MLB and NHL drafts have that in common, most picks take years to develop unless it's a generational talent

Depends on when. About a quarter of first round picks play their draft year, very rarely a second rounder (Patrice Bergeron, Brandon Saad). But it's a bit more than the MLB.

Top picks in hockey tend to play pretty quickly, often times less than a year after being drafted. The difference is hockey players are coming out of a junior hockey system where they generally have a better level of coaches and play a higher level of competition than high school baseball players do.

@@breadandcircuses8127 that would probably be a question for a Canadian. They have a lot of junior leagues. It's their national sport but a distant 4th here with soccer quickly gaining ground. Hockey players start playing in these Junior leagues much younger than Americans start in baseballs minor leagues. Junior leagues and minor leagues in baseball in the states continue to exist out of tradition. Basically they were there first and college has never been able to overtake the established junior teams for talent and fans. They were around before college sports evolved and they were and still are profitable. When college sports rose in popularity, small towns already had a local baseball team to root for and the minor leagues were the established system for top prospects. Minor league teams remain profitable, MLB likes the system so it continues American football and basketball rose in popularity with the college game. There weren't established junior teams or minor league teams in all the small towns that have minor league baseball, so those sports fans grew up rooting for the local college team rather than the local minor league team. My bet is if someone tried to start a basketball minor league and put a team in Louisville, KY, the locals would yawn and continue to be devout university of Kentucky fans, and spend their basketball dollars on Kentucky tickets and merch.

I knew a guy growing up who got drafted by the Orioles. He was a really late round selection though so he had to give it up when he got 2 girls knocked up within 6 months. The like 10k or so he was getting per season (this was early 2000's) wasn't enough to support himself let alone kids so he had to get a real job.

I remember back in the 90's, when teams had more minor league teams and the draft was bigger, hearing that once you were drafted your odds of ever playing even 1 mlb game was about 1 in 40. Kinda curious what those odds are nowadays.

Just letting you know, dont be sad for ending your career; only 0.5% of all Baseball players reach to the MLB, so a big minority are the ones who reach the top, making it easy the hardest sports to reach the top level. the fact that you got selected on a MLB draft is a big accomplishment that you need to be proud of. I wished to develop a Baseball career but was really cut short at 10-12 by an ankle injury, one that recently haunted me by a threath of a cronic ankle injury (I could live with ankle sprain all the time, having treatment all the time) heads up man!!

And sometimes organizations put together a program so disastrously ill-conceived that it sends their prospect development pool back by several seasons. Case in point: back in 2018, the Texas Rangers drafted three high school pitchers in the first four rounds. Once they came to terms with those players, they were placed in a "de-load" program, where the players were prevented from pitching or even throwing for the rest of the season and instead focus on strength and conditioning and educational sessions on nutrition and game situations. The idea was to give the players a rest after a busy high school and travel circuit season in hopes of preventing injuries. Unfortunately the program was an abject failure and most of the pitchers ended up with Tommy John surgery, and even the ones that avoided that fate have seen their progress stall out. So while other 2018 draft picks have become All-Stars and Cy Young contenders and ALCS and World Series MVPs, the Rangers have gotten almost no production from their 2018 draft class.

Teams tend to target certain years to bring up their best prospects as a group in hopes of creating a core of a winning team for a long time. For example, the Cubs seemed to have targeted next year as when they want to try to open their next competitive window. This year's team of veterans playing so well complicates things, though.

I think the difference why baseball players don't immediately debut in the big leagues is because baseball is a much more complex sport, it's about making adjustments as you go, you can have talent but without the experience the other players will make adjustments to beat your talent, now it's easier with all the analytics available, that's why they need a few years in the minors, experience is the most important thing in the mental game of baseball. Btw good video

I absolutely love minor league baseball. For $5 I was able to see a single A game in 2017 in Lansing, Michigan that had Vladdy jr, Tatis jr, Bo Bichette, and Jack Suwinski play in front of like 300 fans! (If that)…. I actually have a video on my phone of a teenage vladdy grounding out to a teenage tatis not realizing what I was even capturing. People sleep on minor league games, but that’s where these guys all start at unless they’re an absolute freak.

I got 4 free tickets from my mom's work for the Toledo Mud Hens this summer and it was an amazing time. I had been a few times before, but this was my first time as an adult and I brought some friends. We were above the opposing team's dugout and the players interacted with us. I had a cold Yungling and a "polish cowboy" and both were delicious. Go to minor league baseball games!

Yea I have partial season tickets to the Hens! The great thing about Triple A is the talent is nearly MLB level and you see a ton of guys that will go back n forth to the big league club or you’ll see a star mlb player on rehab assignment. It’s definitely good baseball at that level for minor league prices.

Traditionally minor league TV broadcasts are sporadic with very low production value. I don't know how much that may have changed in the modern streaming era. There's not enough interest outside of the small rural towns minor league teams are located in to warrant broadcasts, and teams feel if the product is available on TV, the ballpark will be mostly empty. They'll make more money selling tickets and concessions to 2,000 extra fans per day then they'll make on ad revenue after production costs to broadcast a game for 20,000 viewers.

MLB and NHL have unique minor league prospect pipelines because those sports and systems were popular and widespread before the rise of college sports while much of the rise in popularity of football and basketball was in the college system. Minor leagues in baseball and hockey carried on because local fans still preferred the local minor league team to the local college team, and the leagues and teams were profitable and useful. The advantage baseball and hockey players have over basketball and football players is they can play in college or go pro and get paid to try to develop into a star where basketball and football players have to go through the amateur college system to develop and take their shot.

doesn't really apply to basketball going forward. for a long time ncaa ball was the only option but now HS basketball players have the chance to go pro with domestic leagues like Overtime Elite or go international and play in places like Europe or Australia.
@patrickledonne5547
@patrickledonne5547 9 ай бұрын
@@WastedBananas some Americans have always played overseas. They usually go after college however. Turkish and Italian teams don't spend much time scouting high school ball, and not speaking the foreign language can be an impediment to learning.. As far as domestic leagues go, 2 things need to happen before they might overtake the NCAA for top level potential pro talent. First, the value of compensation offered by domestic leagues needs to exceed that of college. That's more than free school, room and meals. How good are the coaches and facilities. Where Will my likeness be worth more? Will domestic league exposure match NCAA exposure? Once a domestic league can offer more total value to a player, they now need to convince enough players to choose the league so the strength of competition can match a major conference school. As long as 90 out of the top 100 recruits are choosing the NCAA and teams like duke and Kentucky can trounce a domestic league team, interest in the league will never take off. Right now the only good option if you have NBA aspirations is college ball.

To answer with an example - the Mets got the 11th pick of the 2022 Draft because they failed to sign Kumar Rocker with the 10th pick of the 2021 Draft. The Astros actually got Alex Bregman #2 in 2015 because they failed to sign the #1 overall pick in 2014.

baseball is the professional game (i refuse to call it a sport even though it's played by athletes) where variance is such a massive factor in outcomes. elements play a roll, temperature, humidity and wind, in outcomes. As well as little things because there are millions of possible permutations of outcomes of the exact same type of pitch all related to variables too numerous to list. the besr players in the world get 10% more hits than average players...tells you all you need to know.
