Do Mormons believe in heaven and hell? The short answer is yes. Mormons-properly referred to as Latter-day Saints or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-base their understanding of heaven and hell on teachings from the scriptures and from modern prophets of God. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul taught that all people will be resurrected after death, meaning the spirit and body will be reunited. Each resurrected person will be assigned to one of three kingdoms of glory, comparable to the sun, moon, and stars. People will attain a level of glory based on their actions during their life on earth. The highest degree of glory, symbolized by the sun, is the place where God the Father and Jesus Christ live. This state of being is sometimes referred to as exaltation.
For members of the Church, “hell” does not necessarily mean a place of punishment; it can refer to two different places. One is spirit prison-the temporary waiting place for people who disobeyed God’s commandments in life or who died without a knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ. People in spirit prison have the opportunity to repent and accept or reject the gospel. Depending on their choices, most people will eventually receive one of the degrees of glory. The other place that “hell” can refer to is called “outer darkness,” which is not a kingdom of glory. It is where Satan lives, and it is reserved for only the most wicked people who deny Jesus Christ.
It is comforting to remember that Jesus Christ will judge all people according to their own actions, desires, and understanding and that He is both just and merciful.

This is such an important key to why members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are so in touch with the faith. Many faiths focus on either Heaven or Hell and use the fear of Hell to try to drive their members into Heaven (like cattle). This fear based motivation provides employment for the speakers, but isn’t the most effective method for member’s faithfulness (because it’s extrinsic - fear fades and must be repeated). As a result of only 2 choices (Heaven or Hell), many people vacillate on the line - they try to be just good enough to get into Heaven, while being just bad enough to have a little fun! With the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the focus is not to scare people with Hell. The motivation is to be with God and the Savior, and is based on the best intrinsic motivation - love. And this is how the Savior himself described it when he spoke about the good Shepherd and leading his sheep. That’s why we take our faith so seriously - our focus is on love, following in the Savior’s footsteps and returning with honor.

@@churchofjesuschrist So basically, Jehova will beat and beat and beat on you until you either do as he says or you will be tortured forever, rather than destroyed. If he is All Good, and All powerful, he is not all knowing, or he would have better ideas about how this life and the next should operate. If he is All Knowing and All Good, then he is not All Powerful If he is All Powerful, and All Knowing, he is evil. These are not debatable, on a contingency of logic. They are mutually exclusive attributes, given his own claims about his plan and nature. If he is so smart, he should know, he will only ever make me evil this way. I am incapable of being broken. I say this,, having been through more suffering than any human ever known. Damaging me only guarantees I hate him more. I refuse to believe it is the fallen who do these things to us. Jehova is the Satan. The "fallen" (who are not even creations of his. They are their own Gods) are the Edward Snowdens and they've been "demonized" for trying to help. This clearly explains that yes, we do believe in grace from Christ's atonement and also want to do our best bu living how Christ lived. My great grandparents were in the missionary ministry for the Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ. My mother and her sisters and brothers were taken to church every Sunday along with their devout mother and father, my grandparents. One thing which stands out in my mind concerning the Latter Day Saints is that they teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a most perfect way; therefore, He remains in our hearts as our Savior. Also some years ago, they produced an ad for television stating: "Families who pray together, stay together.". So true!

I have never seen any other Christian church explain this scripture about celestial, terrestrial and telestial bodies during the resurrection. It amazes me to see how Joseph Smith interpreted so many important scriptures that, somehow, have been ignored by most Christian churches. Another example is the baptism for the dead quoted by Apostle Paul. If anybody choses to disbelieve in Joseph Smith as a prophet, then should give reasonable explanations on these scriptures which have so far, in my opinion, only been explained by this Church.

The word telestial does not appear in the bible. Celestial and terrestrial as far as I know are Greek words mean "Heavenly" and " Earthly". Paul seems to be talking about 2 types of bodies hence In verse 40 he writes: "So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption". Which you could say that earthy bodies can die and be corrupted but heavenly bodies will be incorruptable. He does mention 3 examples the Sun Moon and stars which could be interpreted as three separate bodies however all of the preceding and proceeding scriptures In my opinion don't seem to point that way. As far as the baptism for the dead scripture I have heard other ministers say it was a heretical practice by some and Paul was just stating it to prove the resurection. However Paul doesn't condem it and it would seem odd he would use a heretical practice to support his doctrine. However no where else in the cannonical bible that we use is there any explicit mention of doing work for the dead. Sorry just my random musings.

