In this video, I explain what happened to our vertical grow wall made from pallets designed for growing vegetables. This type of food growing technique is great for growing vegetables in small spaces but I give several tips and a demonstration to show how to have better success.

I just moved to Maine, USA. We don’t have a long grow season. This will be my first year of growing a garden. They say you can’t teach an old dog 🐶 new tricks (I’m 64), but I figure I can learn as I go and I’m sure some things will grow even with inexperience. The property belonged to a logging company before I moved here so the ground is a maze of tree roots so I can’t dig. I don’t have the finances to make raised beds so this year I’m going to use the packing boxes I used to move. I wish someone who lived up north would start a KZbin program, they all live in warm climates. I enjoy your videos and your humor and get a lot of information that I will need no matter what climate. I thank Jesus for you and may He continually bless

Hi Mark, I've discovered your channel over the past 2 weeks and haven't stopped watching. I have lived in high rise apartments for 7 years now in Melbourne and have recently bought in the north-western suburbs. We are due to move in over Easter this year and I'm so excited to start preparing our own garden with your tips. We will have a decent back yard with a shed but your small garden series has given me so many ideas. I will be buying 3 of those big Birdie planter boxes and going from there. You're an inspiring bloke, keep doing what you're doing. Cheers.

I really appreciate the follow-up on this DIY! I have failed a few times at patio gardening and it's always such an expensive disappointment. It's sooo useful to see someone follow through and actually try to troubleshoot and improve on a diy idea! I'd love to see an watering system developed with apartment dwellers in mind (who may not have access to outside tap). Ideally one that is ADHD proof.

I'm in the northern hemisphere (northeastern U.S.,) and we are now at high summer. Last year I tried a vertical garden, made from pallet with landscaping cloth and plastic for water retention, watering 2 to 3 times a day, but failed and lettuce bolted before reaching harvest. This year I was able to transfer seed to low containers and beds (which did badly, again , because we had cold, wet/cloudy weather, fast followed by hot/sunny bolt-) but I'll still have the seeds! One of these days I'll have lettuce, not today, not this year.

Thanks Mark, as always an enjoyable watch. Really appreciate you mate, learnt a lot from you and have used the info to produce some food, inc a successful pallet grow, though i made it at a slight angle rather than vertical and am having great results. It still dries a lot but not as bad as vertical and the plants seem to really like it. as always thanks for sharing and thank you even more for caring.

You do not know how happy I am to have watched this video today! This morning my main goal was to transplant my lettuce, using a repurposed drawer chest but I had far too many and had no idea where to put the rest. I moved to Portugal last year and it’s very hot so I’ve put the lettuce in the shade of our lemon tree. THEN I came in and watched this video and actually had an old palette so went right back out, did it up and have attached it to the side of the chest :) Since moving to Portugal this is my first time gardening, as we have a lot of land and lots of time! We had a lot of fruit trees already here, lemons, oranges, plums are in abundance, cherries, apples, pears and grapes (in the north of Portugal grapes are EVERYWHERE). I’ve now got about 20 oxheart tomato plants just starting to fruit, plenty of oregano, sweetcorn has just started sprouting and basil. I’m having a problem with peppers and chillis as they don’t seem to be germinating...starting them off in pots and have tried a few times now. I have literally binge watched most of your videos today, and they are giving me so so much inspiration and such useful knowledge. Especially as you are also growing in a hot climate. I also love your motto :) Thank you Mark!

Hey mate, in case it helps. I tried a similar pallet wall with strawberries and found that a top only irrigation system didn’t quite cut it. The bottom area was still a bit dry. I ran a few vertical weeping pipes from top to bottom instead. I think for the next one I might also add a little clay into the soil mix and see if that helps hold water a bit better too

I can't wait to see the peas in a month or so. It will probably be beautiful. I dropped some old seeds in my garden (just started in our new yard) and I had all sorts of things come up. Most of the seeds were from between 2008 and 2013. I found room for most of them, but have no idea what to do with the extra 20 plants, tomatoes and cucumbers mostly! I guess it's a good problem to have, right?
