Hi, Hungaria (from Slovakia) here. First of all, pretty good summary Hilbert, not many foreign historians research Hungarian history well enough to get the details right. To be honest the use of the Hungarian flag is a bit of a mess. First of all, Hungary uses 23 historical flags on important national events. (Link: hu.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magyar_t%C3%B6rt%C3%A9nelmi_z%C3%A1szl%C3%B3sor) Funny thing is, none of the current 2, the red white and green or the red white and green with the coat of arms is part of the 23 mentioned above. Now it gets complicated: it is true that during the 'rendszerváltás' (literally means 'regime change' but it only refers to the 1989 regime change... Hungary had MANY regime changes in it's 1100 year long history) there was no new law regarding the flag. What did eventually change is the coat of arms ('címer' in Hungarian). So the coat of arms you show in the thumbnail and in the video is the current/valid coat of arms of Hungary. Now here is the part where it gets really complicated/ interesting! The OFFICIAL flag of Hungary is WITHOUT the coat of arms, meaning it's just red white and green... HOWEVER the flag with the coat of arms could be used by individuals and even by state offices and local authorities WITHOUT ANY LEGAL PENALTY. So to sum it all up: red white and green is the official flag, the one with the coat of arms is semi-official. P.s.: Hilbert, a good advice, please don't use the phrase 'rebellion' when talking about the 1848/49 Hungarian revolution especially if Hungarians are around. P.p.s.: Now there are actually banned flags/symbols in Hungary. Hungary is unique in this aspect because it banned both far- right and far- left symbolism. Meaning the communist flag (1948-56) and any related symbolism as well as the arrow- cross (Hungarian nazi) flag and the swastika (German nazi) flag is banned. That's the reason why there's no real Antifa presence (unlike the US or Germany) nor is there a communist party in Hungary. On the other hand the far- right found a loophole in this law, they started to use the Árpád flag (red and white) for some weird reason which is part of the 23 historical flags to avoid being arrested or fined. Fortunately the far-right activity has been on the decline since the 2006 riots which was the peak year of neo- nazi movements.

@@stanleysmith7551 Rendszerváltás means system change. Unlike you or the Romanians we did not have a revolution, we just voted off the commies. And why would calling 1848 a revolution is an issue? Helo! This is the first video I’ve ever seen from you, and you did a really good job. However as a Hungarian historian, I noticed some minor mistakes which are need to be corrected in my opinion. In 1849, the Hungarian Diet dethroned the Habsburg dynasty and the coat of arms changed as well with it. They used the so called “Kossuth címer” (Kossuth coat of arms) which is basically the Hungarian coat of arms but without the crown and the shape of the crest is slightly different as well. However, oficially the Government form was still Monarchy. In 1945-46 the second Hungarian Republic was proclaimed (communists were in minority in the government during that period). The Hungarians were sick of Monarchy as well (even though, between 1920-1944, Hungary was a Monarchy without a monarch) and the people gladly removed the crown from the crest without Soviet pressure. Communists came to power in 1947 after a controversial election. After the revolution of 1956, there was a coat of arms in the officially used flag - as far as I can remember- called the “Kádár címer” (Kádár coat of arms, named after the leader of Hungary between 1956-1989). If you need sources, feel free to contact me. But as I mentioned, you did an absolutely fine job!
@humorpalanta
@humorpalanta 2 жыл бұрын
The "Kádár címer" was an "internal" flag as it was used mostly within the country. Officially the flag was the red-white-green flag. It is very similar to the situation regarding the Hungariyan Constitution. Even though the constitution was a sort of copy of the russian one it actually never stated the state to be a dictatorship. (I know it is complicated but very interesting!) So basically the state was "in constitution" a democracy with a democratic constitution and the socialist government was basically above the law and used decrees/statutes to form "law" and rule the country. This is one of the reasons why we did not have to accept a new constitution after the regime change and we did not have to change the flag. Because according to law they were democratic. Personally as a political scientist I find it both amazing and hilariously funny. Also I would prefer the "Kossuth címer" as an official coat of arms and the slim flag without any addition. Also the name Republic of Hungary.
@csoki1998
@csoki1998 2 жыл бұрын

There was a referendum planned around 1990 about what kind of coat of arms people want, the traditional one, or the stripped Kossuth kind (was supported by post communists and the infamous, ~foreign supported "Free Democrats", who later fallen out from the parliament, who always hated the traditions, called them nationalism, and always wanted to erase the past). People in huge majority supported the traditional one, and there was no question what will be voted, so the parliament finally decided to use the traditional one, and the referendum was cancelled.

