What Happened To The Old Grounds At Yankee Stadium?

Awesome history lesson! Brought back so many memories. Every Yankee fan remembers like it was yesterday the day they got their first glimpse of that iconic shade of green on the old Yankee Stadium infield grass. It was better than Christmas. Now on its 100th anniversary, the site of all that history is not even an afterthought. Turns out the Yankees actually managed to do something worse than pave paradise and put up a parking lot-they’ve let the grass grow over it. Hope this is the first of much more content!

Thank you so much, Carlos! I feel you 100%. There was no greater feeling of walking through the tunnel, leading to the stands where you saw the outfield grass, the smell of hot dogs in the air, the whole experience of attending a game at Yankee Stadium in person. It was better than Christmas. You're right! It is a shame that it's not even an afterthought. That real estate has so much history. I should've looked this up prior or during the production of this, but do you know that the old Stadium territory isn't even officially a landmark? How is this possible? The Times article below is from 2008, but still. No reference of that area is considered a landmark to this day. That is a complete travesty. I have to thank you. 20 years ago , I visited N.Y. and wanted to go to a Yankee game, I didn't. BUT soon, someday soon I will , but ALSO GO TO THIS HISTORIC PARK , SPOT. THIS IS THE REAL LAND WHERE HISTORY TOOK PLACE. I wish Chicago kept the original facade of Comiskey , that spot , land is history too.

It brought a tear to my eye because I miss NY , the old NY when I was growing up there, I’m a die hard Mets fan as well, but I love baseball and the history of it, and yes a lot of history was played on that field, I can’t believe that was Yankee Stadium at one time, they should have never gotten rid of that stadium very sad, I went to a few Yankee games when I was a kid and yes it was a special place and like you I am a Mets fan until the day the lord calls me home, but the history in that stadium and on that field is amazing. So sad that they are not keeping up with it. I just want to say thank you so much for making this video it was really great watching it, I was born in the Bronx Fordham road back in 74 , had my first birthday there, then mom and dad moved to Queens. You were born in the Bronx, huh? Fordham Rd? I know the area very well. I'm glad that this resonated with you, not just from a baseball/sports perspective, but missing NY on a whole. As for the field/old stadium? I know I could've mentioned a ton more (Reggie's 3HR in GM 6 of '77 World Series. Brawl between Carlton Fisk & Lou Piniella at home plate. Even Cosmos soccer when Pele was on board) It's a shame that the city or even the organization doesn't make this hallowed ground into an outdoor museum of sorts. This was one of the points in making this video. It is sad that nothing is being done about it. And yes, Mets fan til the bitter end, but I had to pay respect and honor all of the legends, icons that graced the field that has become forgotten over time. Many thanks again, brother!

Jay, as a true ⚾️ fan, I wholeheartedly understand your message regarding old Yankee Stadium. I was born in LA and started following the Dodgers in 1966 when I was eight years old. I was shocked when I first heard about the proposed demolition of YS. As an amateur archeologist, I understand about locations and their place in history. The same goes for that hallowed ground your video eloquently pointed out. Why a revolution didn’t occur among Yankee/⚾️ fans, I don’t know. Years ago, my high school was to be demolished in favor an apartment complex. The alumni and students rallied and got the city of Los Ángeles to declare my school of historical significance. Celebrating it’s 100th anniversary this year. Something similar should have been done regarding YS. Was it possible to restore? Or did greed win out? Thank you, keep on doing what you’re doing. Great video. I'm a lifelong Braves fan, and what happened on that field in 1996 marks one of only two times I got physically upset at a sporting event. I haven't been back to NY since the new joint was built. I'm surprised that the city hasn't done more to maintain that site. I'll have to get up there to check out the new stadium soon.

Great video! Still surreal to me that they knocked it down. I can't go to the new stadium without looking over my shoulder at "Heritage Field." To your point, I think Old Yankee Stadium is not just baseball history but US history. The space needs to be properly utilized, and could potentially be a landmark for tourists. When my kids get older I will take them on this same history tour!

I've always felt that Yankee Stadium should have been kept in play, as it truly IS hallowed ground. And I'm a Dodgers fan! Like so many other Angelenos, I hope Dodger Stadium never falls prey to those who think bigger -- and modern! -- is better. I've always felt like the Red Sox did the right thing by sticking with Fenway, ANOTHER great citadel of baseball history. If THEY could do it, why not the Yanks? And why isn't that dreary field a true Yankees Museum, with markers, plaques and even statues of the great players who made the place what it is? Ah well, thanks for the excellent historical trip down memory lane; I really enjoyed it! P.S. -- If the Mets had beaten the Dodgers this last October, I'd have very happily rooted for them in the Series. After all, our Dodgers donated that gorgeous shade of blue they wear on those beautiful Mets uniforms!

