@@Andy-qm2md Wand makers aren't the Apple of the wizarding world. While it's true that wizards and witches don't need wands to perform magic - they can use any object or none at all - it has been found that wands are the best at channeling a wizards or a witch's magic. In essence, they wouldn't be the iPhone of the wizarding world. They would be a fighter jet to your Icarus wings. The wand is alive before it chooses its owner. It's like a lonely heart, longing for it's only match and once it finds it, it will stay loyal till death or till someone else proves a better match than what it first thought. Except for those few wands that doesn't change allegiance, what so ever. I look at wands a lot like I look at emotions. Emotions cannot be explained away. There are no logical sense to them and the more you try to make them make sense, the further into insanity you'll slip. The only way to understand emotions, are to accept their existence and allow them to live - both bad and good, they all must live. Live and then die, before being birthed into a new emotion. Like the life cycle of a Phoenix.

Also, i think "retrieving the core" would be so risky to prevent damage, that it's not worthwhile. Also, the core is not the wand with its memories etc, but it's heart. So, you would end up with a core...if usable, like any other core. Rather pointless unless you are desperate...and then you might as well use a resistive wand.

My favorite bit of wandlore is that wands can be crafted by muggles. James Steward made the wands for his adoptive sons Chadwick and Webster Boot; as well as for other Illvermorny students. I think alot of questions can be answered by harry/Voldemorts wand. They are on opposite ends of the spectrum yet they share a core from one "Entity". Think about that. That same source chose 2 very different people. There are things that make them different there are things that made them the same. It mayb on those basis that a wand is more likely to change its allegiance or acquire a new owner perhaps even after death. I dont think anyone can just pick up ur wand even after u die. Perhaps that's the reason wizards are buried with their wands in the first place as finding a compatible match is not as likely as one may think. Obviously from Harry's trip to Olivanders there were a few wands that weren't even compatible with him and by extension wouldnt even be useable by Voldemort! Probably. This maybe even explain why it's easy to pass down wands in the weasly line. Even the hat recognized that "Another weasly" . There is a common personality or even core to their family. I wouldnt argue that blood is sufficient but rather their type of "Being". This mayb also why Voldemort can take wands from his followers as they are of the same thot.

Same core from the same Phoenix yes, but the wood themselves are polar opposites. Yew is symbolized as having power over life and death, is poisonous in all parts exceptng the berry flesh and remains poisonous after being harvested. Holly is symbolized as having luck, prosperity and protection from evil. With that in mind, and the fact that J K Rowling uses a lot of balance in her books Its not hard to see why a wand of Holly would pick Harry with his personality. Just as a poisonous Yew wand would pick Tom Riddle as a child for his clear desire to have control over others. Charlie getting a new wand tells me that his first wand (Ron's first also) was likely a hand-me-down for him too. I doubt very much that a wand that would accept say Percy Weasely would also accept Fred and George.

It’s probably because there’s so much that we don’t know. If such a subject does exist, it’d probably be taught strictly in theory and how to actually make wands would be the practical side of the class, I.e, binding the wood to the core, actually carving the wood, wood and core selection, etc.

What I found intriguing about Neville’s case is his resolve changed when Bellatrix escaped, and his determination on his parent’s behalf maybe won the wand over at last when he really buckled down because of the thought he may have yet to face his parent’s torturers in battle. It was like the wand was biding it’s time, seeing what would become of its new owner. And it’s new owner rose to the occasion when the threats to his family resurfaced o the wand was accepting of Neville at last and he was finally able to learn what he needed to and become a strong wizard in his own right.
@chubbyninja8424 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that you bring up Nevil. From the start of the book, he's regarded as being nearly a squib, but then something happens. LeStrange breaks out of Azkaban and Nevil approaches all of his spellwork from the perspective of getting revenge against LeStrange for what she'd done to his father, the previous wand owner. From that moment on, Nevil's magic becomes increasingly proficient and effective. It's as though the wand finally had a reason to work with Nevil.

