No, it's actually to attract predators. Males use it to blackmail females into mating, essentially. Females are the ones on the bottom during mating so they are likelier to be eaten by fish from below. Males can tap the water to potentially attract fish, and the female will quickly submit to mating so that he stops, or she will get eaten.

If a female water strider rejects a male from mating with her, the male will often create water agitation nearby the female so fish and other aquatic predators come and eat her. They pretty much hold the female at gunpoint for mating.

As video said, you can also find them on stagnant water - the lack of flow and cleaning agents usually turns said water into a breeding ground for bacteria and algae, and, if there's fish or any other form of aquatic life (but not limited to it), you will also find ammonia, detritus and decomposing organic material in it, making it neither clean nor safe to drink.

I am a pool guy and figured this out. Water striders are super hard to catch cause they are unbelievably fast and have crazy reflexes. I often use a tile soap to break the surface tension to make all the debris go to the edges and clear the water. This got me thinking, “if water striders need surface tension, what if I just remove it”. I sprayed around one and instantly it struggled and couldn’t move fast at all. They end up drowning in about a minute. I was so happy when I figured it out cause otherwise they are a nightmare.
