I grew up with Splash Mountain but I'm truly excited for a change! Today's video is part of a series discussing Brer Rabbit, Song of the South, America Sings, Splash Mountain, and Tiana's Bayou Adventure. I think it's fun that one of Disney's most problematic properties will be replaced by something more timely and relevant. My goal will be to discuss the evolution of the attraction honestly and respectfully.
Of course, there is far more info than I could fit in one video. So below you'll discover some resources that might be valuable for anyone looking to research the topic further:
Disneyland removes controversial 'zip-a-dee-doo-dah' lyric from its parade

"In addition to its enduring incarnation as 'Turkey in the Straw,' 'Zip Coon,' or at least its nonsensical chorus -- 'O Zip a duden duden duden zip a duden day' -- also survives in 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,' from the soundtrack for Song of the South, Walt Disney's animated version of Joel Chandler Harris's 'Uncle Remus' tales."

I think I'm with Whoopi Goldberg on this one. She has advocated for "Song of the South" to be re-released from the vaults. Her view is that we should not hide or cover up history, but face it head on, warts and all. This way we can have an open and honest discussion. Does the Film have a problem with the depiction of races? Yes, but so does "Birth of a Nation" and it is still available for viewing.

The reason Tom Hank’s was singing zippy do da was Disney put out the Movie Splash Disneys Touchstone Pictures AND thus “SPLASH Mountain”’was the movie tie in with this movie Splash as Micheal Isner wanted the new ride to be named after the movie that was coming out..

I do quite enjoy the music of Song of the South and let's be honest Zip-a-dee-doo-dah is a timeless classic in the ranks of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Part of Your World just to name a few but for me the animation and cinematography of this movie are the real stand outs as well as Baskett's performance as acting against animated characters was really in its infancy at this stage.

I have a couple of records based on Song of the South, and they're favorites. At first I thought Zip-A -Dee-Doo-Dah was another kids' song. But what made me really and truly love that song more was knowing it was a Disney tune. And, WOW!! What a Whopper of a Disney song! I am very lucky and honored to say I have indeed seen the original Disney film Song of the South. I wanted to see that movie for years and years. And I am principally in love with Br'er Rabbit! I have a few plush toys of Disney's Br'er Rabbit, and they so cuddly and cute to snuggle with. Being a fan of Soul music, the songs and the movie were right up my alley. In fact, I have even imagined Br'er Rabbit as a Disco performer! There's an album I have (in translucent cherry-red vinyl) that I feel inside was performed by my favorite Soul Bunny! Two seven-minute long dance songs. "No-One Can Find Love" and "Mr. DJ, You Know How To Make Me Dance". And a 16-minute long "Disco Concerto". What's more, one of the tunes in the platinum Disney album "Mickey Mouse Disco " is Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah!!

For many years this song competed with When You Wish Upon a Star for the title Disney's Signature Song. In fact, I thought Zip-a-dee-doo-dah was the official Disney theme song!

But if you got time, Six Flags Auto World that was in Flint Michigan is a really interesting one. Only lasted like a year or something like that maybe less. Complete disaster. I went when i was a kid, i live in the Flint area. But that could make for a good video i bet

Oh ignorance abounds. The movie was made to provide lead roles for black actors/actresses - because Disney saw that Hollywood was not offering roles to blacks. Was it a perfect effort NO but the intention was not racist. Bassett was the first to win an honorary Oscar for the role. The first black actor to earn an academy award because Hollywood was racist. Now as far as the "accents" - um have you seen Roots - is that a racist movie because the actors are using black vernacular of the times? The stories of Brer rabbit were the stories of enslaved people brought from Africa - and now erased from history by political correctness and the woke mob. Even staff from the Uncle Remus museum near Atlanta didn't want the attraction removed because it kept the stories alive. But as usual...liberal woke cry bullies had it erased from history. And besides Tiana is yet another girl focused attraction, based on a sub-par movie and plot - all for political correctness. There is nothing wrong with SOS (though I agree its not the greatest movie) but the music is GREAT and the attraction was perfection. But as usual the current Disney has to destroy rather than create. Bob Iger et al have absolutely RUINED the Disney company - but that was the plan wasn't it.