Both variants are equally used both by the government, government agencies, local governments and civilians. I've never noticed any pattern or system behind it. It's completely random like whichever version they manage to get their hands on when they need a new flag. I saw a chess tournament not long ago and at these tournaments they place mini flags next to the players and even at the same chess tournament there was no consistency. :D Again, whatever they can find as long as it's a legal variant. There's also a third variant where the coat of arms is smaller and only appears on the white stripe. I think this one is only used by civilians.

@@peterbaan9671 Which guy? Well one part of it is a couple hundred years older than 1000 (Byzantine part) the other parts after the reign of St. Stephen. But I am sure you already know that. Closing and dropping it is pretty much disproved yes, however multiple times for long time it was hidden and dug down (being taking in a box on horse etc could have 'smashed it' perhaps, or by some reason when dug down. Doesn't need much since it is a fragile easily vounerable part. The main mystery is perhaps when it happened, could be during Habsburgs, during revolts or before. However depiction from middle of 1800s show it not crooked, whilst depictions from late 1700s show it crooked. Older depictions show a different form so it could also have undergone changes (which it did on every other part so its logical). It should be looked into more by historians and other academics.
@peterbaan9671
@peterbaan9671 2 жыл бұрын
@@therealignotus7549 It is indeed the "canon" that the crown was made out of two pieces, but one of the goldsmiths who had the opportunity to take a close look at it claimed that the parts doesn't make sense separately. I believe him more than the currently accepted theory, because that one is dumb. Anyway, the box which was housing the crown and the rest of the crown jewels is on display and it's just a reinforced box with no inserts or anything. That's why there is no guy who closed it too fast, the crown was probably damaged and repaired multiple times during the last at least 1000 years. There are multiple depictions, but especially after the Habsburgs took over, virtually nobody saw the crown irl. It was only worn on coronation ceremonies and they were rare. So for one to depict it correctly had to have: - Art talent - Access to the crown for a sufficient amount of time - The urge and permission or commission to depict it Which was very rare and even rarely survived history. Most of what survives today are copies of earlier drawings and texts. Also some of the drawings were created from text and the artist never saw the crown. Yes, the crown had some changes, earlier texts claim the picture on the back was Virgin Mary and not Michael VII Doukas. Also it had 5 pendants originally, now it has 7. Yes, it needs to be researched more and also we need to pay attention more to those who know a thing or two about goldsmithing, because historians were clearly failed us multiple times.

The Hungarian crown that included in the coat of arms actually has a hungarian king ruled after Stephen and byzantine emperor (also ruled after Stephen) on it. In Hungary one of the current version of the crown origin story states it is 2 crowns merged together one is that contains the images I mentioned above (greek crown) and one with unknown origin (latin crown). Also the cross on top is a later addition and was originally straight.

First of all, thx for the video :) The Árpád dynasty didn't just lose power, the main branch died out. Their symbol stayed on the coat of arms of kings after them, because they were all related. In fact, even the Royal Family of the UK is related to them as well. The rebellion wasn't lasted a year. It was recognized at first, then the king vas deposed and Franz Joseph walked back on the recognition. After that, it was an independence war and not a rebellion really. But that last one is nitpicking :) Also while I nitpick, the whole thing was about 1,5 year not one :D :P 1919 - No, the communists weren't crushed by foreign powers. The commies looted everything that wasn't nailed down, murdered and then simply fled. Also, the people rebelled against them. It did happen at the same time when the Romanian army pushed through, but that's a coincidence. Also-also, there is a major part missing: There were a hippie revolution of sorts in 1918, they even removed the crown from the flag, which was pretty similar to the '47 flag, but the shield shape was different. They are also the ones who should be blaimed for the previously mentioned defeat, because they started to demlilitarize the country and let the neighboring countries take territories with ethnic Hungarians lived at the time. '57 - No, it was in '56, less than two weeks after the rebellion started Current use: Both versions official, but the flag with the crest is special, it can only be used (without permission) basically by the government and its extensions. So, the Parliament, the Judical branch, the head of state, the army, etc. The rest of us can use the plain flag.

