Idea based off of your warped humanoid idea: the uvuudaum doesn't see itself as being hostile to the material realm. It got stuck in the Far Realm, learned of how the Far Realm can corrupt other planes, and came back to warn everyone. However, it was too warped already, and it's warning accidentally contained the eldritch corrupting truths that it was trying to avoid in the first place.

Idk why but I love the idea of having a horror game set in the far realms where the party is traveling with an npc who is slowly losing their humanity and turning into a uvudam or even doing that to a player while slowly giving hints as to what is happening.

I read a sci-fi short story once about a space voyage to a distant planet where the sheer boredom started making the crew suffer from time dilation effects, which might work well with your idea. Just have the afflicted party blink and all of a sudden, they're in the middle of a fight, you just say "It's round five and you've already taken 15 hp damage." Or, heck, even give them extra random turns in combat, the fact that you're not telling them _why_ that's happening will drive them mad.

A fun detail from the Epic Level Handbook for the Uvuudaum: Epic Level monsters also have access to epic level feats. One of these feats is Spell Stowaway. This feat allows the feat-holder to be affected by a certain spell if it was cast by someone within 300ft. The idea being that if a wizard cast Haste on themself and someone with Spell Stowaway for the Haste spell was within 300ft, then the feat-holder would also gain the effect of the Haste spell. So picture a wizard, seeing their friends driven mad by this creature's aura of confusion. The ranger just got launched into space. The barbarian has taken so much Wisdom drain they might become an NPC by next round. The cleric is blocked off by a Wall of Force. The wizard knows time is running out and casts Time Stop to try and cast some buffs. The Uvuudaum has Spell Stowaway for Time Stop. Time cannot protect you. Embrace the madness.

Given my experience with this monster, your explanation of them being former humans is really oddly on point. Me personally, I see the clothes and the Uvuudaum really reminds me of Nyartholotep in how it is shaped, one of the most "human" figures in the Lovecraft mythos. What did I mean by "oddly" on point? This is the most memorable monster in the game for me. The second to last major encounter in a 7 year campaign happened like this: We were betrayed, surrounded, overwhelmed, and our keep burned. Our barbarian pulled out a flask of something we got in someplace like Carceri, a flask of "Blood of the Ancient Gods," and drank it, transforming instantly into an Uvuudaum (who our barbarian player got to play). It dominated our ranger, and smoked all the enemies with its aura of confusion while we escaped. A party of 3 17th level characters now, we didnt think we had a chance except that one of those party members was a wizard. We called in a favor with an epic level wizard mentor, who cast some powerful ritual spells while we tried frantically to lock down the area of the approaching monster. We ended up literally glassing an area to get rid of the thing after we trapped it, breathing a big sigh of relief, stopping the far realm incursion and getting our full party back.

The Epic Level Handbook had rules that let you go as many levels as you want. They had stat blocks for Epic Level characters that went beyond level 30. Elminster for example, was level 35, 1 Fighter/2 Rogue/3 Cleric/24 Wizard/5 Archmage. Other books have even higher level epic levels characters. Ioulaum is a 31 Wizard/5 Archmage/5 Netherese Arcanist, he's also an Elder Brain Lich.

The new spell idea was that it was an invitation for some unfathomable horror from the Far Realm to chew on the space of the target area from the other side of the veil. My homebrew mod of the spell required that the caster have the feat Dark Speech in order to be able to call on the Far Plane thing.

The point about building up to an encounter and the cold damage turning off its regeneration made me think you could do some The Thing scenarios with it. The party finding itself in the laboratory of some ancient wizard or the ruins of a citadel that once belonged to an order that rooted out cults. There would be clues around and then a sample of flesh kept extremely cold or encased in ice. If the party just defrosts it without having investigated the area first then good luck to them as it begins to regenerate again.

@jonahcraven8669
@jonahcraven8669 10 ай бұрын
Technically, rules as written, it's 20d6, as fall damage caps out at that. Terminal velocity and all that. Yeah, it's a stupid rule, and if someone wanted to homebrew that out, I'd have no issue with it whatsoever. But as it stands, the absolute maximum damage you can take from a fall is 120, or 240 if you're vulnerable to bludgeoning damage for some reason.