@@BHansMusic As far as the 3 degrees of glory are connected to the types of bodies who might inherit those glories I think there may be some misunderstanding. Obviously there are only two types of bodies, either corruptible or incorruptible, Heavenly or Earthly. If you look at the passage carefully it says that there are two types of bodies but that there are three different glories to which those bodies can be resurrected to, represented but the sun, moon, and stars in relation to the magnitude and grandeur of those respective glories. so we can't say the bodies are only mentioned as having two options so the glories also only have two options, because the scripture differentiates them from one another. There is also an inkling of the Baptisms for the dead or at least proxy work doctrine in Hebrews 11:40, where we are taught that God provided opportunities and practice for some so that others who didn't have those opportunities and practices in their lifetime, but now, while in the spirit receive a good report, can also be made perfect through those who had those blessings in their lifetime. We might also notice that 1 Corinthians 15:30 mentions our (those who have the sealing power) salvation standing in jeopardy if we don't do the work, and then in Hebrews we find out why... It's because the Lord has blessed us with the sealing power during our lifetime through the same process it was delivered anciently, and therefore we also have the responsibility to use that sealing power, not only to seal ourselves with God, but to also participate in proxy work to offer those same sealing opportunities to those who didn't have that option during their lifetimes. Hence the need for genealogy work to find out who those individuals are that still need that opportunity made available to them through our efforts.

He rose from the grave to “become the firstfruits of them that slept” (1 Corinthians 15:20). As Risen Lord, He visited among those He had loved in life. He also ministered among His “other sheep” (John 10:16) in ancient America. In the modern world, He and His Father appeared to the boy Joseph Smith, ushering in the long-promised “dispensation of the fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10). Of the Living Christ, the Prophet Joseph wrote: “His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah, saying: “I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father” (D&C 110:3-4). Of Him the Prophet also declared: “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives! “For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father- “That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (D&C 76:22-24). We declare in words of solemnity that His priesthood and His Church have been restored upon the earth-“built upon the foundation of … apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:20). We testify that He will someday return to earth. “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5). He will rule as King of Kings and reign as Lord of Lords, and every knee shall bend and every tongue shall speak in worship before Him. Each of us will stand to be judged of Him according to our works and the desires of our hearts. We bear testimony, as His duly ordained Apostles-that Jesus is the Living Christ, the immortal Son of God. He is the great King Immanuel, who stands today on the right hand of His Father. He is the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come. God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son.

I'm agnostic but I fail to see how this is any worse than other religions' afterlife. In fact, I really like the LDS Church's ideals. So much better than the black/white heaven and hell presented by Christianity or the "nothing happens it's all meaningless" message of atheism.

When you meet members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, feel free to ask them why we believe what we do; even when we have difficulty expressing it, you will probably find that we have very good reason for our faith.

The Celestral degree of glory or living the Celestral law is what most Mormons try to do in their lives. You see that most of them try to live christ like when thinking about things and how they make choices and choose to do most things because of their Heavenly Father being in thought of as they create these choices by what they choose to identify. Being apart of the church I can personally tell you that I feel things that are not of this world but of the next because I live my life by the Celestral Law. The Celestral Law is what most LDS people do in most of their actions and they show alot of love and happiness towards other people. In my daily actions I show on average about 70 people gratitude because I want them to feel like there is someone that deeply cares about them and that they are a great value to me and to the happiness they feel.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I completely agree with that scripture. It's truly by grace that we are saved. We have to access that grace through our faith, which is done through showing our love for God and those around us. God won't save those who don't love him in his kingdom. Our good works are a natural result of that love for God and our brothers and sisters. If we show love for him by following in his footsteps and blessing our brothers and sisters, including Temple work, and sharing our love for God, we will be with him in the celestial kingdom!

He didn't mean in the presence of God the Father because that's not where the Father resides. Spirit world consists of two places prison/hell or paradise. This is where spirits wait for their resurrection. The 1st resurrection is for the spirits worthy to live during the millenium and the 2nd resurrection is right before judgment after the millennium and is sometimes called the resurrection of the damned.