@dondavis5633 Yes. 100%. If there was someway that they could've renovated it, despite a two year upgrade back in 1976, they should've done so. Fenway (like you mentioned) and Wrigley seem to be in tact. And I get it that the Mets needed a new building as well. I understand it would've been chaotic to redo the place, but if they could've kept it on that soil, I'm sure they would have. It's puzzling why the organization hasn't done exactly what you said. Whether it'd be an outdoor museum or partial indoor/outdoor. It's a shame. That would be criminal if the Dodgers fell prey and moved to another part of the city, but didn't I hear that they're getting a $150M upgrade themselves? P.S. Ahhh! Is that right? I appreciate that. This guy gets it!!!!! The people that work for the Yankees do not! However, the field was actually lowered by five feet during the 1974-75 renovation. The current home plate and pitching mound are not in the same place as the ones were in the functioning park. Still, it's the same space. The Bronx courthouse beyond the right field fence was part of aura of the real Yankee Stadium. It was visible during Gehrig's 1939 speech, among other things

The Reason why the Giants and Dodgers barely have any sort of plaques commemorating their existence in NY was because of the bad taste they left moving to California granted it wasn’t their fault for moving. It’s a shame that NYC and the Yankees didn’t really due a good job preserving this hollow grounds. The Yankees are SO BIG on tradition yet they tear down the house that Ruth built. Yes the old one was deteriorating but it’s still an icon in America.

@Glitch94 Hey Glitch. Other than a couple of signs near where the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field once stood, you're right, they don't have much as far as where the old stadiums were. It really is a shame. The Shot Heard Round The World is one of the all time great baseball moments. I get it, it was 74 years ago, but still. And yes. I do agree with your Yankee take. I live in Kansas City Mo, I love the Royals, when they tear down the k and build a new stadium someplace I hope they do a better job of keeping that space recognized. Though the chiefs are talking about building over it. I have visited the Kansas city A's Field. It's also a bunch of houses now, but there is a section that tell the history.

I know there’s been talk about moving the Royals/Chiefs to Kansas, although the Royals want to move downtown and the Chiefs will refurbish Arrowhead. Interesting about the area that was the old A’s stadium. Same could be said here in NY for the baseball Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers. They are housing projects, but there is a mention of it. I love old time baseball. I wish I can go back in a time machine to experience it.

@@jayreelz you should do a video on the Kansas city A's, it has unfortunately 😎 a lot of Yankees history, for instance Rodger Maris played with the minor league team kc blues, along with mantle at one point, Jackie Robinson also played there same stadium with the monarchs. The longest NFL game was played there with the chiefs. All at the corner of 22nd and Brooklyn. The royals played their first couple of seasons at that stadium as well. Municipal stadium

This is an amazing video - a lot of history which I find fascinating . I read an article ironically about the old yankee stadium field and it mentioned that the old home plate is roughly where second base is on this field. I guess that maybe the seating was located roughly where the new home plate is. Either way it’s hallowed ground and would love to see it for myself. Great job

They sold off bits and pieces of the old stadium as much as they possibly could. You could purchase a pair of bleacher seats, individual bricks from the wall in monument park, small pieces of the field and other things as well. I think it should have been preserved as a museum given the incredible amount of history that was linked to the stadium.

Hey dude, first of all, great video! I was 9 when the old stadium closed down in 2008 and I only got to visit that stadium 3 or 4 times. The last game I went to was on August 29, 2008 when the Yankees beat the Blue Jays 2-1 in one of Carl Pavano's rare starts no less! Also, I'm sorry to break it to you, but the site of home plate from the old stadium is actually located around where second base is on that diamond you were standing on. I know it's a common misconception that home plate on that diamond is at the same exact spot as it was in the old Yankee Stadium, but just wanted to let you know. Thanks again for this great video!

I only visited that stadium twice in 2006 when my summer camp gave us tickets to games against the Pirates, which sadly I don’t remember that much. Shea Stadium was kind of a dump but it still had so much history that it was sad to see that one go too!

