Introverts can be happy for a long time alone with their favorite (in)activities like books, games etc. While extroverts need to have social interactions regularly to not be depressed and bored. Introverts need to adapt to the social norm and interact with others, that is why they build a mechanism of "social battery" so that they won't get overwhelmed by social stress. Going for groceries, meeting clients, going to parties all depletes this battery and the way to recharge it is to be alone, doing what the introvert love most, like playing games, watching movies/series, reading books/novels. Some introverts are actually successful movie stars or musical stars that handles social conducts masterfully and can command the entire stage at a drop of the hat, but they will need their "alone time" to recharge their batteries or they might simply delete themselves because of the stress.

I used to travel a ton for work, and after a long week of work, me and the two other person I travel with would often have to rock paper scissors to see who has to sit with the cab/Uber/shuttle driver on the way to the airport. We often work in remote areas, so it was a good thirty-forty minute drive to the airport, and I was always glad when I didn’t have to make small talk.

It is not that introverts cannot communicate or make small talk: It is that they have a finite "communication" meter and doing so drains them of this finite resource. Once emptied it can only be recharged by hiding themselves away and not talking to people.
