Outsiders always talking negative about Youngstown. Haha you thought it was like Kensington in Philly. Don't believe the hype. Da Yo is clean and quiet place to live if you doing the right thing. You mad because you didn't see blight. Pick another city to clown. You clown. Fun Fact it's still Covid. People are home. Not outside so you can gawk at them.

Grew up just north of Youngstown, both of my kids were born in YTown. It’s not so bad there, great cost of living, but all the manufacturing leaving really hurt the area. All the steel mills, Packard Electric, GM plant in Lordstown all gone. I’m in FL now, really miss the fall and all the festivals. The snow, I don’t miss that.

My cousin died from covid in Florida...he was 52 yrs old and couldn't breath and he called his living mother and said he didn't want to die alone....well, he did. Don't be foolish, if your one of those people that cannot live without being a social butterfly in society maybe getting vaccinated isn't a bad idea, it's not about you and your so called freedoms, its about everyone you come in contact with. Wow, that last president really has dumbed down alot of people.

I hear all kinds of depressing illustrations of Youngstown but the city is doing just fine. The African American and Hispanic communities produce some of most talented and hard working people in the country and are a source of pride in the city. Sure we have our crime like any other city but the good far outweighs the bad. Depressing empty streets? Go downtown on Saturday night and check that out. The YSU expansion, the Covelli Center, the Ampitheater, the Butler Art Gallery, the Youngstown Symphony, the Ballet Western Reserve have transformed Youngstown from a rust belt steel town into an art colony. We good. Thanks!

I'm originally from NJ, I being considered for a job in Youngstown. I've been to Youngstown before. It's not as half as bad as Newark. Living in Chicago most people don't realize the violence in Chicago is in specific neighborhoods on the South Side, Englewood or westside on Austin Ave. Chicago is the most segregated city in the U.S. blacks will live in one neighborhood, Mexicans in another, poles in another, Irish live in another. I also lived in KY. The people in the Midwest from Ohio to lowa are the most literate and most progressive. Youngstown is just another victim of failed politics.

Youngstown North side born and raised. I think even back in our heyday, we only had around 100,000ish...post WW2. Had buses, but no other mass transit. Had street cars earlier...but they were eliminated. We were considered the counterpart to Germany's "Ruhr Valley" along with Cleveland and Pittsburgh. We were on the hit list because of the steel mills during the war. And west of us by about 30 miles...is Ravenna...home of the Ravena Arsenal. It was built there because on average we are cloudy over 200 days/year...and if the Germans ever got over here...they wouldn't be able to see it 🤣😂 I-80...is a main artery through our area. There's tons of access for manufacturing alongside it. That " muffler car".....was @ the Famous Earl Scheib" any car painted $99 bucks" paint shop!🤣😂. Legendary on the northside🤣😂 We have our history...read about the " Youngstown tune-up"...the Jungle Inn, the " Bug" and the Naples, Carrabia, Strollo families ( la Familia) ...... Youngstown College coach Dwight Beede...birthed the penalty flag in football Navy( with Roger Staubach as quarterback) played Youngstown ( with future Eagle Ron Jaworski as quarterback).. here! In town ! Lots of history Yes...it's seen better days. I think it's down...but not " out"... How I judge a town? I look for construction cranes, bulldozers, ......big building projects. Tells me a lot about the economy there. Look at gasoline...another sign😉😉

Ohio is a midwest state. My block was mostly torn down. Lived next to Sam's corner-store. Streets were always kinda empty of traffic. We used to haul giant tires out of the tire dump and roll them down down the road. Poor people used to have excellent flower gardens. It ain't that the people just didn't care, but probably little invested in the poorer areas. Saw some of the poorest white folks I have ever seen. You drove past and all around the area you were looking for. La La Land is what everyone called it. The streets are all on a hill. Garland. Fruit. Loveless. Truesdale,etc. Between Wilson and Himrod. Up until the late 80s there was even a store at Garland and Shehy where they spoke Spanish. Also an MC club called Sons of Boriqua at Wilson and Shehy. It was predominantly Puerto Rican. A lot from NYC. You drove past my Grandparents old house on Euclid at 22:03. My Dad was raised there. I grew up on the Northside in the 70s. It was really nice then. I left 20 years ago

Almost had a wedding reception at the Boriqua club. La la land was…well oof. Literally. The ruling of that place was if you were white and female driving alone at night there, you could legally go through stop signs and red lights. Lot of bad stuff happened there. No one ever visited the east side, you only drove through to get somewhere else or you just never stopped. The police literally blocked that whole side of town once due to gang wars.