I'm hungarian, I live in Hungary, and on national holidays there are flags displayed on the street on street lamps and such, and they're almost always the regular tricolor without the coat of arms, and it's quite rare to see the version with the coat of arms, but you can find it in some places! Thanks for the video, learned some new things about my own country!

The colours have meaning where the red means power, the white is for loyalty and green represents hope. Also on the coat of arms the 4 white (originally silver) lines stand for the 4 main rivers of the Hungarian kingdom, the Danube (Dúna), Tisza, Drava and Sava The double cross actually has a religious meaning of Egypt being united in 1800 BC, and on the coat of arms we're told here that it represented Hungary being a Christian Kingdom.

Hey, the video was great but there were some mistakes, The Árpád-dynasty's "male line" died out and there was no heir for the throne! So it didn't lost power. The Patriarchal Cross was used by the most Orthodox Nations in Eastern Europe, for example Serbian's had it with White cross on Golden flag or Red cross on White flag! And the Hungarian Rebellion in 1848-49 wasn't destroyed by the Austrian's, the Austrian army was pretty weakened and the war was turning after Hungarian campaign's in Spring of 1849 called "Spring Campaign" but after the Austrians left the Country in the Summer of 1849, because of great losses and bad cohesion! And when they once more entered Hungary to destroy the Hungarian Rebellion they made an Alliance with the Russian Empire! And the Hungarian Army wasnt able to fight against 2 major empire's!

As a Hungarian i have to mention that the double cross is the apostolic double cross, as the Hungarian kings were given the apostolic title by the Pope. Thats the official story. Thus starting from Stephen I every king was the Apostolic King of the Kingdom of Hungary.
@jmeneshaton
@jmeneshaton 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry but not the Pope gave us, as the Hungarian kings , just as Stephen I. also established all the churches in the Hungarian Kingdom. just as the Pope had not send the Holy Crown to the king. If the Pope sent any crown it was not the coronation crown. The Apostolic title goes to the kingdom, the Hungarian king is an Apostol - this came from this and earlier acts happened by leaders in Pannonia. The referred this last one by Stephen generally as the scythian king or Hungarian king in person of Stephen I selected and voted to Rome leading christian churches Against byzantine version - established such churches in the Kingdom and established closer connections to Rome. He made it to so called catholic - that means universal - at least that was the intent , as it that time the christian church was parted to Rome led smaller and Constantine established official romanian where the main priest were always the Byzantine emperor only later the patriarch. And also some independent smaller churches were as well. Think about it : in the time of Atilla there were no Pope - that main priest was just bishop of Rome. So as the most strong kingdom and power in Europe he could established or tried to establish a unified christian churches. This gave the veto rights to them at the election of Pope, only the Hungarian king has that right. Franz Joseph was the last king who could use it to block a Pope to be selected for election. Some years later there was get off by a sinodus or conference -- those who had not right to take away that right. as it was not given by a Pope as the later Popes were not Apostle just as the Hungarian kings were.

I remember there was a national vote regarding the flag during the regime change, between the tricolor flag without the coat of arms, with the Kossuth coat of arms, and with the coat of arms with the Royal Crown. The result of the election favored the one with the Royal Crown, so I suppose that is the official national flag, although in reality both that one and the simple tricolor are used.

