Interesting...I'm 60 and the mail carriers have always picked up mail here. Many home mail boxes have a red flag that you prop up so the mail carrier knows to stop even if he's not dropping off mail. Curious, what country are you in?

It’s Australia Day here in Australia - heading out to celebrate my Grandsons 3rd birthday today. Thank you for your thoughts for us here. Where I live is safe from the fires but there are a lot of places, peoples homes, the beautiful wildlife and pets and other animals that are in the thick of it. Fire is the scariest thing and I can only imagine how hard it is for the families and the firemen who have lost their lives trying to rescue others. May they always know how much we appreciate them

The post company has a list of everything that goes n a truck...if it wasn’t delivered then they would send a letter to the receiver saying what happened I lost mail from Australia post after a truck was flooded in the street they sent me a letter telling we what each item was and who to contact get them replaced...mine were only bills so wasn’t a big deal

It's great, except for when they randomly "don't have an image available for this piece of mail" or don't bother to leave your mail that is supposed to be coming. Apparently reporting it does absolutely nothing, so I'm not sure how much it really helps.

I have informed delivery for my mail. I get an email showing a pic of each piece of my mail I get for the day. So if the people had it they would have known what mail was burnt and go from there. If you want this service, all you have to do is log into or register at USPS and check the box for informed delivery.

I have been thinking about the soap, too! Lol you briefly showed it on the camera and I have been thinking about it ever since. A little scary that soap didnt melt. I've had mail destroyed before. They send you an apology letter with any bits that may be remaining (if there are any haha). The mail is all tracked electronically so they'll be able to tell who is missing things. That's why you see those odd ink markings over the stamp and along the bottom of the envelope, and the shipping labels on boxes. Also, be aware that wherever you put that birdfeeder will end up with bird poo beneath it. I had one but eventually got disgusted at all the poo on the windowsill all the time.

Maybe getting smoke yesterday caused some hoarseness today. Even though you can't see it, doesn't mean it's still not in the air. There was a car fire in front of my house a few years ago that scared me when the tires blew, so I can relate to that fear of the fire. I hope you two are doing better today.

This the first time I have heard of a mail van fire, after working 30+ years for the Post Office, in my country. From what was said and watching the fire, I would say it was caused by the engine. Maybe an oil leakage. Wasn't it said that the driver jumped out after spotting flames coming from the hand brake? Years ago we put up a bird feeder and developed a huge weed problems.

I never had mice in my house until I used one of those window bird feeders. I'm sure if you keep up on maintenance and you don't have a basement window directly below, I'm sure you're fine. I'm so glad you guys were safe from the fire and beyond the initial safety worries for the mail carrier and house etc I was glad you didn't have a Vertex or other expensive medical delivery coming. oops I just saw that you said that. (so Harry needs some small catnip filled toys that are not Ollies to bat around or Ollie needs a bunch of LARGE cat toys filled with catnip that they can share haha. OR not! Harry might need a cat sweater too if he's living by the fireplace. He seemed pretty chilled (relaxed) and happy after watching Ollie playing and was stretching and got back in his bed.

To help keep the bird feeder on the window, rub you finger along side your nose and then onto the suction cup. The oil from your nose will keep it on the window. Or use a small amount of water on the suction cup, that works too. I found this idea on the window feeder I purchased.

Window mounted bird feeders are great! Also watch out for bird collisions... I've heard sometimes they get confused. It took about a month for birds to come to mine without reflective tape up. Some birds are more brave than others about me watching (cardinals are very skittish but titmouse don't care at all). Enjoy!

USPS has a thing were if you sign up they will send you a list of all the mail you are supposed to get everyday with a photo of each piece. The only mail piece you don’t get a photo of is like advertising and coupons. Stuff that doesn’t have your name on it. I love this feature and it has been so helpful the last couple of years. So if something like this happened you would know what mail you were missing.

Hopefully people who lost their mail incoming or outgoing, things get replaced. Its pretty amazing that the soap did not melt. Real question is, what the heck is in the soap?

Ollie and harry are so cute together! We have had my cat for 3 years and my dog for 7.5 years. They love each other so much, but my dog refuses to let my cat play with any toys! If the cat gets a toy, the dog will steal it, and if the cat sniffs the dogs toys the dog runs away with them 😂

I would suggest a tray of some sort below the bird feeder and clean regularly this will help with the mice situation. It may also attract squirrels.

Hopefully who ever the soap was for isn’t like my daughter. She was allergic to most soaps and lotions sold in the store that she needs special kind. Her reaction is so bad if she gets soap on her skin it blisters then within few minutes those blisters break open and bleed. Same with the lotions. Feel. Bad for all who lost something in it.

Yikes! We live on a few acres in PA and across the street is a farm. I once watched a hawk attack a poor little bunny rabbit. I was so sad I made my husband go out and try to scare him away but it was too late. I was devastated!

We have hawks and have seen them carry off a squirrel . Always watch our little dog when she is out. Have heard of hawks trying to get dogs and cats and sometimes even if they can’t pick them up can injure them pretty bad trying.

Kirsten Courtney even if a bird of prey wasn’t able to carry a cat, it would do serious damage. Larger ones like eagles and osprey will absolutely take small dogs and cats. Our Sphinx are only allowed out if we can be right with them, they have no sense of danger. But ours will zip out if they get half a chance!

Most dogs know better. My boyfriends Boston Terrier did that with every single one of his toys and just played with the squeaker and never actually ate it. Most likely since it was in an animal toy it's none toxic materials also.

We had a similar but much larger situation when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. We did not have regular mail delivery for a calendar year. Even today all of these years later it is still suspect.

About 3 years ago our mail truck burned up and the mail lady was injured trying to get the mail out the truck. My sons tax refund check was in there and we had to get a letter from the post office and send in so he could get a replacement check. But they did send letters out to everyone on the route saying the truck had burned up. How strange to see it happen to ya'll.

Once I received a plastic bag with a piece of mail that had goten torn up in the PO eachinery. I received it a few weeks after it happened. It explained why my payment had not gotten posted on my account. The PO might do something likE that with any burned mail.

People will know if they left mail out to be collected. It's more serious for incoming mail that comes from out of the area where the sender will have no idea that it wasn't delivered and the recipient will not get things they weren't expecting.

The post office takes a picture of every piece of mail in order to automate delivery. This is saved in a database for a few months and is often used by law enforcement for investigations. They can easily (if they want) go back and figure out who didn't receive their mail. Unfortunately the mail that was just picked up is unrecorded and will cause everyone a big hassle. The mail that is partially burnt with enough delivery info will be placed in a clear plastic mailer and eventually resent to the proper person. I use Informed Delivery so I know what letters are going to arrive. It's a nice free service to have.

Hey Mary, not a critique, especially since it's done, but you were going to get exposed to particulate from the fire in your home, and you went out there while it was still in the air, no wonder you are hoarse! As a side note, allergens are heavy all seasons of the year in NC, and I imagine it could overwhelm some populations, even if they aren't allergic; I'd suggest y'all get a HEPA filter. I think that squirrels will be more of a problem on the feeder itself. I give the squirrels a share, but I sprinkle cayenne pepper on the seed because squirrels to not like it and it doesn't bother birds, who can't taste it. Mice might go after what falls on the ground.

You can chili powder in your bird feeder and it will keep mice away and squirrels. It doesn't hurt birds.

If you have problems with mice, rats and squirrels getting into bird feeders try putting chili pepper flakes in it. Most birds aren't affected by chemical that makes peppers spicy.