This passage explains where Jesus went for the 3 days after His death but before His resurrection. this, together with Luke 23:43 which discusses Christ going with the thief to paradise, clearly shows that there is a spirit realm where both righteous and unrighteous spirits exist in a sort of limbo until they have repented and accepted Christ fully and can be resurrected or they have rejected Christ fully and await the day of their resurrection to damnation. they may be dead or asleep as to their mortal bodies, but they are very much so alive as spirits in that spirit realm.

At 5:27 the strangest thing is said. It's talking about how the outer darkness is the absolute worst place, without any light, and that's where Satan lives. Those who understand and believe in the truth, but reflect it, will go to the outer darkness. Then it says that the outer darkness is reserved for the most evil of all people. So, isn't this basically saying that if you understand and believe in Mormonism and then reject it, you are the most evil people and you will spend eternity in the outer darkness? How is that not "the fear of hell?"

Not even the prophets, because even they were still imperfect and fallible since they were human. The only way you would have a perfect understanding is if you had a perfected body with a perfected brain that can perfectly discern between truth and error, while also having a perfect memory of everything, of all truth, and of all things, and let’s say, you still choose to reject the truth after all of that, then yeah, you would be cast out to outer darkness as a result, but I don’t think anybody will ever fit that description.

It's pretty much impossible to go to outer darkness. Even murderers go to heaven (the telestial kingdom). If someone leaves the church but doesn't commit serious sin like killing somebody, they may still go to the lower level of the celestial kingdom, or maybe the terrestrial kingdom. Or they might even go to the highest level of the celestial kingdom if they choose to repent and follow Jesus by making covenant promises with Him. Even after we die we still have the opportunity to turn to Him and repent. That's why we do baptisms for the dead - so they can still repent and go to the Celestial kingdom if they choose to

That doctrine of the church is the same lie the serpent told. Ye can be as God is a lie. We are not Gods. We are not saved by actions that nullify the Gospel. We are saved by Grace through faith. @@WarandFlame Did you watch the video? We believe in the Bible AS FAR AS ITS TRANSLATED CORRECTLY and unfortunately there are some principles missing and lost by the wickedness of men. The Joseph Smith Translations of parts of the Bible fill in the gaps and inconsistencies, because they are straight from God. We also believe in the Book of Mormon, a historical account of a family that traveled to ancient America to avoid the persecution and destruction of Jerusalem in 600 AD. You'll find that when Jesus Christ told His disciples "And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd " (John 10:16). He was talking about the people in Ancient America so after His resurrection he visited the Nephites and taught them His gospel and appointed apostles there as well. The Book of Mormon was not corrupted over time by wicked men and it verifies the truths taught in the Bible. I highly suggest you should read it and pray to God, asking for a verification of your own the truths it will show you. It also tells of many prophets and wars and helps us to see the same things happening in the World today, from the Gadianton Robbers to false prophets. It also gives you a deeper understanding and appreciation of Jesus Christ because it mentions Him in every chapter, nearly every verse, only not mentioning Him in 2 heavy War chapters.

@@WarandFlame Also The Fall was necessary to advance the human race and so that we could have trials and be tempted. Eve knew this and she knew what she was doing when she partook of the fruit. While Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden they were trapped in an endless state of ignorance. We had to begin with a knowledge of right and wrong and there was no way to do that in the Garden. Also yes there was a premortal life where Adam (his original name is actually Michael) was chosen to be the first man on Earth and he actually helped design the construction of the Universe. If there was no Premortal Life than there wouldn't be an explanation of God, the Afterlife, or the Bible at all. Lucifer wouldn't be allowed to exist and Jesus Christ wouldn't be our Savior. These imperative decisions wouldn't have been made. If the Fall didn't happen we wouldn't be on the Earth and it would still just be Adam and Eve living in a constant state of ignorance.

