The pressure inside the barrel trying to escape is what makes it go boom. If you have wooden barrels full of it though, then it can explode. Explode as in a huge amount of fire expanding for a couple seconds.

Sooo when I was a kid, I'm taking almost 4 decades ago... Shit I've gotten old.. I used to take 22 rounds take off the lead with pliers sometimes using my teeth yeah I know but the early 80s was a different time, and I would pour it into a cardboard tube. I would take a fuse from a m80 and then melt candle wax to seal the gun powder in. It never explode like I was expecting it to, looked more like a flare. So then I got creative and would make lines with the gun powder around my Gi Joes and place black cats under 😂 I would make my own warzone

The only reason it goes boom is because the gun powder is compact into a small space so when it makes falme it has no where to go but forward, so itcreats a concentrated blast of fire like an explosion. Making it go boom
