Nothing positive about Lacey Chabert? She was still doing Party of Five when Lost in Space came to theaters. I was only able to locate a “stinky award for her Supporting Actress role” from a now defunct awards ‘company’ that only lasted themselves from 1997-2006 (that in itself deserves a stinky award of their own). I was disappointed she wasn’t given a bigger role in the movie, but then Angela Cartwright didn’t have much of one in the TV series.

Another great breakdown. I, too, felt disappointed when I left the theatre. I didn't know the story behind Bill Mumy, which was a missed opportunity. I could see that reasoning would better be applied to casting Jonathan Harris, because his Smith leaves a long shadow and the classic fans would just want him on screen more than a cameo.

When I saw the film in the theater, they lost all sound for the first five minutes, which made the firefight at the gate into a silent movie. It was interesting, and not half bad that way. Being a fan of the first season of the TV show more than the latter seasons, the spiders were appropriately Jules Verne-esque, and the derelict ship was more than a little reminiscent of "Rendezvous with Rama", but at that point in cinema, tent-pole sci-fi movies had to have a villain who would die dramatically at the end. Spider Smith let them have that, but let them justifiably keep him too, without ending on a foreboding cliffhanger. (The original Dr. Smith as comedic farce rarely appealed to me.) I liked the idea of using the Jupiter One design as an initial launch vehicle, but I wish it had been designed to be reusable rather than just exploding.into orbital debris. And yes, they should definitely have hired Bill Mumy as the elder Will Robinson. I liked the film because the plot felt just a little more like classic Science Fiction adventure than a '90s SciFi shoot-em-up. To be honest, the only thing I really hated was Blarp. But then, I was never fond of the space monkey on the TV show either. My favorite line was "...and the monkey flips the switch..."
@aj.cavanagh7 ай бұрын
It was a tremendous thrill to see this movie attempt to replicate some of the excitement of the original TV series including all of the story-line tributes, original cast cameos and even the music. I liked all of the new cast but I totally agree the spider smith was the 'jump the shark moment' that really let the movie down and probably led to it not doing as well as it should have at the box office. Thankfully, Dan is right (of course) in how it lead to a tremendous resurgence of interest in the original series and we old-school LIS fans got so much out of this as a result.

I remember when the original Lost in Space series premiered, and I was all excited to watch it. I had really gotten into the comic books version of the Space Family Robinson which is what the series was built on. Which was such a cool idea. In the beginning I did enjoy it. Then Along Came Star Trek, and there was no comparison. I still watched the episodes when I could, but they seemed so silly and childish compared to Star Trek. Then in 97 or 98 when the remake came out, I watched the first few episodes but never got into the whole series, short as it was. As far as the Netflix remake, that was excellent. I enjoyed it immensely still rewatch it even now. The fact that I've been alive through all three incarnations of Lost in Space makes me feel incredibly old.

I certainly like the Netflix series better than the 1998 movie - but I also look at the new series as separate from the original series. The movie was entertaining at the time, but it certainly didn't hold up. Jared Harris-who is awesome-as older Will Robinson didn't really add much to the character. Bill Mumy would have been a great cameo for that part. Speaking of Jared Harris in sci fi shows, are you going to do a video on The Expanse? It's one of the few current space operas that really does a great job at story telling, grounded by real physics. I'd love to hear your perspective of it.

Similar sentiments here. Too bad the director was only interested in cameos of the previous actors, Billy Mummy as the older Will Robinson would be perfect. Not really a fan of the 97 film. But looking for positives: Gary Oldman The two robots were pretty cool. I liked that they had two physical incarnations to go with the two different personalities. "Mom's gonna be pissed" was a really funny line. Love or hate the updated Jupiter 2, at least it was big enough to hold all their stuff. And the Jupiter 1 launch vehicle was a nice homage to the 60's TV show. Loved the updated suspended animation pods. Gary Oldman CGI only so-so, but practical model effects were awesome. J2 crash sequence was exciting and spot on. The Walton's bit as they were bedding down on the first night after crashing on the planet was also pretty funny. Did I mention Gary Oldman? On a more personal note, I managed to wrangle an invite to one of the premiere events and the VIP party afterwards. I got to spend about 30 minutes chatting with June Lockhart. Interestingly, we spent very little time talking about LIS. She is very charming, and VERY smart. We spoke about world events, politics and music. Turns out she is a HUGE rock & roll fan. And finally, Gary Oldman.