So does that mean people who once believed in Jesus, but no longer do, are considered the most evil people regardless of who they actually are as a person, even if they did no wrong-doings at all? We believe that it is God's "work and glory to bring to pass the immortality and eteranal life of man" (Moses 1:39). What that means, is that he wants us to become like him, we have even been commanded to be like him. We believe that we exisited with God before this life as spirit beings, and the purpose of this life was to obtain a physical body, go through mortal experiences, learn and progress to someday be like Him. God cannot be replaced by us, but we can become like him, similar to how a child grows to become like his father. The father does not cease to exist once the child grows to adulthood, and the father's greatest desire is to see his children succeed. Our goal is not just to return to God, as we have already lived with him, but to be like him in every way. I hope this helps to answer your question.

I think people who say that are mostly just guessing or speculating on what it means to become like God or to live with God in the celestial kingdom. But what we do know is like what you said there is only one God - Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, three separate beings that make up the Godhead. Over and over in the Bible and Book of Mormon it says how they are one. Jesus Christ is one with the Father. And we can become one with Jesus Christ if we follow Him and basically we can become one family of God which is what I think the celestial kingdom is all about - eternal family.

Great questions. As far as members claiming doctrine about creating planets, that's really deep and more speculation than anything else haha, there's no specific doctrine on that. We might get that from a talk Spencer W. Kimball once gave about possibilities of the Celestial Kingdom: www.lds.org/study/new-era/1981/09/president-kimball-speaks-out-on-planning-your-life?lang=eng But we do believe you can become like God someday, and we know God created our planet, so hence, members might make doctrinal claims that we will create planets someday, if so awesome, if not, then awesome. And more than one God, we believe in the God-head but as far as details about other gods we only have some accounts of Joseph Smith where he says: "Hence, the doctrine of a plurality of Gods is as prominent in the Bible as any other doctrine. It is all over the face of the Bible . . . Paul says there are Gods many and Lords many . . . but to us there is but one God--that is pertaining to us; and he is in all and through all," (History of the Church, vol. 6, p. 474). "In the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods; and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and people it," (Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 5). I hope I could answer some questions! Let me know if you have anymore questions, best of luck!

tjlaviolette there is never an issue with asking questions! Bear in mind that I’m a 15 year old member so I’ll do my best to explain the best I can, so those who make it to the celestial kingdom dwell with Heavenly Father Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost. It is also taught that we can grow to be like Heavenly Father, this is why we feel families are so important as you (along with your partner) can become like our heavenly parents and have children of our own to send to a place to be able to come back and have eternal life. So, presumably, yes that would include having a planet, but the main focus is in being like god x

The wonderful part is: we get to self-filter. D&C 88 suggests that we can choose to obey Gods laws and commandments. And we will receive a degree of glory consistent with the law that we can abide. If then, we can abide a higher law, we can be recipients of the highest degree of glory. Those who cannot abide a higher law (or law at all) will receive a commensurate glory (or no kingdom of glory). Christ invites and encourages all to come to Him and obey His laws. And He has given us the power to choose for ourselves. Absolutely beautiful.

@@ryaneld796 I can inform you about a number of things here. I've long been familiar with Revelation 22:18-19. I've helped many people to understand it, and I'll be happy to help you also. The book of Revelation was written by John, the apostle, while banished to the Isle of Patmos, in the later part of the first century AD. At the time, prophetic writings were separate. The Bible was compiled by scholars several centuries later, and anyone who read Revelation in the meanwhile would have seen clearly that John was referring, in the passage you cited, to his own book: the book we call Revelation. Moses actually said the same thing as he was finishing his own writings, way back in Deuteronomy 4:2 and 12:32. Of course, it would be silly to reject everything that follows Deuteronomy. In the New Testament we read about a number of prophets who followed Christ. Joseph Smith was not the only witness to the gold plates; a group of three and another group of eight recorded their testimonies of seeing and holding them. There's not much use in arguing "faith vs. works" when Christ and other prophets spoke of the importance of both. Incidentally, most people in the world refer back to great prophets who had more than one wife; for example, the prophet Jacob, who became Israel, had children from two wives and two handmaidens--that's where the twelve tribes of Israel come from. May I ask you about your faith? What is the foundation of your faith? You evidently rely on the Bible; I know why I believe the Bible contains God's word, but why do you?

