This is true of the entire mid-west. Steel, autos and other manufacturing were allowed to move over seas for more profit leaving the working class low paying jobs and not enough of them. The End

I have been in this area my whole life (35 years). Mill Creek park covers a large area here. At Lanterman's Mill (photo with the waterfall) they brought it back to life and will still make flour there. You can see the whole thing being powered by the water wheel in the building.

The trails and scenery may not be the tourist trap that others receive but, for as much of the natural beauty that Mill Creek has, I'd put it up against any metro park. I'd say one of the largest metropolitan parks in the US should probably earn a little more respect than "descent".

Large doesn't necessarily mean good. I've been to Mill Creek, it's lovely but the surrounding areas and atmosphere are filled with dread due to dilapidated suburbs and industries north of the park. Metro parks are public amenities, they are attractive when people are actively using them, but since Youngstown lost so much of its population, it's feel kinda off.

Live about 15 minutes away from Youngstown. Yes, the surrounding areas are messed up and crime is pretty prevalent. But downtown is beautiful, and as long as YSU doesn’t die out, (not looking too good) it’s a great college town and feels like a small Cleveland. And Cleveland’s pretty nice. Lots of fight and passion in that city. Go penguins!

The good thing is that Youngstown (Little Chicago) has made changes to make this a college town now, which took a long time but it's happening all around the downtown area. every city has a past, and I don't think true youngstonians will ever ever want to forget ours. The future finally looks bright for the area... slowly and surely but positively!

I moved from southern California to the Youngstown area. I love it here. There is a great cost of living, nice people, good food, and lots of opportunity.

Honestly this episode could have included all of eastern ohio border towns and western PA border towns. Beaverfalls, Aliquippa, Beaver county as a whole. Anyone near the ohio river that depended on the steel industry fell.

Grew up in Warren, just north of Youngstown, but the same issues. My grandfathers worked in the mills after WWII, my dad worked at Lordstown 50+ years. Both my kids have Youngstown listed as place of birth. But I got RIF’d at a local bank, couldn’t find any local work, we’ve had to move south. Now I’m in Jax, Fl. Still miss the fall up there.

Youngstown’s decline is very similar to Niagara Falls NY. Like Youngstown, Niagara Falls was a prosperous proud industrial city that was primarily dependent on the chemicals and abrasive industries. When those companies were bought, many factories were closed causing rapid decline and rampant decay. Niagara Falls is an empty shell of its former self having less than half its peak population and switching to tourism and services has not panned out for the city.

Now it makes sense why houses are cheaper in Youngstown. Best place to live for people who can only hold bad minimum wage jobs and have to pay rent. Life is much easier here with cheaper housing. I moved back to Youngstown after 45 years to help with my aging father. Nothing has really changed, they still only want manufacturing businesses. This keeps the pay scale low and worker skill level low. Not interested in high tech, even though they will point to a few pocket initiatives, but nothing will really come from these. After his passing, I will get the H$#L out.

And I know the best you can hope for is stabilizing the city's population, but census estimates has the City of Youngstown hitting 50,000 residents by 2030... In 1980 it has 110,000 residents and was built to hold about 225,000 residents. It will always be home, but it's reason for being died with the steel industry.

Contrary to the narration, US Steel has never filed for bankruptcy as this film declares. Though they went through some very dark times, particularly in the 1980's. Still, this short film does capture the sadness that is Youngstown, Ohio. I had always hoped that things would turn around, but the latest census data indicates the painful decline continues.

It would be to good end this with a big drone view of that old steel mill now! I was a kindergarten commuter. My mom drove me by that steel mill (second SUN of YTown) every school day for a year in the 70's. I NEVER NEVER would have imagined they would paint the roof! They painted the roof! The mill looks SO much better now and it does not stink. It used to really smell. They all did. The entire area around it as well looks so much better by removing the original mill housing projects and replacing them with nice housing and small parks.

Sadly, many of our great cities have fallen victim to overseas competition. Our government needs to step up and protect the american worker now more than ever.. Detroit, youngstown, Buffalo, are just a few of many that as the steel industry and the auto industries have moved quite a bit overseas, these cities are disappearing fast.. falling into blight... and US Steel, Republic and Bethlehem steel plants all disappeared in the late 70's early 80's and have crushed this part of the country... Manufacturing and WWII got us out of the depression.. the current politicians think another war will do the same.. but sadly, the Manufacturing jobs that really helped during the war and to pull us from the depression no longer exist in this country. Unions have priced the american worker out of business and teh government not protecting the workers have hurt just as much. It's time to realize... if they have been in office for more than 2 terms.. THEY ARE THE PROBLEM.. vote them out!

I moved here in early 90s but job had me move across the border but when I had a chance to buy a house in July of 2020 I chose to move back. They have revamped the downtown area especially on Federal St some of the bars and restraints off some good food and music.

My grandpa worked for republic steel, my mom for the cafaro hospital and I've been a cab driver here for 13yrs. Y-Town limps on, you forgot Vallourec Steel the only mill that didn't close. It's got the old school buildings still cranking away and we got a billion dollar facility that makes steel pipes for the natural gas industry.

