The 2012 remake of Maniac deserves more love for its daring narrative choice of adopting a first-person perspective, effectively immersing viewers in the disturbed mind of its protagonist, portrayed by Elijah Wood. This unique approach adds a chilling depth to the film, rarely seen in mainstream horror. With its emphasis on practical effects and psychological horror, Maniac stands out as a refreshingly innovative remake that warrants recognition for its contribution to the genre.

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

This is probably the best remake that has ever been done. Made with such love for the original Lustig film.

What made it scary for me was the thought that Frank could go from 0 to 100 at any setting, any moment, no matter who he was with. When Anna dropped the mannequin hand in his shop, I thought for sure he was gonna lose his mind right then and there. Great movie.

Definitely in the tier of "The remake is better than the original, while also elevating the source."

Nowhere near the caliber of the original but it's decent. Too much CGI blood.

@@seandavis9320 There isn't even that much CGI blood. You could stop talking out of your ass and watch the Blood & Gore BTS video. Also, it is "somewhere near the caliber of the original". You're literally making shit up to try and disparage the remake, so you're just making your mind up purely based off of nostalgia. Your opinion...is meaningless and biased.

Even my ex-girlfriend loved the movie and she's usually not a fan of overly violent movies. She even saw the character of Frank as mostly likeable, she felt sorry for him but she didn't want him to succeed.

I enjoyed the movie, especially the POV shots in some parts of the movie where we are inside the killer's mind. The ending was very sad and heartbreaking.

A few of my personal favorite Elijah Wood movies that you didn't mention are The Faculty, Cooties, and I Don't Want to Live On This Planet Anymore (or something like that, it's on Netflix). I'm so happy Elijah and Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint are still getting steady work. Rupert did have a show I really liked that got cancelled for some reason. I hate that. Oh, and also... DANIEL RADCLIFFE FOR THE NEW WOLVERINE!!! Tell me he wouldnt be perfect, and I'll show you a liar! He's short, he's gotten pretty freaking ripped, and he can pull off those sideburns

The role was originally offered to John C. Reilly which I wish we had gotten. Wood did the best he could but Reilly would have nailed it.

I actually wasn’t fond of this remake by far. I hated the first person pov opposed to the guerrilla style camera work from the original. The gore was decent enough and Elijah Wood’s performance was good but Joe Spinell’s was truly haunting and gave me a true maniac. Plus in the original New York feels very much like a character itself offering the gritty and slum that made the environment almost an accomplice to the murders. Accompanied with the chilling score the original was true art. This movie isn’t bad just when it comes to remakes this one isn’t a favorite and to me is easily forgettable.

Ted Bundy said the experience of killing was like watching yourself in a movie. I really liked when the POV changes when Frank kills the girl in the parking lot, it reminded me of that quote. Overall was a good twist on the slasher genre, but I think they could have done much more with the concept of being inside a killer's mind. I hope to see the original soon. Thanx!!!

I am willing to be completely wrong about this: but, this movie's influence is immensely underappreciated. Its trailer alone started the fog horn craze that gripped film trailers for a decade (Dredd, Christopher Nolan), many of the images the trailer focused on for Evil Dead Rise felt (no pun intended) ripped right from this movie's trailer. without this film, we would not have Hardcore Henry, The David Gordan Greene Halloweens, and Spree.

Maniac for me is the best remake since The Blob and I even prefer it to the original, (of which I'm also a big fan of) and Woods is great in it. It would be in my top five remakes of all time, just a really pleasant surprise for me.

It Sucked. I was actually anxious to see it, because Elijah Wood as a serial killer was intriguing to me. But once I realize it was a remake, and the story fell flat on its ass. I lost interest. Wood's best performance as a serial killer was "Kevin" in "Sin City." Not this hot garbage. And there's clowns on here saying its their favorite horror movie of all time?? They must definitely work for rotten tomatoes. Because they have absolutely no clue WTF they're talking about.