Only those who accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ whether it be in this life or in the Spirit World and that have been sealed by God's power (the priesthood) can be together forever in God's presence. Such sealing of families is done in the Temples by the priesthood. After baptism, there are other ordinances essential for exaltation. In the Temples, those who are dead can have their work done by proxy, therefore, a living person may be baptized for that deceased individual cannot do it for lack of a body. Doctrine and Covenants 132:19 - 25 19 And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, and it is sealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of promise, by him who is anointed, unto whom I have appointed this power and the keys of this priesthood; and it shall be said unto them-Ye shall come forth in the first resurrection; and if it be after the first resurrection, in the next resurrection; and shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depths-then shall it be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, that he shall commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, and if ye abide in my covenant, and commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world; and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever. 20 Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them. 21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye abide my law ye cannot attain to this glory. 22 For strait is the gate, and narrow the way that leadeth unto the exaltation and continuation of the lives, and few there be that find it, because ye receive me not in the world neither do ye know me. 23 But if ye receive me in the world, then shall ye know me, and shall receive your exaltation; that where I am ye shall be also. 24 This is eternal lives-to know the only wise and true God, and Jesus Christ, whom he hath sent. I am he. Receive ye, therefore, my law. 25 Broad is the gate, and wide the way that leadeth to the deaths; and many there are that go in thereat, because they receive me not, neither do they abide in my law. If you have any other questions please let me know.

@JayWithTheRedBeard, thank you for your comments and your question. The opportunity to dwell in the highest degree of glory extends to every child of God, everyone can participate in the ordinances that allow us to enter the highest degree of glory (baptism, confirmation, ordination to the Priesthood, and Temple ordinances) but these alone do not enable us to dwell with God, but rather the fulfillment and observance of the acquired covenants. If we are sealed in the Temple but do no honor our calling (keep and observe the covenants) we will not be able to dwell in the highest degree of glory, within the Celestial glory. D&C 131: 1-4. As a 54 year veteran Protestant, I would have to agree with this. ultimately it doesn't matter to your salvation, especially when you should be serving the Lord anyway with all of your heart- this would just follow that those who truly put their entire hearts towards the Lord will recieve the blessings of the brother of the Prodigal Son (for reference), where the Prodigal son spent his inheritence upon the earth. The other brother stayed faithful and true, and although he didn't get the welcome back from death and hell party- he was set to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. There's yet another example of at least two different areas of Heaven.

Before Christ would heal someone in the old testament, he would ask someone if they believed. Some would say yes, and if they said yes then that meant that they had been trying to live what they knew at that time Christ wanted them to do. they had to work at it. it is the same for someone who trains to be a baker or runner. you have to work at it for several months/ years to get be good at it but when you work at it and ask for his help and thank him for his help whether you see it or not. then will it get even better. Grace means divine help or means. Your parent's if they were wise didn't give you a car at age 16. you would have to show that you cared for your stuff and that you were honest, and trustworthy. you had to work for those things. Jesus hopes we will live his gospel to the best of our ability, then with his grace he will make up for the rest. At our work, In an ideal situation for us to move we would have to work to be able to move to a supervisory position. in the bible the lepers were told to go wash somewhere so many times to be cleansed, did they say I will wait here bring the water to me? no, for that blessing to work it required them to have faith or belief in Christ and also to go walking to that water, and wash themselves. God knew there would translation problems when the bible was translated in english. So He provided the Book of Mormon which is another testament of Jesus Christ. It recounts the people who knew about Jesus, and waited for the time he would be born and later his visit to them in the Americas. I believe what I share to be true. This is a total misunderstanding of Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 15. He is in no way suggesting there are three levels of heaven/glory that people can get to after they die based off how they lived. He is simply explaining that each body has it’s own glory and that our resurrected bodies will have a different kind of glory than our current bodies now have. The Bible is clear that all who do not believe in Jesus will be sentenced to hell. It also does not distinguish between eternal life and immortality.