We used to have a ton of gang violence but have been highly on the mend in the last 20 years. My fiancée and I have stayed in the Hilton hotel in downtown Youngstown twice. Both times, we were awakened in the middle of the night by gunshots on the street below. And this is DOWNTOWN, not even the neighborhoods surrounding it where crime is even worse. And this wasn't "20 years ago", this was within the last 2 years or so when the pandemic restrictions started easing up. People who live in Youngstown tend to look at it through rose-colored glasses and will tell anyone not from there that "it's not that bad here, it's getting better", when in reality it's no better than Flint (other than the water) and only a slightly better place than East St. Louis. Hell, 95% of the "improvement projects" going on in the city right now solely benefit YSU, and most people who attend school there go there, get their degree, and then get the hell out of Youngstown literally the minute they graduate. They don't stay. I wonder why?

I've been coming to Youngstown most of my life to visit. Overall, the local culture is great and the people there are fairly polite and friendly. However, the actual city itself isn't much better than places like Flint or East St. Louis. Youngstown is a very impoverished and crime-ridden place, and it really isn't getting any better, whether people want to hear it or not.

@@terrimakley3366 I wasn't aware there was a roommate. The news never reported one. All the news had to say is that she had followed her boyfriend here to Youngstown to live w/him, I think. Idk, the more I think about it, it is possible they had mentioned a roommate & I just don't remember hearing that. I think if they can never prove what her cause of death is then they won't declare her death a murder, or a homicide so if that's true, no one will be charged w/her death. And to me, that's totally unacceptable. And it makes ya nervous knowing that there's a murderer out here walking free & moving among us totally unaware. That's so not cool. And it's not fair for Kricket either, she deserves justice as well as her family does. You're right, it is truly sad. 😢

You were on the North & East side of Ytown. The West side has alot of the violence & where you'll see more ppl out. The downtown area is hoppin' w/ alot ppl during work hours & that includes YSU campus. As far as you saying that the East side you were on being the Puerto Rican area your kinda right about that, back when I was using drugs my dealer lived there, he was Puerto Rican & Black mixed. As a matter of fact you drove right by his house! I hadn't been over on that side of town in almost 4yrs now. Also, when you started off the interstate area you were only about 2 miles away from my house. Loved seeing the area, thanx for doing it & posting it.

For many years the West Side was actually the safest part of Youngstown, and the one part of town that seemed to be an oasis from all the violent crime throughout the rest of the city. I have noticed the last few years or so that crime has been getting progressively worse over there, and even starting to spread out into Austintown. Even still, the south and east sides are still by far the most dangerous areas of the city. I certainly wouldn't leave my doors or my car unlocked on the West Side, but I don't fear for my safety when I'm over there.
@hardtymz2517

West side has “a lot” of violence? Maybe fight wise, but murders are definitely ALL East and south side. Those are the worst two. North side is weird. It’s fancy but yet a block over is shady as hell. It’s hard to figure out. Everyone also seems to forge get that the cops literally closed off most of the east side due to gang wars for weeks one time. No one ever visited the east side, you just drove through sometimes to go to a better area. Also lol at the “La La Land Rules” if you were an alone, white female driver at night. At least cops abided to that one. Saved countless lives.

Somebody told me that most of the streets in the Sharon Line neighborhood were actually "pre-built" in anticipation of growth of the steel industry, which obviously went to hell in the late 1970s. Consequently, you had empty streets where houses were never even built, and where they would NEVER be built. I read on WKBN a few years ago that the city actually permanently closed several of those streets and let nature take its course on them.