Youngstown Ohio, l remember that place I lived on schenley westside in the 80’s I graduated in 86 from Rayen I do have memories of mill creek park and taking the bus to boardman mall after school I moved away because I felt the city falling apart from within 🥲 it was heart breaking because my family is still there today. Today my new home is carmel california 🙌🥰 best decision I have ever made back in 93 stay safe out there and my prayers go out to everyone who is still there, 🙌

In my opinion, probably only Flint and East St. Louis are worse places than Youngstown (of American cities that size). However, of those three cities, Youngstown is by far solidly in the best position to reinvent itself and make a comeback. ESL for sure is too far gone, and until they get the water situation fully figured out in Flint it probably is as well. Youngstown still has many strengths they can build on.

I live in Youngstown, oh. And I have to say, it’s really not much for the tourist type. I’ve done everything there is to do in the area but it is a genuinely nice place to live, granted the south side has progressively gotten worse over the time. It’s definitely a great place to start a family. The mills have dwindled down to barely anything but they’re still pumping out steel and so much more manufacture product, we no longer have the GM plant in lordstown, however they implemented the new electric trunk into the plant and they’ve been trying to get everything together

I’m 72, grew up on the west side, left in 1975. Youngstown, it’s economy and people have suffered much since the days when I was growing up there. All these years and much travel later I know a couple of things to be true. Mill Creek Park is a unique and glorious asset for the area. No place in the country offers more great choices for pizza. I will add that, having grown up at a time when the mills were belching smoke 24/7, cars spewing their own unfiltered smoke, everyone burned trash and leaves in their backyard and nearly everyone smoked cigarettes, the air quality in Youngstown is a welcome sight to see.

I higherspeed rail line from Pittsburg to Cleveland would help if it had no level crossings and could attain a spead simular to what Michigan is trying to do with Chicago to Detriot - 110m.p.h. average speed.

Though historically you are correct on the demise of the steel industry in Youngstown, but you need to do more research on where we are today, otherwise you just have another puff piece of decay! The so called decent park, as you call it, is the second largest inner city park in the country, second only to Central Park in New York. It has two professional public golf courses designed by Donald Ross. Also to be found is a world class art Museum, and a downtown area that is growing a lot faster than you indicate! Just to the west of us in the suburb's is one of the largest county fairs in the country, And a higher % of professional sports legends and coaches than most major cities! Youngstown and the surrounding area also has a rich history in some of the best musicians around and The Warner Brothers are from Youngstown. I could go on but instead will offer this challenge: Come to Youngstown and look me up, I will show you why Youngstown is not a forgotten place! Bill Scheetz

@@forgottenplaces9780 if you hang out in the areas that have fallen and haven't started reviving, sure. I own rental properties geared toward professional people working in and around Youngstown. With every property I list for rent, I easily get 20+ applications from professional people who make excellent incomes who could live anywhere in the Valley and choose to live in Youngstown proper, and are willing to pay rents comparable (or higher) than they would pay in Canfield or Cortland. I wish I had 10 more properties, because I could rent them all out in a couple weeks with solid tenants. Is this phenom all over Youngstown? Of course not. But we definitely have become appealing to the 30-45 yr old age group who are well educated and professional. Also, people are moving here from CA and NY to retire because of the lower cost of living, and people who can now work remotely are starting to move from bigger cities to Youngstown - one of my renters just moved cross country from Arizona to live here, and the company they work for is not in Ytown. I have another moving from Baltimore to Ytown, who is also a remote worker in March. Unfortunately, despite my high rents and in demand professional rental properties, I've had a difficult time finding an investor to help me transform the street I'm buying. NOT because I don't have the proof that the concept is viable, but because too many of them only see what you see. Perhaps there's something going on here that you don't see with just a visit, or if you still see Youngstown as a defeated rustbelt city. Fortunately, there are a lot of people who see it othewise.

I live here. The city really doesn't have a lot going for it in terms of draw. People say Downtown is nice but it doesnt have anything any other city doesnt have. Nothing really unique down there. Good italian food, of course. The draw to the city is Mill Creek Park, which was glossed over but I think holds up as one of the better Parks in america. It has a wide range of different activities and landscapes.

I live here in youngstown and it's not that bad if you're familiar with the area and people in the city but if someone is new to the area or doesn't know much about youngstown it would be hard to live here

The city center still is! Our works department puts a lot of pride into making sure the university and downtown is well taken care of. With companies like YNDC (Youngstown development corp) either tearing down homes which cannot be saved or renovating homes with good quality craftsmanship and materials will sell them back at reasonable prices and work with the economically disadvantaged. There’s a lot of rust on this city, but a lot of us are willing to put in the work to make it shine again.

There is alot more history that could have been added to this video. The mob, the corruption, the embezzlement, being named murder capital of the year one year. The drug crisis, the crime rate etc. The only good thing left here is the food.

Easy question. Youngstown Sheet and Tube, US Steel, and Republic all closed with a loss of 40,000 steel jobs. Then truck industry, Rail Road, W,B Pollock, restaurants, bars and gas stations went away. I lived there and was employed by YS&T. I saw this coming and left a year before 19 September 1977. I went back into the Army and never looked back. I miss the Y=Town of my youth, 40s,50s, and 60s,
