What Happened To Wario Land? Why Nintendo Forgot It & How They Can Bring It Back

One of my favorite pictures ever is me at 3 years old with my brother 7 years older than me, watching him play his GameBoy Color. I looked so fascinated and amazed watching him play this crazy game. What game was he playing? Wario Land 3. Wario Land 3 is the first videogame I ever laid eyes on, and it's still the best I've ever played. Never forgot about that game ever, played it hundreds of times. Imagine my delight when, later in life, I was overjoyed to discover that the rest of the series was just as good as 3. These games are a perfect refinement of what platformers should be: High production values, a fun crazy character and visuals that could draw anyone in, and gameplay interesting enough to keep players engaged for its full runtime. Wario Land belongs in the most prestigious lists of gaming, right next to Bomberman, and many many others. I think with the correct marketing and timing, Wario Land could see an amazing revival.

@@Demeech Thank you. It really is. Nintendo has undergone a fundamental change in the way they do things. I don't think they are nearly as bold with their faith in designs and choices as much as they used to be. That's why I'm heartbroken that Nintendo has not put out a new Wario Land game in 12 years. I still have faith though that we will see a revival of the adventure platformer. There's still plenty of ideas to see through with the Wario Land trademark game design.

There was Wario World, and I think the lack of transformations could be from that game before Shake it. For the people wondering why Nintendo stopped making Wario Land games, the studio that made the games was dissolved in the company reorganization in 2004 by Satoru Iwata. That's why other non first party developers only continued to make Wario games, same as with Metroid which even had the same developer team as the Wario Land games.

I've been waiting and hoping for years now ever since The Switch was release for a new Wario Land game to come out. They really need to bring it back, It's been far too long and I really do not care for the WarioWare series. Isola for a remake of the Virtual Boy Wario or a sequel of Wario World, But I'm definitely okay for a new Wario Land game. Who knows maybe Good-Feel Co might bring the series back someday. Also every time when a Nintendo Direct is announced I always hope they announce a brand new Wario Land game.

Demeech yeah, 1 2 Switch should’ve been the Wii Sports of the Switch, as a stand-alone title, lol, Nintendo should honestly use WarioWare as a fun way to show all gimmicks and controls the console has, it was that way for Touched, Smooth Moves, Gold, and even Games and Wario, with the likes of Twisted and DIY doing something on their own and still working like a charm ( Twisted with the gyroscope add on, and DIY with a level/music/comic strip creator and online sharing)

I’ve seen gameplay of Virtual boy Wario Land and my favorite feature in the game is that you can combine two power ups (i.e. eagle + sea dragon = king dragon) to make a new and stronger power up. It’s a cool idea that I like to see in more platformers.

Had my power go out during Hurricane Milton. All my devices where out of charge. So I dug up my old gameboy, found my wario 2 cart (grey), and gamed away. Was suprised how much the game has held up. The branching paths combined with the treasure, is what makes that game so magical.

We (Wario Land fans) have to organize somehow, on facebook fan page or twitter account(probably both) to promote the idea of remake, beacuse hashtags from few fans are definitely not enough to get Ninendo's attention. I see at least one video per year about this series on youtube, and every time people in comments are like "yeah we need new Wario game" and... that all. I have no idea how much fans(usually already adult fans) could be mobilized to do that, but in my opinion there is no other way, we need a lot of peoples. And by the way, for me it's very difficult to choose only one favorite Wario Land game, because i love all of them and every single are unique on some way. Wario Land 2 was my first gameboy game ever and i have the biggest sentiment to this one, so that would propably be my choice.

Nintendo is not that consistent with most of their franchises. Besides staples like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Zelda, and Kirby that appear on every console and handheld, they tend to forget about past characters. What happened to F-Zero? Starfox? Is Punch-Out coming back... again? Is MOTHER even a thing anymore? I could go on. Usually these franchises will have a strong run for a few consecutive generations, and then Nintendo will focus on new IP's. Excitebike was a thing on the NES and then it just disappeared. Years later we got 3 Excitebike games on the Wii, only for the series to vanish again. I've learned to just appreciate what we get from the big N. Wario Land took up the platforming mantle where Mario left off, and was an incredible showcase of ingenuity and level design. I had a lot of fun with it, and Shake-It ended on a high note. Will we see more Wario adventures? Who knows. Only time will tell.