In terms of fall damage, you'd just cap out at some point upon reaching terminal velocity, though given that you're literally falling from space, you might also have to add some fire damage from atmospheric entry

After a short calculation, "Nailed to the Sky" teleports it's target to 74 000 feet above. As it's outer space in most case, you cannot move in a normal way, but in an Elemental Plane it's just a distance (if you are in the Elemental Plane of Water, and deep enough, you doesn't need to fly to go back, it's enough if you can swim), But anyway, you would have more than enough time even if you would be falling, to cast a teleport spell. Except, in that case your momentum would be kept after the teleport, so you would likely die from the moment you catch up with the ground...

I really love the concept of a monster from a plane of "madness" and chaos that just wants to get home again. It isn't even necessarily malicious, even if it's causing untold horrors and destruction. It's just breaking things in desperation to escape a plane that feels stifling and constricting. Possibly even painful. I've toyed with the idea a little in one of my original stories and I really have to do something more involved with that sometime... For a TTRPG group, they could even end up helping the thing, figuring that if they send it home that might be the faster and easier way to stop it from breaking everything in its attempts to get out on its own. Hm...

Just a minor nitpick, but Manual of Planes came out before the Epic Level Handbook, which makes MotP their first appearance. That said, awesome video as always. I never used one of these in my games, but I had only ever did one a few campaigns that went into epic levels. And that was more to wrap up a campaign, as opposed to taking on a lot of epic level questing.

The far realm is crazy and would be really hard to portray in any setting. One of the descriptions of the far realm that I once read (I think the 3rd edition planar handbook) stated the far realm was made up of innumerable layers. Each layer had its own rules, physics, ecosystems and so forth. Yet the distance between layers may only be inches or feet apart. It was possible to take a single step and cross between three or four layers. And since it was impossible to determine the properties of one layer from the next. Simply walking could tear you apart and put you back together in weird ways. Their is literally no way to map or figure out how the far realm worked because it keeps changing how it works with each step you take.

Really cool video! I loved the Epic level handbook when it first came out, awesome to see you bring that content into the modern setting👍👍 One small thing, the Epic level handbook actually had optional rules for up to level 40. Most of the focus was 20-30 but they also provided a few different options for going even higher. Now realistically i dont know anyone who took a character past the mid 20s (starting from 1st level) but I definitely created a few level 30+ characters just to marvel at their stats, i know a number of other people who did the same

I'm pretty sure the damage from its head spike is less it stabbing you with its face and more it removing you from existence, a chunk at a time. That, and its Resurrection is the very fabric of time gllitching out at its even existing. 17:36 I can't help but think of a bunch of Uvuudaums being utterly mortified at something petty, like the fact that something being green doesn't also mean that its a surface hot enough to cook a steak on in this plane, like it is in their own little corner of the Far Realm

Awesome work as usual, dude; always a big fan of those old monsters that basically play like an unethical psychiatric experiment for your players. I like the idea that they're mutated humanoids, and that headspike attack absolutely gives me ideas for a Slaad-style implantation/infection that "opens the mind" to their perspective and creates new Uvuudaum. Also, having them as a warlock player's patron could lead to some very interesting plot points down the line.

I think the concept in the "Far Realm" is that the material world, the mortal mind, and even the soul exist in a pressurized environment that keeps things consistent. It's like air, but instead of gasses, it's the intentions of the gods to made a linear universe. To this analogy, the Far Realm is outer space. There is no pressure, and everything left out there just expands wildly. This lack of divine pressure means there is also tremendous power for those who can define it. Basically, you get to define your reality like a god, but you HAVE to do it every second, and without any preconceptions to fall back on. They don't just throw out the rulebook, they throw out language and all understanding of the concept of structure. It's a ragged, endless fevered dream. The Ethereal Realm is sort of like this, but far more settled. It has laws, just weak ones. It's more like a pile of legos the gods use to assemble worlds. Magic is pulled from it, basically stealing these legos for mortal use. To structure a timeline, at first the gods would emerge in, something like, the Far Realms, "The Dark Void before Creation". From that they milled out Ethereal space as building components, and eventual settled worlds and planes from that substance. The Ethereal Plane is ghost-like, because it's almost a reality, but not quite there yet. The Far Realms are a vacuum of zero rules, and your brain/body/soul is a marshmallow. You sort of inflate and turn to mush without an intense will and focus. Every stray thought could grow a new limb or make your head explode. Even death isn't death, as death has no definition. It's a hell of no definition.