The Mormon religion is very unique in many of its doctrine. While technically a Protestant faith, the Mormons generally share more doctrine with the Catholics. One of the greatest differences between the Mormon faith, the Catholic faith, and general Protestant faiths, is the view of the afterlife. Catholic belief holds that a soul goes either to Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory. From Purgatory a soul can move closer to Heaven through masses for the dead performed on Earth and various other acts of the living. The general Protestant view of the afterlife holds that only two options exist: Heaven and Hell. The Mormon view of the afterlife is more multi-layered. 1 Corinthians 15:40-41 states that “There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the starts: for one start differeth from another star in glory.” Mormon history teaches that Joseph Smith was divinely instructed that this passage referred to the “levels” of “heaven.” (A telestial glory is also mentioned in the Joseph Smith translation of this passage.) There are three kingdoms of heaven: the celestial kingdom, the telestial kingdom, and the terrestrial kingdom. Celestial glory comes to those who received the testimony of Jesus, believed on his name, and were baptized, who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true (Doctrine and Covenants 76: 51-53). The Terrestrial glory is for those who lived honorable lives on the earth but "were blinded by the craftiness of men" and were "not valiant in the testimony of Jesus." Those who did not receive a testimony of Jesus while on earth, but who could have done so except for their neglect, are also heirs to the Terrestrial Kingdom. The Telestial glory embraces those who on earth willfully reject the gospel of Jesus Christ, and commit serious sins such as murder, adultery, lying, and who do not repent in mortality. There is a fourth place where souls can go after death - Outer Darkness. This place is only those who deny the Holy Ghost, have a perfect testimony of the Gospel and willfully deny it. The Mormon view of afterlife is discussed at great length in Doctrine and Covenants chapter 76. These are just a few of the beliefs of the Mormon faith. Evidenced by the discussion of these is the fact that while Mormonism is technically a Protestant faith, it shares many doctrinal points with both Protestants and Catholics. Beyond its shared theology, Mormonism has several very unique teachings, ones generally not expounded by any other Christian faith. Perhaps it is these novel pieces of doctrine that appeal to people and have made Mormonism the fastest growing faith in the world today.

To be accurate, the Church of Jesus Christ stands apart from both Catholicism and Protestantism, having predated either of those groups before being restored in 1830. However, it is sometimes grouped with other religions or groups of religions such as Protestant churches. For example, U.S. Army chaplains who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ wear the same insignia as other Christian churches. "Mormonism" as a term is not accurate and is not adequately descriptive, given that it can refer to any of several smaller churches that have separated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and are not affiliated; we also avoid using the term "Mormonism" because in using it, a person avoids using the name of Christ, who is the central figure of our religion.

I love the video but i don’t like the way she was speaking because didn’t feel the spirit of it and if i was not a member I’d probably think this is a cult or scheme. My advice would be to speak soft and slow like the Apostles in the Rome Temple with the quiet hymn in the background, it really brings the spirit. Love how the work is hastening ❤️

I think the delivery is perfect for people outside of the church. The matter of fact tone is actually more appealing to people who are more logical. For people in the church, it’s strange and foreign and doesn’t feel like the spirit. But for people seeking information about what the church believes, I think it’s great. Reminds me of a concise Prager university video.

I'm Catholic, we believe in three places people can go to after they've died; Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Heaven is where those without sin go (we call them Saints, and all aim to become one), Hell is where the dammed go who have refused God's grace and Purgatory is where those who can't go to heaven yet because they've still got sins on their soul, but they spend time in Purgatory as penance and can eventually make it to heaven. Only our souls go to heaven, not our bodies. We don't know much about heaven, because we can't comprehend it as humans on earth, until we get there. On Judgement day (the last day of the world) Everyone will be judged, God is the judge, some may go to hell, where they must stay for eternity and then heaven and earth will join together as one "a new heaven and a new earth" and those who God judges to be able will live in a perfect world forevermore and eternity, with God and all the angels and blessed Saints and there will be no suffering, and God will reveal things to us.

Hello Simon, Latter day saints belief is similar to the Catholics in that before we are assigned to one of those degrees of glory we go to one of two places. Those good people who have accepted Christ go to the Spirit Paradise and those who haven't and are sinful go to the Spirit Prison, what you call Purgatory. We too believe that those in Purgatory or Spirit prison can eventually make it to the Spirit Paradise through repentance, which we believe is much more difficult to do as a spirit than as a person with a body here on earth. And we also believe in that we all will be resurrected to a perfect form physically with our spirits as taught in the Bible.