Great video! I got my start playing Super Mario Land & SML2 on my original yellow brick Gameboy. I absolutely loved Wario as the villain and as a character. I then fell in love with the Wario Land series, spending countless hours on WL2 in particular. Since buying my switch in 2017, I've lived in hope that Nintendo would take advantage of the joycons and re-release Shake Dimension. My kids are 4 and 6 and have recently become massive mario fans and it's rekindled my passion for Wario Land. I really hope they revisit Wario in the near future. Really interesting about the Virtual Boy version as I'd never even heard of it before and it looks great!

If Nintendo is to revive Wario Land, it better do it soon, or it'll run the risk of Paper Mario's fate: being completely one-upped by indies. Pizza Tower is only a month away from release, and Anton Blast is going to be even MORE like Wario Land than that! However, both are shooting for emulating Land 4 more than anything, so maybe a return to Land 2 or 3 style would be a good move. Of course, they also need to be GOOD to count, since Paper Mario's state was due to skimping on quality, not quantity.

This retrospective was very informative, you could try to improve your emphasis when ending sentences, also at 16:55 you say "because of how animated he is". Do you mean how good the animation is? Another thing is the structure of your video, you jump between reviewing the games and fanboying VB Warioland quite a bit ;) Gotta pay attention to stuff like that but from the actual content this was pretty well made. My favorite has to be WL4 because its just an amazing game in itself, the creativity, the atmosphere, the music is still unmatched today. Btw you mentioned Master of Disguise, what do you think of that? I think it carried over a lot of the creative ideas but felt more than the by then mainstream perception of Wario like from Smash, kind of a shame. But yeah good thing people still care about Wario. Thank you for the constructive criticism. I will definitely try to improve upon that. When I said "animated" I mean it in a way like he's a cartoon character. If you look at the 2D Mario games, Mario doesn't have personality. But Wario does. You can see Wario wink while doing the shoulder dash in Wario Land 3. I have yet to play Master of Disguise. Been trying to get my hands on it, but haven't been able to find it. I'll update you once I do find it.

A Wario Land 5 in the style of Mario Wonder would be the best of both worlds but because of how non-kidfriendly the Wario Land series as a whole kind of is with its metroid style gameplay i cannot see it. Nice, I'd prefer a game that takes more inspiration from 4. I'd want Wario have a health meter and not be invulnerable but still have some enemies or objects that transform Wario instead of hurting him. The problem with having both transformations and damage is that it may be a little unfair to newcomers that don’t really know what transforms Wario and what hurts him. If I didn’t knew WL4 already before playing it myself I would’ve never guessed that the arrows don’t hurt and instead inflate you. A new game should have some kind of way to Telegraph what attacks actually hurt. Maybe they should color-code it, maybe give only the hurtful enemies/ attacks a red outline or something

I think of the most important things the Wario Land games had was looking weird and out of place. With Wario Land 4 being the best example with the worlds and creatures looking grotesque. Wario Land Shake It is a nice looking game don't get me wrong, but it was missing that style from the old games. Wario World did have some weirdness and creepiness to it, but the gameplay wasn't that amazing. Master of Disguise was just boring and easily forgettable. And Wario Ware is a completely different franchise for Wario.

There are black box NES games that were brought back not because of nostalgia, but because they were part of Nintendo's history, regardless of how well they sold back then. In other words, Nintendo made sure to add the black box games to Switch Online first because they were the first games to come out on NES, even if the only one people played the most back then was Super Mario Bros. I'm glad we have Zelda, Metroid, Punch Out, ect. It's missing a lot of good games still, but i think since Switch Online started, they added some real gems. I think people get upset though when games are added that nobody cares about. I totally understand that. Same goes for SNES. I hear that Game Boy is being added soon to Switch Online. That's good because the Game Boy has a lot of good games that not many got to play because they stuck with consoles instead of handhelds. Wario Land games still have a shot. They can still come back. But not if Nintendo only adds the usual crap.