To be clear, this video was about the Music of Song of The South. I do have other videos that focus more on the book, another on the animation, and another focusing on the acting. Like most things the truth on this film falls somewhere in between. Ironically, I haven’t experienced any negative commentary (as of yet) from the positive things I’ve discussed about SOTS. I also can’t find all that much truth from the woke commentary since the complaints about this film started since its original release. Heck, having the premiere in Georgia meant the star couldn’t even attend because of segregation. Also worth noting that it never saw home release which spans several decades before the current woke obsession. My personal opinion is that it’s worth being objective on sensitive issues. Sensitive in the sense that there are those who want it locked away, and on the other side there are those who can’t address any criticism of the film. Fortunately, I think most people are willing to interact with the good and bad in order to better understand SOTS. Thats what inspired my interest anyways. That said, I would have a hard time saying SOTS is better than Princess and the Frog. Perhaps if Disney had the $$$ to may a full-length animated film about Br’er Rabbit it would be a different story. As is, the best part of SOTS makes up 25min of animation (which contains the 3 best/most memorable songs). PATF is animated throughout and has some of the best traditional animation from the studio. I would say the music is phenomenal throughout as well, but it’s Randy Newman so I assume that’s understood. I think critically PATF received better reviews but I’d need to double check to see if my memory is correct.

Also, to be clear the movie was made because Walt was a huge fan of the Brer Rabbit stories. I haven’t come across anything suggesting that it was made in order provide roles for black actors but hopefully it was a nice bonus for the company. Actress Hattie McDaniel was a huge score coming off Gone with the Wind and her recent Oscar win. Worth noting is that Hattie was actually the first black actor to win an Oscar. I think the anecdote about Baskett’s Oscar get repeated so often, people forget that Hattie was first (which is a shame). I’m not to sure about the relevance of the dialect comment as it’s not something discussed in the video, but I will add the SOTS/Roots question to my notes.
@eighties73

I agree with most of this and your sentiments but one small correction, Hattie McDaniel was the first black actor to win an Academy Award for her role in Gone with the Wind. Yes, James Baskett was the first black male to win one for his role of Uncle Remus. I will also agree with @retrospectrum, I've not heard the movie was created to provide roles for black actors. Is there a source for that? I'd be interested in reading it.

I dont think song is bad. I love the song. N fact all the music from the movie is good. But Disney is trying to get rid of their ties with this movie. I saw this movie one time once and I didn't think nothing of it. But maybe now yes. But music of Splash will be missed. And I hate Tiana is now caught up smh. N I wish they gave her a ride like Snow bc I always hated the drops in Splash. So when Tiana rides officially open I am going to ride it maybe once or twice but that's it bc I can't do the drops. N i hope the gift store have items with her face on it not just animals smh.. #DisneyDiva

The first minute of this video has me questioning my reality. I distinctly remember knowing the song in the eighties when I was a kid. But if the movie wasn’t released on VHS in the USA (where I lived), and that singalong tape wasn’t released until 1993 (I looked it up), where did I hear it? I have a vague memory of watching the movie at a friend’s house on a VCR. My best guess is that it was a recording of a TV broadcast, as some Internet sources suggest the movie still aired on TV into the 80s.

Splash Mountain actually is better suited for "Frog Princess," because of a key scene set on the bayou, but poor old "Song of the South" does not deserve total oblivion. Its supposed offenses are more naive than deliberately hateful. It's also the first occasion for a Black man to win an Oscar for playing a man who's smarter than all the white people put together. It's also got some of the best character animation Disney ever did (written properly, Br'er Rabbit would have given Bugs Bunny a run for his carrots). But it's more fun to be offended by a relic of the past than to look at it objectively.