Hello. The video was very well done. I would like to say the following things as positive criticism, I don't want to offend you. 1., At 1.31 you said that . "Red, yellow and green." In reality, it is not yellow, but white. What you say in 7.19 is white instead of yellow. (Why am I dating this little mistake? 🤷‍♂️) 2., At the Árpád strip, the white stripes indicate/indicated the four big rivers found in the "great" Hungarian nation: Danube, Tisza, Ráva and Száva. I think the video was very well done, I hope that you will make the flags of other nations with such precision and dedication.

Second, I'm a littlw disappointed you didn't talk more about the Austria-era Great Hungary crest, which I think is the most interesting. Flanked by the 2 angels, you can see the Hungarian crest in the center surrounded by local crests. These include Szeklerland, Slavonia, Croatia, Transylvania, etc.

Hiii!! So in hungary we use both flags (both the simple tricolor and the one with the coat of arms). But there are flags that you didn't talked about. For an example with Szent István (Stephan l) our flag was full red and had a zigzag-is shape, like Nepal, then we had flags with just crosses on and with also an interesting shape, on those flags we mostly used different symbols from the coat of arms, then we had the Anjou flag after the Árpáds died out, then one from Luxemburgi Zsigmond and (big time jump) one from 1918 when there where no crown on the coat of arms Also there are some minor mistakes with the spelling like Béla isn't spelled with an 'i', 'é' is like uh.. Like in w *a* y or when you spelled 'magyar' it sounded like 'Madzsar' which is kindau nderstandable beacuse 'gy' and 'dzs' are similar, but 'dzs' is like *gy* m or *je* welry and 'gy' well.. There aren't much words pronounced with a 'gy'. Ofc the hungarian language is pretty hard so I don't blame you, sometimes even we, Hungarians misspell it lol Good video tho, keep up the good work!! Sok szeretet Magyarországról!!💓💖

It is a common misconception that prior to the 1867 compromise it was just Habsburg Empire, that is Austria, and the Hungarian Kingdom did not exist and only in 1867 the Habsburgs acknowledged the separate Hungarian Kingdom. You also said something like that. Well the Hungarian Kingdom existed throughout the Habsburg rule, the Emperor had to be crowned separately with the Hungarian Crown to become the King of Hungary and assume the right to rule Hungary. The Hungarian Kingdom was always a separate entity within the Habsburg Empire and the term Austria never covered Hungary. Without being crowned by the Saint Hungarian Crown he/she had no legitime right to rule Hungary, so anyone could have just ignore his/her decisions. There were attempts to ignore this, like in the case of Joseph II who did not crown himself with the Hungarian Crown, but he therefore had to revoke all of his decisions later on, as he made them illegitim. So the Hungarian Kingdom existed continuously from the year 1000. The only difference was that during the Habsburg rule the Habsburg Kings acknowledged only partial selfgovernence of the Hungarian nation: eg. even if there was a Hungarian Parliament (Diet) in Pozsony (today Bratislava) it had limited relevance and the Austrian secret police kept the developments under control. For instance the representatives of the Hungarian nation should have elected and approve the king and the Habsburgs obviously ignored or rather, they made sure that only loyal Hungarian nobels had a right to vote. All financial decisions were made in Vienna, keeping Hungary relatively undeveloped. Hence Hungarians rebelled against the Habsburg rule and the Compromise in 1867 fixed these acknowledging the separate Hungarian government with complex selfgovernance.

Very well made video, it's also historically accurate, but I would also confirm what others said here: the 4 stripes are representing the rivers of the Carpathian Basin and they were actually silver on the original coat of arms. But everything you said was correct. As for today's flag I like both versions, but I can imagine that they will restore the one with the coat of arms as Orbán would pretty much crown himself as king of Hungary if he could :D

Hi! This was an interesting journey in our history. About the flag: the official flag is the one without the crest. Our constitution defines the meaning of the colors: red is for power, strength, white is for allegiance, green is for hope. The coat of arms, including the Holy Crown of Hungary, is the official symbol of the state. The flag with this coat of arms is defined as the "ceremonial flag", and the use of this variant is not obligatory for anyone, nor the public institutions. But if you go out to an international sports event where Hungarian supporters occur, you will probably see the ceremonial flag in their hands. :-)

