In the 1980s scientists discovered a crucial part of the Earth’s atmosphere was extremely thin.
The extreme thinning of the Ozone layer threatened to bring on a global crisis from destroying plants and ecosystems to sky-high skin cancer rates. So, what happened?

Found this on a Body & Hair Care Site: "Modern-day, CFC-free aerosol sprays also emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to ground-level ozone levels, a key component of asthma-inducing smog. The state of California is now regulating consumer products that contain VOCs." by Sarah Moret

It was my Minnesota friends fault that the ozone was thinning. He’d spray hairspray in the air hoping for warmer winters. RIP Mike

Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent that reacts with just about anything. Keeping man-made pollutants out of the stratosphere is good, but Plinian volcanic activity can impact it as well.

The hole in the ozone layer is much older, but scientists lacked measuring devices for detection before satellites were built to measure the ozone concentration.

What happened to the ozone hole? The collapse of the Soviet Union happened. Just like the big CV from 2020 went away as soon as the 2022 invasion in Eastern Europe started. Seems like the world can keep only one big topic going at a time. How else can we explain that the "big news of the day" goes away, as soon as something bigger happens?

No, the hole has been closing due to the reduction of the use of the CFCs that were causing the problem.

In a recent video, Paul Beckwith related that the ozone hole was bigger than ever in 2024 and has been getting larger for three years running. Given the publication time of this video, I thought that this would have been worthy of comment. Mr. Beckwith shows the source of his information and relates the current condition of the ozone hole to extremes of temperature variability due to climate change. Given the lifetime of CFCs in the atmosphere, we are going to see reoccurrence of the hole as long as these temperature extremes are possible. Also, in recent years I have read reports of ‘new’ CFC emissions occurring from somewhere in the world. If even limited emissions occur, could they outpace the rate of breakdown of the existing CFCs in the atmosphere?

I did not realise the southern hole was growing again, so I have just looked at A.M.S., sadly it is. I am not into Chemistry but I understand that the destructive nature of CFC's is that they sett up a Cyclical chain of chemical reactions such that one CFC molecule has a recurrent effect on more than one Ozone molecule.

What countries were in the accord? How much CFC pollution was eliminated? How can we say with certainty that this was not just the earth doing it's own thing? I can't envision countries like China or India making major changes but then maybe they didn't use hairspray, etc. Not enough follow-up has been done to assure the science was right or even meaningful.

So what about all these Consumer and Commercial Ventilation Ozone generators for air and room disinfecting ? The EPA is allowing ? You can rent big portable Ozone generators to mitigate mold and milldue. Ozone generators used in high concentrations for extended periods can and dose corrode and will degrade Metal and Electronics that are exposed. I have done some tests that corroborate this.
