You know, one of my friends exposed his NT4.0 Advanced Server box that runs Exchange and IIS sometime last year, and the worst that happened was the creation of a few empty folders for all this time. Doing the same on Windows 2000 ended badly, something you've already confirmed yourself. Maybe you should try out NT4 too.

How do attackers find such an unsecured windows server? Do they simply poke every possible ipv4 address and hope that eventually they find a server which let's them in?
@frankbucciantini388

Yes, they're periodically scanning the whole IPv4 address range and net mapping every device to see which one is vulnerable and has the ports open. Pretty scary.

We still have a literal handful but all of those are on death row and will be uplifted by the end of this year. We still had a single, solitary, one-off Windows 2000 box running as late as 2017 but it's gone now. We still have a decent number of 2012 R2 boxes (base 2012 is banned) that are allowed to stay _for now_, but the acceptable minimum at our place is 2016. That makes up the bulk of our estate and we have about a 70-30 split between 2019 and 2022 as well.

Why would anyone use this over linux? You have to buy a license per every connection? WTF?
@DozIT
@DozIT 4 ай бұрын
Depends on the server edition, each user OR device using the server needs to be licensed (web hosting does not require additional licensing). Unfortunately Windows Server is the only (viable, scalable, and reliable) way to manage dozens, or hundreds of windows boxes on a network (Active Directory, WSUS, BranchCache, and of course Group Policy)
@jimnor8817

Linux can't effectively manage Windows endpoints without a ton of headaches / compromises. *nix OSes have several applications that they're great at but this isn't one of them.
@halfbakedproductions7887
@halfbakedproductions7887 4 ай бұрын
@@jimnor8817 Yep, we have loads of Linux stuff in our estate that Windows clients can auth against, but it's not AD. We have AD groups to manage application/system access and that access will allow your AD account to authenticate against those, but our actual directory management is AD. Vintela is used as a shim for the Unix estate.

I use it mainly as a file server, central repository for my main data collection which consists of programs I've created, shareware etc I've downloaded, music, and videos. I don't get on the internet with it because no browser will install on it any more. I use a different Win10 computer for accessing the internet. I got the server free over 10 years ago before we had 8 TB drives. Today it probably wouldn't make sense to set it up as I have but it's still working so why change it, although other newly available options would certainly use less power.

Eric, honestly to avoid all those stupid malware is just block SMB port which is 445/TCP. Actually most of bots use it eternal blue exploit to get in, it works to all windows until server 2019 as far i remember.

Elon Musk thinking it was reasonably safe to expose Windows Server to the internet w/o additional measures or not caring at all certainly explains why he though "full self-driving" was ready be4 the pandemic when it barely is now.

@@papajohnscookie Yeah, but in the early days of PayPal they didn't have nearly as high a market share. Also, I'd trust RedHat & co. over M$ any day; especially with those proprietary bits.

@@whohan779what does market share have to do with the OS your servers are running? Just because they prefer a different, very popular OS doesn't make them irrational or delusional.
