bachman left (fired? quit?) because he and Cummings could not get along. It was Cummings who hired Winter and Leskiw. Then a couple years later Leskiw quit after an argument with Cummings, the story goes and Cummings hired Don McDougall. Then he fired Kale and hired Wallace. Then he fired Winter & McDougall and hired Troiano. Then he became unhappy with Troiano's jazz influence and quit the band. Seriously, who was the one who could not play well with others?

Bachman didn’t leave because of a dispute with Cummings about or because of becoming a “Mormon”. Bachman suffered a bleeding ulcer that hospitalized him for a time and took over a year to fully recover from. During that time the band kept touring and Bachman didn’t return but eventually started BTO. You really should dig deeper and check several sources before spreading crap that’s not accurate, or misleading.

This happens quite often when there is an audience that enjoys music but has no clue about the musicians performing. Yet, hardly anyone knew the only classic member left was the drummer; most had passed away. But, you know what? Burton Cummings was doing his very best electric Perry Como, while Randy Bachmann tried to out-Mars Bonfire Norman Greenbaum. GW did a couple lackluster LPs after American Woman, and faded into the Canadian sunset. Cummings went on to challenge Leo Sayer as a Pop Artist, but Randy Let It Ride successfully with BTO, until that, too quickly became another formula, albeit one influencing countless (supply the adjective of your choice)-metal bands. Creativity is a challenging skill to acquire any comfort at the best of times. Maybe we have to suffer to sing the blues, in truth. Living on the road takes it out of you fast, little grievances quickly become stumbling blocks. Look at Glenn Frey's treatment of Don Felder, a decade later, when touring was jet-fueled and cocaine-enhanced, nothing like the Ryder Truck days of the late '60s and early '70s Bob Seger sang of in Turn the Page. Competition got tougher, with Floyd's Dark Side and the Eagles shooting to the top of the heap. Guess Who was caught in a time trap, still a '60s band, in a the streamlined, tangerine-flake nitro-boosted 1970s. BTO did some truly classic tunes, but Burton's work never rose to the level of his previous contributions to GW, in my record-buying judgement (I was a partner in a record store in a major market, in the '70s). Guess Who were like the Canadian Kinks, capable of full-on rock 'n' roll, but better at blending folk influences with pop sensibilities, in Top 40 Rock, to create songs that resonated with the record-burying public. They deserve a place in the RnRHoF, just for American Woman. I can name a half-dozen BTO songs, without batting an eye, but I can only name one of Burton's solo efforts. That isn't a criticism of Cummings' approach to songwriting, so much as of AOR radio stations that didn't play him. They didn't play Tom Cochrane that much, either.

If I recall, the Guess Who was never inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. It has always been my contention that the reason was because of the song American Woman. While it was a popular song on both sides of the border, it seems the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame had stricter criteria on who they allowed in.

@@markchristman1076 Not that it matters much anymore, seeing that the RNRHOF is a total joke now, they aren't in because of Politics. Look no further than the former Founder and Editor of Rolling Stone Magazine.

When Randy Bachman left the Guess Who, he joined up with Chad Allen, his former Guess Who band mate, & Randy's brother Robbie to form Brave Belt. They recorded their first album with Randy on guitar & bass. Charles Frederick Turner was brought in to play bass on the live shows to support the album. The first Bachman-Turner Overdrive album was supposed to be called Brave Belt III according to Randy.

As someone who grew up through that time old enough from the band's inception to remember them, I think of them as pretty much a one hit wonder outside North America. Although "Shakin' All Over" was a hit, it was covered in my country and many others by so many artists around that time, Chad Allan and the Reflections version was really an obscurity. "American Woman" was the singular hit I remember them for. I bought the 45 vinyl single.

Lol, we should all be so obscure. The Guess Who should be in the RRHOF, my friend!

Randy Bachman was married with children. He wasn’t going to fit in. Rock n’Roll yes. Not so much the drugs and sex.

You could have at least tried to make an effort to get your facts and pronunciation straight. John Chretien was from the Province of Quebec - not Manitoba - and was never the Premier of Manitoba. He was the Prime Minister of Canada!