What puzzles me is: What happens to a wand when when it's owner(who created horcruxes) dies. Voldemort created 7 Horcruxes, but still died. So what happens to his wand now? If a wizard splits his soul more than once(like Voldemort), how would that spiritually effect the wand?

Wands channel magic essence which can not be described as living or dead. Saying a wand chooses it's master is just being polite. Wizards don't know exactly how it happens but only that it does. They still can't exactly explain why muggle born wizards/witches occur only that it does. Wands are a unique tool to most wizards but not all wizards use wands. The Elder Wand is even more unique as it was crafted by death itself.
@norman59274 жыл бұрын
Charlie's wand was probably a family hand-me-down from a deceased relative. This would suggest that it was not a perfect match to Charlie and would explain why Charlie replaced it later. Fast forward to Ron, he gets the before-mentioned hand-me-down family wand and like Charlie, it was an imperfect match. Ron's magic greatly improved when he acquired a new wand that matched him better. Just like Neville, when he replaced his hand-me-down family wand his magic also improved greatly.

I tend to think of wands as part of the wizard's connection to the magic that's all around. Almost like the Force, if you want to put it that way. They have a natural connection, and then the wand itself becomes part of it and strengthens that connection. The wand will "choose" based on what kind of connection the person has with magic in general, and then will tune itself even more to them as they use it. The wizard kind of leaves a magical imprint on the wand that gets stronger the longer they use it. That's one reason Bellatrix's wand was so dangerous: It was tuned to her connection, which was very dark. It's the reason why a wand that has belonged to one person for so long will be more difficult for someone else to use, like how the wand Draco's mom gave to him didn't quite understand his magical commands. But if the wand is used for a lifetime, the connection might be too strong for it to ever transition to someone else. Or for a wand that has seen as many owners as the Elder Wand, it might be able to adapt quickly to a new style, but will likely "prefer" a certain type of connection or natural strength. It might not be that the wands themselves have a will, but that Magic in general does and it just manifests in certain ways in the way wands work. One thing I would like to know, though: Bellatrix was in Azkaban for years. How did she get her wand back after escaping? And then she was using it during the Battle of Hogwarts. How did she get it back from Harry/Hermione? Did they drop it in the vault?

Perhaps Neville's wand was unique in the sense that he had to earn the wand's approval (?). As his father, Frank Longbottom, was a heroic, brave and outstanding figure, the wand was unable to adjust to Neville's initial dissimilarity to his father (probably provoking the wand to be less useful to Neville). However, as Neville 'got over' his fears and became a more prominent leader amongst his peers, finding his 'true' inner Gryffindor, the wand grew to like him and so became more co-operative. I'm not sure about this but, If we regard wands to be sentient beings than maybe a wizard/witch has to earn the wand's companionship through actions and ability (as opposed to their initial behaviour/appearance). (?)

Hello, Dean! I think you and everyone here will find this excerpt about Hazelwood wands from the Wand Woods article on the Wizarding World site very interesting! A sensitive wand, hazel often reflects its owner’s emotional state, and works best for a master who understands and can manage their own feelings. Others should be very careful handling a hazel wand if its owner has recently lost their temper, or suffered a serious disappointment, because the wand will absorb such energy and discharge it unpredictably. The positive aspect of a hazel wand more than makes up for such minor discomforts, however, for it is capable of outstanding magic in the hands of the skillful, and is so devoted to its owner that it often ‘wilts’ (which is to say, it expels all its magic and refuses to perform, often necessitating the extraction of the core and its insertion into another casing, if the wand is still required) at the end of its master’s life (if the core is unicorn hair, however, there is no hope; the wand will almost certainly have ‘died’). Hazel wands also have the unique ability to detect water underground, and will emit silvery, tear-shaped puffs of smoke if passing over concealed springs and wells. My wand on the Wizarding World site is made of hazelwood and has a unicorn hair core. I use this wand as my Harry Potter OC's wand as well, so to use her as an example: When my OC dies, because her wand is a combination of hazelwood and unicorn hair, her wand will die with her, and become completely useless. The wand wood and unicorn hair will lose their magical properties, unable to be recycled and reused. This is another example of what can happen to a wand when its owner dies.

i think i read somewhere that wands itself are not magical like brooms, they simply help the wizards to use their powers easily and channel it and wizards so powerful can learn to fly and use magic without these 'objects'. We need Dean to make a video about this, what would happen to slytherin' s wand if someone figured out the password? Will it become active again or is it already destroyed ?