I played pretty much all Wario Land games up to 4 in order back when I was a kid, but my friends and me played way more Wario Land 3. After some time I was able to play Wario Land 4 back then and I think to this day, even if Wario Land 3 is my favorite in terms of nostalgia, I think Wario Land 4 on its core is objectively better. There are obviously some aspects Wario Land 2 and 3 were superior to 4 which were exploration (world map), collectibles and sound design (example is how Wario's dash attack sounds way better and has a lot more details to it in 3 than 4, but most likely this is because of memory limitations and deadlines and they decided to prioritize sprite art details); but even after that, 4 was able to capture 2 and 3 uniquiness, added way better gameplay and created the rush time-limit mechanic which in my opinion wasn't a negative point plus Wario felt more powerful and faster with its new move and the game even emphasized this Ren and Stimpy'ish humor that fit with Wario a little too well. If a new Wario Land comes, I hope 2, 3 (exploration, collectibles and interactive world map) and 4 (animations, smooth and fast paced gameplay, puzzles and level design) are being considered as key parts.

The rise in so-called "Wario-likes" with games like Pizza Tower and ANTONBLAST, to say nothing of games like Antonball Deluxe, Treasure Tech, Duke Dashington, and Shovel Knight: King of Cards that are highly reminiscent of the Wario Land series, show that there IS a desire to see more Wario Land games, Nintendo is just refusing to tap into it, being more content to just have WarioWare be the main outlet of Wario-based content... and don't get me wrong, I love me some WarioWare, but it's like there's this whole half of a character's history that they now only barely seem to acknowledge or care about, and that's rather disappointing. What I can say is this, in this year of 2022, the year of the 30th anniversary of Wario's debut in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, I'm more into Wario Land now more than ever, and I love that not only are there more people getting into Wario Land and that there are more "Wario-like" games being made, but there are more and more videos retroactively looking at the series as a whole, and why they're so appealing. Wario Land fans might be somewhat started for content as far as actual Wario Land games go, but it increasingly feels less true as time goes on... Though yeah, Nintendo should totally #BringBackWarioLand while they're at it.

I'm hoping that this September Nintendo adds classic GB/C games to the switch and that Wario Land is included. If they can see how much we play the OG Wario Land games, maybe we'll get some more in the future. In all honesty, I just want more Wario games period. If I lived in a world where everything were perfect, I would want a 2D Wario game like Wario Land 4, but it would also have story elements and characters from the Wario Ware series. Oh, and include waluigi too. He deserves love outside of Mario Kart.

This is a very interesting video in 2022. For starters, Nintendo seems split on the idea of innovation vs. obsession with maintaining the formula. In 2022 alone, Kirby and the Forgotten Land innovated the most out of any Kirby game (besides maybe Robobot), is lauded as one of the best by critics and casuals, and it outsold Star Allies by about 600,000 copies. On the other hand, Pokemon's by far most risky title PL: A was outsold by the terrible BDSP, despite the former being praised much more. Unfortunately, NSMBUD outsold the more creative Mario Maker 2 by almost 6 million copies, however the former was likely not played very much after its release, and MM2 is played a lot more today despite its lower sales. Sales don't always correspond to quality and fun (Pokemon), but it's likely that Nintendo doesn't prioritize that. Their revisit to Wario wasn't the game fans had been asking for, unfortunately. Maybe they'll make a lackluster 6th entry at the 15 year mark just like Mario Strikers, or they could make a great follow up game at the 22 year mark like Pokemon Snap. Hell, Pikmin 4 had been pleaded for since it's predecessor's release, and we only just now learned of its development. Who knows how high the priority is to develop Wario Land? But, since Nintendo has one mainline 2D Mario and one exceptional, limitless 2D Mario, it's unlikely that they'll make another one for the Switch. There won't be any competition between Wario and Mario, so they don't have that excuse anymore. A game that reminds me a lot of Wario Land's level design in Antonblast, an indie Wario-like. I haven't played it, but it looks like a spiritual successor to the WL series. Maybe, just maybe,,,,,

The saddest thing is Sonic is trying to be a Mario clone. Due of NSMB success SEGA made infamous Sonic 4 and Sonic Lost World, which is considered as Super Mario Galaxy rip-off. Despite SLW didn't sell well, SEGA keep following this way, hence more frequent appearance of Zetis and Classic Sonic in later games.