This is quite confusing. You are taking Paul's words completely out of context and putting different meaning into them. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul describes the diversity of creation to show how magnificent God, the Creator, is. He shows that the heavenly and earthly bodies (in the sense of bodies of plants, stars, sun, moon, animals, etc) each have their own significance and glory/brilliance. It has nothing to do with degrees of glory a person receives after death. And then you just go and say "Joseph Smith said this and this". It might be helpful to next time just quote the teaching of Joseph Smith, without the Biblical references, to make your explanations make more sense, because you can get your explanations without the Bible.
@00Fisher00
@00Fisher00 5 жыл бұрын
1 Corinthians 15 deals largely with resurrection, which Paul mentions again in verse 40, right after referring to the glory of the sun, moon, and stars. When we are resurrected, we face judgment and receive the degree of glory that God wills for us. So it's very much in context. The words of modern-day prophets are, of course, important, and Joseph Smith added to our understanding, but we have no reason to reject scripture.
@epicrhonda
@epicrhonda 4 жыл бұрын
@@00Fisher00 In these specific verses of 1 Corinthians 15 - which are indeed taken out of context and not fully quoted, Paul is replying to the cynicism of the people who are questioning the possibility of resurrection because the fleshly body will be gone saying, "what kind of body will we have?" He uses the examples of humans, animals, birds and fish to explain different kinds of flesh. Then he describes different kinds of celestial bodies - the sun, moon, and stars, which differ in their glory, stating that the individual stars each have different glory. He does this to bring understanding to the naysayers that an earthly body is not the only kind of body. That there is a different kind of body with a different kind of glory than our earthly body. This is not talking about degrees or levels of heaven that a person will go to according to their works on earth. If you read the rest of the passage, Paul is clear that every body will be transformed from a physical body to a spiritual body, whether by resurrection or by transformation (for those who don't die but are swept up at the last hour). There is no place in this passage that says people will go to different places once they have their spiritual body. That is addressed in other passages and it is clear to me that you either inherit the kingdom of God or you don't. You don't inherit different "levels" of Heaven. I know you believe that because a third Heaven is mentioned one time in 2 Corinthians that there has to be levels of Heaven, but I just don't see that supported in any of my research. Understanding the culture of the time when Paul was teaching, his audience understood the terminology "the heavens" to represent the different layers of the firmament - the first layer being the sky where the clouds are, the second layer being the space beyond where the sun, stars and planets are, and the third being Heaven - where God resides. The Bible isn't specific about it, but it does talk about the heavens, or the heavenlies when referring to the different layers of the firmament. And other text, written during the same time by scientists and philosophers confirm that understanding. Being that it is a single remark made by Paul and not a major theme, it is dangerous to build a theology on it, especially a theology that has to make a lot of suppositions that aren't supported anywhere else, other than the words of Joseph Smith, a man who made false prophecies.
@00Fisher00
@00Fisher00 4 жыл бұрын
@@epicrhonda But Joseph Smith didn't make false prophecies. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints do rely on modern prophets' words in understanding these matters, and as we study scripture we don't limit ourselves exclusively to the Bible. These videos are awesome. But to be clear, Latter-day Saints do believe in a punishment for sin. Ultimately, those who reject Christ's sacrifice on their behalf will have to pay the penalty for their own sins - which is a punishment likened most often to fire and brimstone. It'll have an end once justice has been met but Christ himself described it in these poignant words: "...how sore you know not, how exquisite you know not, yea, how hard to bear you know not.... Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit-and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink" (Doctrine & Covenants 19).
@zrosix2240
@zrosix2240 3 жыл бұрын
And even these will inherete a degree of glory in the Telestial kingdom. Those who pay the punishment of their OWN sins and are cleansed through suffering, once justice has been met and they have received just punishment according to their specific sins. (Sort of like a sentencing for your crimes, it’s more or less severe depending on the severity of your crime) even they are heirs of salvation. The ONLY ones to be cast out to outter darkness are the sons of perdition. Those who not only REFUSE Christ’s sacrifice, but actively deny him and consciously choose Lucifer over Christ, after having received a perfect knowledge (a perfect knowledge being that which all men will have by the end of Christ’s millennia). The one thing I never understood is, how would one refuse Christ’s sacrifice? Certainly not out of humility. I’m assuming by refusing his sacrifice it means refusing to repent, as in never truly feeling sorrow for the sin you have committed. As god knows your true intent and contents of your heart, if a man in the spirit world does not repent, he is not a partaker of Christ’s atonement