The SuperCarlinBrothers has a theory about why Ron has so much trouble with performing wandwork and it has a lot to do with Charlie's wand, it's core, and wood type.

Wow it never occurred to me that both Neville and Rons wands was never originally “theirs” -as a possible reason why they could barely control their wands. Granted, Neville was definitely not confident in his abilities and Ron was just pure lazy (and also unsatisfied by always taking hand me downs) .... i dont think they both gave the same respect and honor back to their wands either.

What if someone has two wands and uses them both at once? Like Dual wielding wands.

I’m sure this has been answered before but I was wondering what happened to some of your “the life of” videos? The ones that are still up remain some of my favorite of your videos, just wondering what happened to the rest?

what happened to the wand i.e. Dark lord's wand, he case it aside for the elder wand, in that case then what?

In professor Dumbledore's note on 'the tale of the three brothers' "most witches and wizards prefer a wand that has 'chosen' them to any kind of second-hand wand, precisely because the latter is likely to have learned habits from its previous owner that might not be compatible with the new user's style of magic. The general practice of burying (or burning) the wand with its owner, once he or she has died, also tends to prevent any individual wand learning from too many masters."

If i lived in the magic world, id most likely havee wandlore and wandcraft as my lifestyle. Its such a fascinating aspect of magic studies. I'd likely pursue other means of channeling magic as well.

I feel like a part of the wand would be severed, making it a basic tool unable to perform complex or powerful magic. Burying it with its owner would appropriate, but if say in a battlefield its owner was to be killed, and it was to be used by someone else without theirs, it could still be applicable for survival.

Argus Filch comes from a long proud line of Wizard's. He is depicted as a squib, unable to perform the most basic magical tasks. His wand was handed down from father to son for many generations. Filch, being the proud man he is, would have never thought the wand wouldn't work for him, as it had for previous Filch owners. The wand was depleted of it's magical usage due to it's old age, not being the elder wand, it was a fancy stick. Had Filch ever decided to try getting a new wand, one that chose him, it is possible he could have been a person of decent ability

Harry said in Deathly Hallows “If I die from a natural death, it should sever the wand’s (Elder Wand) power”. What does that mean, here r some thoughts.? 1. The wand will lose all of it’s power and become non magical 2. It will never connect to someone and thus never have a true master again. Still waiting on the video to explain Legilimency (JK Rowling’s version of telepathic mind-reading) and Occlumency (to block and shield ur mind)

My opinion on donation's is depending on it's wood specifically and just it's flexibility in general (core, length & wood reaction). For example, if a wand was unyielding or a similar type of inflexible, but it's wood didn't pair strongly to an owner by itself, I think the wand would allow itself to get donated if it was the owners intention (we know it is able to detect such things such as the elder wand's sentience). But, if the wood type (as we see with Ron's ash wand) is one which bonds with it's owner, then no matter what happens, the wand will not yield. Just my opinion but I think it's interesting
@jeskerjames29384 жыл бұрын
If I were gifted a wand, I would be very protective of it. Whether it is sentient or not, just the idea of it possibly being sentient would make me want to cherish it as a partner in all things magical. So I would hope the bond between me and my wand would be a powerful one.

According to Wizarding World, hazel wands wilt (expell all their magic) when their owner dies, requiring the core to be extracted if it needs to be reused. However if the core is unicorn hair then it will also wilt.

Is there a wood/feather combination that becomes unmanageable upon the wizard/witch death? I would think that wand would be to my liking as the combination of wand/user would be most loyal.

Couldn't you cut the bottom of the wand, pull the core out, and then remake the wood into a now slightly shorter wand?