I like the idea that a party fails to stop the big bad, a nemesis that has been a thorn in the party's side from day one, from achieving his goals. Only to then witness or secondhand piece together the result when they make the mistake of opening a portal for their master, and a Uvuudaum answers the call. Maybe they all team up to bring it down, or maybe the party sits back with a snack

I think, canonically, the uvuudam was first created when the ancient elves, described in the manual of the planes, breached the boundaries between the great wheel and the far realm. Most of the elves were transformed into the first Kaorti, but the archmage leader of the cabal was transformed into something far, far stranger. This is why it is depicted in the manual of planes artwork, even though the stats do not appear and they are not mentioned specifically, for some reason they didn't plug the epic level handbook in their other splats nearly as much as they did with their other splats, because a 2sentance explanation would have saved me a lot of headache trying to figure out what the hell that thing was back in the day. I never had the epic book until I was much older and got it as a PDF lol

this is just a concept idea i had while learning about the uuvudam, but one of these aforementioned creatures manages to break the barrier between the far and material realms but with everything there's a cost. In fumbling it's way into the material plane the uuvudam lost most if not all of it's reality breaking spell casting abilities which manifest themselves as shards of madness that warp anything and everything around them, they can even find there way into people. The goal of this uuvudam is to reclaim all it's power, obviously sewing chaos along the way and eventually turning the planet into it's own pocket realm of madness. one of these shards can find there way into a player character or an npc allowing them to learn great magics but at the cost of their sanity and the risk of turning into a lumbering pile of flesh, the shards also have a compulsion to be drawn near one another so if someone has it within them they will desire almost to a maddening degree the other shard no matter where they might be. sorry for the crap grammar i didn't feel like going back and correcting all this.

So in my setting, the plane of Mechanus essentially serves as the multiverse's graphics card, running the physics calculations that operate all the planes while using Limbo as an RNG the Far Realm is what happens when planar coordinates generate an index out of bounds exception. Calculations can't be made on values that high, so physics just... stop happening. The rules stop applying. If it can happen, it eventually will. If it can't happen, it damn well will anyway. ...and just like code, the error can *spread*

I like this, and am currently attempting to make an Eldritch Fae/Squid type thing that makes an "Avatar" to walk the worlds of Mortals so as not to accidentally drive the mortals Mad, and twist them. The idea is a spawn of sorts ended up growing a semblance of a "Soul" and a fondness for the fragile mortals of the worlds and actually thought to protect them from the encroaching Madness, and thus spawned more of themselves to help keep open portals closed and stuff. They also do not allow themselves into the Mortal World properly because their mere presence, like this Uvuudaum, warps minds and physically twists their environments. Most of them have similarities, but do not necessarily look like themselves, and their "Avatars" are quite diverse, and usually half warped and twisted, forcing themselves to have to cover the warped parts in one way or another... Like a mask over a face of endless teeth or eyeballs, for one example. Have little idea how to do the stats, but with this I may be able to get a good starting point. Physically they have many chimeric traits and can appear squid/octo-like, with maybe shells, some might have spider legs, are more serpentine, or whatever mad mixture of things you could think of. The two main ones I have are like a Nautilus with a thick, bony Draconic-like skull, and Cuttlefish tendrils/fins. Her Mother is more of a ball of tendrils with Spider legs and too many eyes, and their "Avatars" have no eyes (But can see fine anyways)... It's all still a work in progress. They're my "Sweet little Nightmares", and when pushed... can be all kinds of maddening nightmare material in combat if they have to be. Otherwise they are somewhat open to have all kinds of abilities and appearances to fit a campaign as needed.
