@wendigo53Ай бұрын
Yup. To count as an "official game" for the standings, even in amateur leagues, need the ref. One time in 2004, our soccer game's ref didn't show up, so we played a 90-minute "exhibition game", then the league gave us an extra game later in the year.

This was mentioned on Secret Base as well, where they revealed that Mickey Volcan actually called a faceoff violation on one of his teammates.

I read that while researching this video, but the NHL.com article that it was reported in has since been deleted... so I left it out just in case it was false. The Secret Base video on this topic (as well as everything they make) is tremendously good!

Not true. If a goal is scored the ref drops the puck at center ice, or if the linesmen make a wrong icing call, both of these result in the puck being dropped at center ice.

I was at a college hockey game once where the ref (only one ref each game at the time) got an errant slash to the face from a check right next to him. Fortunately there was only a couple of minutes left in a 4-0 game, so the game was finished with just the linesmen. It wasn't long after that when the conference "promoted" all the linesmen to assistant referees because of that plus a few controversial calls and non-calls occuring elsewhere, though that new title eventually went away when the NCAA decided to switch to the 2-ref system.
@ianbui5356Ай бұрын
I should also add that college refs and linesmen used to not wear any kind of face protection. I'm not sure how true it is, but at the time it was suggested the concern was they could distort or otherwise partially obstruct the officials' eyes. After this incident, they started wearing the half shields/visors that a lot of them do today. IIRC the injured ref had to have eye surgery as a result, so naturally a lot of his colleagues decided a visor was the way to go.
@brendonneely945627 күн бұрын
1:00 - The linesmen actually conduct the majority of the faceoffs. The referee does at least the first faceoff of every game. Depending on the level of hockey, they may do additional faceoffs as well, such as the first faceoff of every period and/or the first faceoff after each goal is scored, but all other faceoffs are always done by linesmen.

Something similar to this happened in the Wales Conference Finals in 1988 between the Devils and the Bruins. There was a "heated" discussion between ref Don Koharski and Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld in the tunnel after the game. Koharski said that he was pushed by Schoenfeld which led to further name calling. The NHL Suspended Schoenfeld for the next game but Lou Lamarello got a judge to overturn the suspension. This lead to the officials refusing to come out for the game stating if Schoenfeld was on the bench, they weren't doing the game and they had to use replacement officials for the game. Schoenfeld was re-suspended the following game and the NHL agreed to send officials after he was suspended again. Boston won the series and got their teeth kicked in by Edm and a young rookie named Wayne Gretzky....

The Schoenfield Incident is def something I wanna cover in the future. He legit told Koharski to “have another donut” and almost fought each other 😂

Just recently found out after over 35 years: the NHL asked Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean to referee that game. He was probably more qualified than the guys that actually did, but he turned the opportunity down.

0:34 every professional level hockey game is but games that aren’t professional (like 16U games) generally have 2 officials and both of them are linesmen and refs (there can sometimes be one on rare occasions)
@AureliusR29 күн бұрын
I think you missed another game where this happened. If I recall correctly, it was due to the whole "eat another donut" incident, and the officials refused to continue the game, so they ended up with players officiating? Or maybe I'm mixing up two games. In either case, I remember seeing footage of guys in plain yellow jerseys warming up, and then doing a really crap job because they were nervous, made a bunch of errors like not getting out of the way of the play very well, etc. But like this incident I don't think it lasted long.

We did this every practice. It’s called shinny. Or a “scrimmage”. We would solve penalties by loss of possession or a faceoff but there was still fights and on ice vengeance. Not a real game unless there is some kid of mutual officiating.

Btw, the refs do not drop the puck for face offs. The only time they drop the puck is at center ice after the goals
@earboysportАй бұрын
My fault on that one! Meant to edit that or put a note but forgot. I also recently read that Linesman dropping the puck even after goals is more common nowadays too.
@GolfLegends69Ай бұрын
@ Yup. Sometimes depends what country you are in for the different official procedures. I’m a ref myself in Canada and they always like the linemen doing every faceoff except for the ones at center ice

The Devils had this happen a 2nd time, May 1988. The night of the replacement referees.
@earboysportАй бұрын
Really similar situation, but in that case I believe they used minor league refs to fill in, instead of players. There’ll be a video on that sometime in the future.
@evanschemenauer1356Ай бұрын
@earboysport no, they used the Devils' score keepers and goal judges. Back then, the NHL brought in minor officials (score keepers and goal judges) from other teams for playoff games, but the home town minor officials still came to the arena to show them how the equipment worked. The referee was the only one of the three with any actual refereeing experience. It's funny watching them drop the puck from the wrong side of the dot or trying to scramble away after dropping the puck. Also the NHL VP who was at the game sat in the penalty box and was allowed to call penalties of he saw them.
@ranger9347Ай бұрын
Your story is incorrect. The game in Boston was not the night before, but that very afternoon against the Rangers. Those officials were trying to make it from Boston to Hartford after the day game. Normally, the 100 mile drive is easily no problem in the 3 1/2 hours between games. However, the snow as horrendous that day. Me and some buddies were at both games. We took a Greyhound bus which made it through on time. Those guys must have been in a super slow car ride. But all these years later, I never thought I would hear about this again. I was 20 then. 62 now.
@earboysportАй бұрын
To be honest, there's a bit of conflicting stories when it comes to this night, so I just went with the one that was easiest to explain. I also read that they officiated that afternoon game, but NHL.com has the officials listed as Wally Harris, Ryan Bozak and Ray Scapinello. www.nhl.com/gamecenter/bos-vs-nyr/1983/01/15/1982020465 Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if just through the confusion and turmoil of the night, things just were never fully recorded and reported properly. Also, either way I am wrong, because the Bruins did not play the night before, rather it seems that Ron Fournier flew in from Buffalo into Boston, and then drove. Ultimately, still new to researching all this stuff as efficiently and accurately as I can, so I appreciate you correcting where it's needed. But holy hell, what a game to be at. Sure it's something you'll never forget
