0^0 can be either 1 or undefined. There is no agreed-upon value and different contexts will use different values, making both answers acceptable. It is interesting to see which side the calculators choose. My Android phone returns "Undefined or 1" when I do this, making it a good compromise.

From what I recall, y^0 ends up being 1 because the 0 is considered not a 0 but a limit closing in on 0 from the positive, so they write it as 1 figuratively. It's never considered truly 0, but the smallest value next to 0, which supposedly returns 1, because y^10e-323 would be so close to 1 you'd be not asked to write it. Y^0 is indeed undefined

I personally believe 0^0 = 1, and here's why: The main reason for disagreement among the mathematics community is that 0^x = 0 as x -> 0(+). Notice the plus sign here. If, instead, I used 0^x = 0 as x -> 0(-), I would be dividing by zero at every step. Therefore, there is no "neutral" limit of 0^x = 0 as x -> 0, so the gap is filled with the value of the *other* limit, x^0 = 1 as x -> 0.

Interesting how ReactOS' calculator is the only one that returned 0... Gnome Calculator was the most correct and verbose, as always. Makes me think Gnome has a team on mathematicians working on the calculator to ensure it's 100% correct. All the programming languages returning 1 wasn't that surprising. Also, here are some tips: Java versions 9 and higher include a program called jshell, at least on linux. It's an interactive REPL, just like python. To show JavaScript, you could just open up devtools on a page such as about:blank instead of making a whole page from scratch. Alternatively you could install nodejs and run it in a terminal.

Mine does, some Casio. Siri interestingly says 1 without error, the calculator say 0 if it‘s not the main calculation, for example 1+8*(0^0). 0/0^0 gives out a math error too.

0 raised to any power is 0, but any number raised to the power of 0 is 1. 0^0 causes a contradiction where the answer would either be 0, breaking the second rule, or 1, breaking the first rule. For that reason it’s undefined.

The negative power of 0 has no solution, because the negative power of any number is equal to the reciprocal of the corresponding positive power, and 0 has no reciprocal.

"0 raised to any power is 0" As newname points out, this is false. 0 raised to any _positive_ power is 0. The "rule" is false for negative powers and many complex powers. However, the other rule "any number raised to the power of 0 is 1" does not have any restrictions on it. Positive, negative, complex, etc. The first rule _MUST_ break at 0, but the second rule is true everywhere. So no, 0^0 = 1 would not cause any breaks in these rules since the first rule _HAS_ to break at 0 anyway.

No it is undefined. Most of the calculators hardcode that anything raise to 0 is 1. But actually 0^0 is undefined. Gnome does a better job in this.

The situation is that, if you view the exponent 0 as discrete exponentiation, 0^0 is unambiguously 1. This is provable by several definitions of discrete exponentiation and always is the correct result when plugging into a formula using discrete exponentiation. On the other hand, if you view the exponentiation as continuous, 0^0 is typically left undefined because (→0)^(→0) is an indeterminate limiting form. If you are programming a calculator to use arithmetic as an approximation for limits, then you should have 0^0 undefined in your calculator. However, even then, (→0)^(→0) is a pretty "weak" indeterminate form in the sense that most practical/useful examples of functions f(x) and g(x) with f(x)→0 and g(x)→0, we get f(x)^g(x)→1.