We dont view the coat of arms as a part of the flag, however it can be placed on the flag. It doesnt change the flag itself though. Official buildings have the flag with the coat of arms because both are individually official symbols of the country. With or without the coat of arms, we dont think the two verssions of the flag is two versions. They are the same flag. The coat of arms is just an extra symbol by itself, it doesnt change the flag per se

Now, answering your question in the end of the video, I see the tri-color flag more often, or let's just say that is the only flag I see, because we don't really use the one with the insignia in the middle. Well, even if we don't use it I still like the other one better, because the default tri-color flag is boring to me, there's nothing special in it. I would like the one with the insignia in it as the official flag. ❤🤍💚

There are more layers with regards to the cross. The cross on the triple hill means Holy Land which is an ancient symbol. Of course it’s widely used by Christianity. Furthermore the symbol itself is a letter (eGY) in the old Hungarian runic alphabet (with the meaning ONE) in latin letter written GY, and in English prononced something like “dj”. EGY-Ház=One-Unity-Holy-Saint. Kings of Hungary has got apostolic title from Rome pope therefore double cross has a second (less sophisticated) meaning as apostolic cross, but nothing to do with Byzantine, since the Apostolic kings had got special power and privilege from the Roman Catholic Church. All in all the cross standing on a triple mount is also a symbol from ancient times. The royal coat of arms is depicted with angels, which is also can be seen on the Hero’s square in Budapest (Archangel Gabriel holds the Hungarian Holy Crown and the apostolic double cross in his hands). So I would choose this nice flag with the 2 angels.

thank you for the video about my homeland. The tricolour version without the coat of arms can be seen on flag days when all the flagpoles fly the national banner. No sign of the coat of arms version officially, it would probably be a great anachronism because we have no king any more so there's no need of the crown in our national symbols. However, we have seen actions in history when wishes and desires override common sense and reason.

I've looked into the legal details if anyone's interested. The original Hungarian coat of arms was - for all intents and purposes - banned between 1950 and 1989 though I don't think there was an actual law stating this but in practice the police would've taken you away for using it. In 1990, after the fall of communism, the coat of arms was restored but not onto the flag as the video also states. That didn't stop people from using it on the flag though. So in 1995, instead of trying to strictly police the usage of the flag, the government decided to make it a valid alternative basically legalising the already existing custom. (1995. LXXXIII.) This allowed double usage was reaffirmed in the 2011. CCII. law which is still in effect today. Having the empty flag as the main one is a legacy of goulash communism but it will probably stay this way as opinions on it are divided. Some say Hungary had the first horizontally red-white-green flag so there's no need for us to differentiate it with the coat of arms. Others say the coat of arms and the flag are two different symbols and should not be mixed. Other people believe that the one with the coat of arms should be the state flag, while the empty one should be the ethnic flag. Also there are people who prefer the empty flag because their political views don't agree with the symbolism of the coat of arms. So this allowed double usage is probably the best solution which will stay and yes, it is random. :D

I am a half Slovakian half Hungarian living in Slovakia and what I see is that the version with the coat of arms is used by more nationalistic people, I guess is more exciting :}. What I wanted to ask is how come you dated the double cross to the 12th century ? We in Slovakian schools learn that the Byzantine symbol came when saint Constantine and Method came to the Great Moravian empire to give the Slavs there their own alphabet and translate the Bible. Which happened in the 9th century and what would explain why was the double cross more important in the upper part of Hungary (Felvidék). Is this false ?

The double cross on the coat of arms is dated from the 12th century as it first appears on coins minted by Béla III. It became part of the royal coat of arms under Béla IV in the 1230’s. The mound appears in the 1300’s to keep the cross from floating but on most depictions it’s a single mound or a Gothic clover motif. It came to be three mounds in the 1400’s and became distinct elongated hills in the late 1500’s. It is possible that earlier Slavs used the double cross as well as emblems but there is scant evidence for that and elaborate coats of arms and flags were not in style in the 900’s.