Hey Jay just saw your video at the Old Yankee Stadium grounds. Which is now a public park. I too am a Die-Hard Met fan, but also a baseball fan. And just to be clear I probably know more about the Yanks than most Yankee fans! I have to to keep the Yank fans in check. Haha. But yes that field that was once Yankee Stadium should be pristine & manicured for the public. That way fans like you & me ( I haven’t stepped on that field) can imagine the history behind it. I grew up on 137st & Cypress Ave. We would get the fellas together, walk across the Tribough Bridge to Randall’s Island, to get a field to play baseball all day! That was 50 yrs ago. Most of the fields then were filled with rocks & dirt. Today ,with the help of Mayor Bloomberg & many private schools , Randall’s Island is NOW filled with pristine & manicured fields. Many with sprinkler systems. Well if those fields can be taken care of , where is the NYC Parks Dept at the former Yankee field? Actually the Steinbrenners are always displaying their history, with Championships & Retired numbers. Shouldn’t they participate in the upkeep of their former field? I mean how much would it cost to maintain it. I know the Steinbrenners aren’t hurting for money, I understand they’re printing money at the new Stadium. Isn’t that former field part of their legacy? Actually 26 Championships have been won on the former field. Only 1 at the present Stadium. Hopefully someone in the Yankee front office will realize that the former field is a part of their history. As for me again Die-Hard Met fan ( I’ve died hard Many times!) I can say I’ve been to the Original Yankee Stadium ( Bobby Murcer, Roy White, Gene Michael) the Restored Yankee Stadium ( Reggie Jackson, Willie Randolph, Greg Nettles) & todays version. Well Thank you for that video, & I think come spring time, I’ll get my son ( whose 35 now) tell him to grab his glove so we can have a catch on the field. Yes pristine baseball diamonds are scarce in the Bronx, that field ,that hollowed ground ( as many Yank fans old say) should be maintained & be a proud addition to the Yankee history. One thing I can't understand is how more Yankees fans weren't up in arms when they tore down Yankees stadium. If they tried that shit in Boston or Wrigley the fans would have lost their shit. I am a proud met fan but also have a love for baseball history. Ruth Maris Mantle and others played. 100 plus years. There is more soul in that empty field than that mausoleum that they call Yankee stadium. 😢😢😢

We kinda needed a new stadium after the beam fell on that seat in 1998. They did tests to see if the stadium would be able to handle another renovation. They had plans for another renovation. They couldn’t do it. The stadium wouldn’t be able to handle it.

@@jmpowers83 Absolutely! I remember that back in April of 1998. They moved the game to Shea Stadium. Darryl Strawberry hit a HR vs. the Angels. I remember it well. Make sense that they couldn't do another refurb. It had been standing there for over 70 years. Who knows? In 30, 40 years, they may build a new stadium on the original site. @ I wish they could’ve renovated the stadium. My dad always said they should’ve done it in sections over a number of years, so they wouldn’t have to play anywhere else. It really would’ve been great if I got to bring my niece and nephew, and any kids I may have in the future (I don’t have any kids yet) to the Yankee Stadium I grew up going to. My dad and my uncle were supposed to go to the game the day the beam fell. I don’t think they were supposed to sit there though. That was crazy. It would’ve been really cool if they kept at least a wall or a section of a wall standing. Even like a tiny piece. I would’ve outlined the footprint of the stadium, then outlined the field.

@@jmpowers83 Yes. I wonder why they couldn't do that. Similar to the MSG's makeover in the early 2010's. Maybe it was too much of an undertaking with suites, amenities, dealing with winter weather during construction. That's probably it, if I had to guess. Ahhh! I totally get it (as far as bringing nieces, nephews and future kids to the old Stadium if it was still there) Really? Were they supposed to be there? Wow! That was a midweek game in April, I believe. That incident happened in the afternoon prior to the night game (which could've been a Tuesday night) Thank goodness their seats weren't near where the beam fell. Yes. I agree. That would've been cool if they did that. People like us would recall that in an instant!

Cool video man. Sadly none of the spots you point out are the actual locations of the plate or mound at either very if YS. The approx location of home plate from the renovated stadium is close to 2nd base at that park.

The current field isn’t in the exact spot the field was when the stadium stood. Home Plate was where 2nd base is right now. But still, it’s important to the city, to the country, and to baseball. Also, it’s a public park. No one is stopping people from visiting.

