Feels very classically Melvins that the response to the audience rebelling against the music wasn't adjustment or indifference, but just laying instruments against the speakers and giving the audience pure feedback instead. "You like that, assholes?"

I was at the Dallas show. It was very cold that day and we had waited several hours outside because we had GA tickets and wanted to be close to the stage. I feel like maybe the venue staff were being jerks, or the show started a little late, or we were let in late or something weird, I don’t remember exactly but yes everyone was kind of riled up. I remember people starting fires outside before the show trying to stay warm. But yeah I remember people tearing up the floor and throwing it at you guys. I was shocked and pissed off because I was enjoying the show & realized that they were putting the band in a lot of danger and it bothered me how so many people were ok with putting you guys in harms way and going along with it. That was not cool at all. I’m glad everyone was ok. I feel like I remember seeing one of the band members get hit in the head but you said you got hit in the chest so maybe that’s what I remembered. But yeah, not cool. You guys are great. I feel like I had seen you a few months before with White Zombie so I was looking forward to seeing you guys again. I do remember someone coming on stage saying NIN wasn’t going to play if anyone else threw anything on stage but I had forgotten that was Trent himself! I’m glad he did that. Anyway you guys are great. I always enjoyed seeing you guys.

Thanks for sharing that. Sometimes there was a weird psychic energy floating around some of those things in the 90's and that show is a perfect example. Great to hear an audience perspective as things could get surreal at times.
@nancycraig3984
@nancycraig3984 5 ай бұрын
@@MarkDeutrom that’s absolutely true about shows sometimes. I imagine what the audience is feeling is felt stronger by the band. Surreal is definitely a good way to describe it when the vibes go high like that good or bad. Just so you know, I think people were already being jerks and angry way before you guys went on. It just sucks it went down that way.

Once enough time goes by it gets filed under "legendary" but an unruly crowd is unpredictable and rapidly gets into a mob mentality. You also notice more if you're completely sober !

I was at the Dallas show!!! I remember them throwing the floor pieces, but don't remember the noise song you guys played. Didn't NIN come out to like a droning loud noise then rip into Wish. Another thing about the flooring, they put boards down after that incident and at a Pantera show a few months later were picking the boards up and someone else would surf on it while it was being hoisted up. Damn, so wild, now ppl just start at they phones lol

@@MarkDeutrom I went to the WZ meet & greet 'after' that Dallas show, we were more interested in talking to Sean & J. I have the backstage pass still, so it was funny to hear the story about that. Saw you several times w/ the Melvins then and met you at the L7/Wool show at Deep Ellum Live. Everyone was beyond cool, like you guys, Pete signed my vinyl copy of Box Set and L7 took us on their bus to hang out, magical magical times ANYWAY thank you for doing all this content! @@dezoetebiet2997 This is what is so great about that era of the Melvins, they literally played EVERY TYPE OF SHOW POSSIBLE. Opening for bands that had crowds that HATED them, opening for crowds that loved them, in-stores where almost no one showed, PACKED in-stores (I have fond memories of a GREAT in-store the band played at a small store called Dingleberries in Dayton ,Ohio before opening for White Zombie at Dayton's Hara Arena later that night. I was struck by how different those 2 sets were, maybe with a feeling that most bands would just play the same set. So... I found out you could see the Melvins twice in the same night and each show was going to be completely different. That in-store was in a very small store, yet packed. I don't know if too many people "got" the Melvins at the time, but for decades after that whenever I had a Melvins shirt on around town, people would mention that they came to that instore and became fans later. People STILL talk about it! Great memories!

Hi Mark! I was at the Sioux Falls show. As your story goes, nothing really unusual happened on stage, but I do remember you guys coming out and playing relentlessly slow, which seemed like a conscious choice to rile up the crowd of midwestern NIN dorks, and a fine choice it was! Personally, I had a passing interest in NIN by this point and zero interest in watching a bunch of acrobats hang themselves on hooks, so I’m glad the Melvins were there. It made the evening worth leaving the house for. 😅

This tour was my first time seeing the Melvins having been a fan for a few years. It was in Topeka KS and I remember the crowd being into you guys. I was over the moon because we thought we were seeing Pop Will Eat Itself ( the band you filled for) so I remember walking into the place and seeing Melvins merch. My young dumb ass asked a random security guard "Are the Melvins playing tonight!?!?" and he just looks at the merch and says something like "Looks like it." and walked away. We came up to you guys after the show and you were loading your van I think but we came up and asked if you were going to play Lawrence and Buzz was pretty short with us and said "yeah we usually play there.". Even at 18 we could tell you guys were beat and weren't in the mood to be punished by 3 18 year old music geeks. Anyway I love the stories and the channel! It's great and I hope you're well.

I remember hearing about the infamous Dallas NIN show. I was just getting into the Melvins at the time and really wanted to go but had to work. Anyway, some friends of mine went to that gig and said the crowd was unruly from the get-go and were being gigantic pricks, tearing the floor up and throwing it onstage. The fact that the Melvins handled it accordingly and with such poise by running feedback through the amps and Dale smashing his gong, etc. only made me love them even more. King Buzzo also taunted the crowd, which only made them even more irate. 😂 There’s a live recording of it somewhere, I think on one of the Am-Rep singles if I’m not mistaken. Dallas kinda has a reputation for that behavior, it seems. I remember seeing the Jesus Lizard as well as Primus around the same time there (mid 90s), and there sadly wasn’t a shortage of imbeciles throwing crap onstage. Anyway, I love this era of the Melvins. Stoner Witch and Stag are legendary. Great stuff, Mark!

Yes I think there is a side called Dallas on the singles of the month club from the next year. There's also one called Jacksonville but that was from either a Helmet or L7 tour. There's no pleasing an unruly crowd, but there's always more of them then there is of you ! I've seen a few rough ones at this point. I think the younger generations are more mellow.
