There is one interesting thing about Serbia.( I don't know if that's the case in the rest of the Balkans). Our boomers (my parents) used to call our little boys "ćeri", meaning douther, like they wanted to tell us that we were as much loved as them, even more, and they used to call their little girls "sine", meaning son, as they wanted to say that they were as valuable as the sons.

@zoranmarkovic1123 Ай бұрын
@@GoranJovanovic-fr1igIt's true what you say. I remember from my childhood the feeling I had when an elderly person calls you (sine), son. This works very positively, respectfully and gives you the feeling that he loves you as much as his own son. When you are older and someone says this to you, it means that they are letting you know that you are younger and it acts as a kind of advice, sometimes also a reminder that you are still inexperienced and that it is better to listen to the elders.

Born and lived in France for 39 years (plus 8 in serbia from 2 to 10), back in 2020 just at covid start, goes once in 1-2 years to see my French house, literally 😅 quality of life and security in Serbia, compared to France is uncomparable, and I'm far from Belgrade... Small village with increduble view, my own cinema of 85 m2, pizza hoven, 6 huge teraces on 4 levels, 1850 m2 in total space, 450 m2 underground with pool... External pool next year... In France for this I'll need to be multi milionair 😂 here all this for 700K maybe less... Near Paris for this price it will be 300-350 m2 with no view and certainly not this quality and gardens... So Serbia is really a great country for living.

Wonderful video, glad you like it here, I relate to Alex in many aspects, I'm an ex bartender, I live here all my life and work for the company in the US now. I gotta address one thing here that really rubbed me the wrong way, "Even with the girls it's temporary, but at some point you kinda expect them to go off and do their own thing." Here, if you really care about your family, you're always expected to have a place for them in your home. If you don't, you may try for example building a second floor on the house, helping your kids buy their first property or coming to a solution that's not something along the lines of "you're 18/25/30 yr old, you're on your own now buddy" Most people rent only when it's necessary But you're also obliged to take care of your parents and grandparents or finding someone to hire to take care of them (retirement homes are unpopular here) That's why nobody ends up homeless because of a large medical bill or something similar You may have to set boundaries for your extended family (familija) but you're always a family with your ancestors and descendants (porodica)

Love how you are mentioned in good way differences in between children life and development in America and Serbia which once was part of Yugoslavia. Yes there were free and secure life for all and specially for children, then respect for those people needed more attention when goes to doctors or in public transport . I admire u for living in Serbia as an American, i would find it nearly impossible. But , while we are young we can handle the differences, but , be aware , as the older age comes, because that is when we all want to go back where we came from. Growing up in Belgrade - I really though the thing about pregnant women skipping the line/queue, or even dad with a baby/toddler entering a bus/tram and someone offering them a seat - was a universal norm everywhere. After moving to Amsterdam - I learned it's not. Also a bit sad to hear stories about kids/people in Serbia starting to adopt that part of western culture (or it's side effect of staring at phone screen, headphones on/in ears). Luckily there's enough older folks to "nudge" them. If not bus/tram driver refusing to move until someone gives up their seat.

With mobile phones today even the children and parents call before they pop in. Only the families that have preserved a very traditional way of life do that, though it sounds weird and indecent in big cities. We have a lot of historic cities from different periods, prehistory, Roman empire, medieval, Ottoman empire... Nature is dissent. Economy is bad, big majority of people working for 600 euros. Institutions are corrupt and chaotic, human rights and freedom are on very low level. Serbian is very safe country, their is no dangers areas. About mentality, it's third world country. You can buy anything in Serbia from college degree to land and people. Now identities i speak about are about individualism and gender. This is much more traditional and pretty much plain identity of family life and role. Of course speaking in comparison to USA or western Europe. Now diversity. What i had in mind is literal melting pot of thousands of years cultures that were crossing the Balkan peninsula. You can see this in ethnic diversity as well as simple culture of food, clothing, way of life overall. Serbia is on the crossroads of so called "global north and global south". You can find people who admire western way of life, but also you see people enjoying the slow and mediteranian style of living. So if I understand, Alex is in his mid to late 30's, proudly living with his family in his in-laws house (a distinct Kaludjerica style?), working remotely for a US company during afternoons and evenings for the last five years. After these five years he barely speaks any Serbian and, besides the people who live in the house, hardly knows anyone else. Given this level of cultural immersion, I am a bit puzzled how he can actually make any sensible comparisons between two countries and cultures. Alex mentioned that he was born in suburban US and spent some time living in NYC. Given his natural curiosity, I wonder if he actually spent some quality time in NYC parks to find out that they are full of children and families doing picnics, birthday parties and playing games. Granted, each culture has its ups and downs, but I am not sure why would Alex be a good candidate to make this comparison.