@@jayreelz I currently live in Rockaway Beach. I’ve been here all my life. Even though the beach gets crowded over the summer, and The Ramones wrote a song about the neighborhood, a lot of people from around the 5 boroughs claim they never heard of it. It’s a nice place. The only train out here is the A, but they recently shut service down until May, because there was a lot of damage during Hurricane Sandy, so they have to fix it. They did work since then, but they need to do more permanent fixes, and they have to protect everything in case we get another bad storm. I’ve always lived in an apartment, so I got no damage during the hurricane. I just lost the food in my fridge and freezer.

I completely agree with you. Detroit demolished tiger stadium in the 2000’s . However, a group of volunteers maintained the field for years and eventually investors decided to back the project and Today the corner of Michigan and Trumbell is becoming a big part of the community again! Let’s hope Brooklyn can do the same for the grounds of Yankee Stadium.

Reggie's famous All-Star Game HR in '71. It's sad that they couldn't make these old stadiums into museums of some sort. It's all about money and building over it, instead of preserving the area and the impact that it had. Great to hear they've done that they're doing something to make it part of the community.

In 2012-2013 I got to walk onto the field at the old Tiger Stadium site. Post-demolition (2010) the fence had a gate that was just hanging open. Walking onto the field where Kaline, Ruth, Gehrig, Maris, Trammel, Whitaker and sooo many legends played the game gave me a chill. Went there as a kid a lot for games. Now I work right down the street. The site is pretty nice now with condos around the perimeter and the refurbished ball field used for kid's leagues is a nice touch. Glad I took that stroll before it got all built up.

Clearly, the NYC Dept of Parks & Recreation either don't have the proper funding and/or interest to keep this special public park in good condition. As for the NY Yankees, they certainly cannot cry about budget woes. So, what's their excuse? Could it be that they want all Yankee fans to forget about the original site and focus only on the amusement park that includes a baseball field?

For real regarding the Yankees. You would think it'd be in their best interest to preserve that land, even if they want to make every red cent out there. Or just out of benevolence to give back to the fans who remember all that took place there. And excellent point on putting all of the onus on the new park, forgetting about the old one. u are 100 percent right and respect the fact u are actually met fan saying this ...i hope they do listen to u ...and dont believe for second they dont got the money lol....im big yank fan and been to lot of games and lucky to have actually met lot of great yankees....and i too did go to that field slash park to walk the holy grounds and u actually got goose bumps it was really cool and didnt even cost any extra other then normal parking fees and stuff because saw yankee game after i went .....but yea i honestly dont even know why they took old one down nothing was really wrong with it and why they just didnt rebuild same spot like they did the first time (already got rebuilt) because they had to rebuild it in concrete cause the area was not great ...same with shea i didnt really see anything wrong with shea ok citi is nice too but ...and look at even giants stadium which was nice rebuilt it to met life gotta be ugliest stadium in football now hahahaha ....they better not change madison square garden lol they talking bout that now and that arena is gorgeous inside and out ....later bro ty .....respect

been a fan since 1968. they can put the “Yankee Stadium” sign on the new park and call it “Yankee Stadium” but the fact is Yankee Stadium doesn’t exist anymore. I understand the need for a new building because there wasn’t anything else that could have been done to improve the real Yankee Stadium but the new place is not “Yankee Stadium”. I can never revisit the place that I went to in the sixties. the new place is nice and state of the art but it is not “Yankee Stadium”.

The parks department won't maintain it. Historically speaking, the N.Y.C. parks department only maintains parks in white neighborhoods. I used to live in the South Bronx growing up. I played in a little league of only Puerto Rican boys. The league was started because the established leagues were white and did not want to integrate. In order to have the parks department fix our field in Crotona Park in the Bronx, back in 1968 all of the players in the league with some parents went into the Bronx Borough presidents office and staged a sit in till he came out and spoke to us. Two months later the field was resodded, the fences fixed, the water fountains repaired, the stands rebuilt...you follow my drift? Sooooo what you see in this historic field is only status quo for residents of that neighborhood. Maybe when the area is gentrified the department of parks will fix up and maintain this historic location.

I’m sure the neighborhood has a lot to do with it. As much as the area beneath the South Bronx (Mott Haven) has been slowly making a shift to being gentrified, it’s not there yet. It’s still a shame considering the amount of history that real estate has produced. And it’s RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET, which makes it more infuriating. In this capitalistic climate, you would’ve thought the Yankees would work with the city to construct a museum of sorts.