The blessings of eternal marriage between man and woman are intended for all of God's children. Concerning exactly how it will work out, you're likely to only get speculation from people commenting. That might be frustrating, but everybody goes through life for long periods of time without understanding some things, and even though we learn much over the years if we are trying to, there's no particular guarantee of knowing many other things before we die. What's crucial now is to seek and receive a reassurance from God through the Holy Ghost; with that, we can find the patience and peace to continue on without knowing some things immediately. That being said, what we feel in our physical bodies tends to be connected to chemical interactions, and human sexuality is definitely part of that. We do believe that we will be resurrected to ideal or "perfect" bodies, so it is likely that all of us will experience physical existence differently in some ways. I wouldn't want to try to speculate much on that topic though, out of a concern of offending people with things that no one on Earth really knows right now.

Like Kevin said, spirit prison is like hell, in that you reach a place (not paradise) where you can recall all of your mistakes and sins, and the feeling of guilt is overwhelming. Guilt is pain, pain is hell. If we repent in this life, we will not have to suffer through this pain after we die, as the Savior has already bore this pain for us, but if we do not repent the pain is ours to bear. We would be wise to repent and come unto Christ while in this life, but there is still the opportunity for a second chance if we do not, though it will be less pleasant for us.

Among other things, some people will have been in the habit of seeking satisfaction through bodily/carnal pleasures while neglecting other things that bring lasting happiness, such as, for example, serving others. Not having a body will mean not being able to experience any physical pleasure whether of a sinful variety or not, but I imagine it will feel very limiting in some ways compared to how we feel now. (It will likely feel relieving in some other ways, particularly for those with severe disabilities.) Perhaps we could say that if we've learned to live more spiritually while in our mortal lives, we'll be more comfortable when we only have spirits, and not bodies.

I think this is not totally doctrinally correct. It doesn't explain that ALL the spirits of men/women go to the Spirit Prison (prison because we can't access our mortal body). So I might ask the question, where did the thief go who went to "Paradise" with Christ the day of the crucifixion. He didn't go to heaven with his God because that is not where Christ went. Not until three days later. This needs to be corrected because it is misleading.

@@churchofjesuschrist But you leave the most important part out on this video! Where do ALL the spirits of men go after death? Spirit Prison which is divided into Paradise and Hell. By leaving this out you leave out where the thief went WITH Christ which is clearly taught in the New Testament so plainly. Christ himself went there for three days and was considered in prison without his body. Your video leaves out the most choice teaching in the New Testament about what happens at death. There is NO reference to Paradise which is referenced in the New Testament. This video, in my opinion, does a disservice to Christ and the Doctrines he taught and the story of the Thief on the cross next to him. Then three days later Christ tells Mary he is going to his Father, proof that Paradise is NOT Heaven.
@montanafamilyhome
@montanafamilyhome 5 жыл бұрын
@@onejay8585 We all do go to the Spirit Prison which is made up of Paradise and Hell. Paradise, where Christ and the the thief went is instructive to what happens to all of us. We all go to the Spirit Prison, some to Paradise where Christ and the thief went and some to Hell. And Paradise is prison and is NOT where Heavenly Father dwells a fact proven by Christ in a statement to Mary after being resurrected. Paradise is the very key to where we go after death since Christ and the thief both went there and many of us will go there also.

I appreciate your engagement in discussion here, Dallas. I think part of your concern arises out of common terminology with slightly different usages. Did you take a look at the link in the Church's reply to your comment? There, you will find some good explanation. When we die, we all go to the Spirit World, which consists of both Paradise and Prison. We're using some of the same terms here, slightly differently, but you seem to agree that spirits do not yet arrive in Heaven with Heavenly Father, but rather have to wait for a time in Paradise or Prison/Hell. I think that you'll find that Latter-day Saint beliefs are well-founded in scripture, both in the Bible and in more recent revelations found in the Doctrine and Covenants. If you feel that there was not enough emphasis on Paradise in this video, I can respect that. I've heard many filmmakers (through commentaries on disks) who have expressed regret or frustration about having to take out certain things for the sake of brevity. Normally I find discussion of Paradise just about any time we mention Prison, so if you feel that Paradise should have been mentioned and explained more I understand.
