What Happens When Bull Moose Try to Steal Another Bulls Cows?
That is today’s video theme. Some of you know who “Watson” is but for those new to the page/channel, meet Watson! We are convinced he is Mismatch’s son. We first encountered him in 2020. Actually, that is the only year we ever found him. We haven’t seen him since, but there can be many reasons why that we haven’t. Moose move around a lot, and bulls often transition to other areas to live.
Today’s video is a classic, Libby produced it a couple weeks ago, and we hope you enjoy it. Watson is intense, he has more courage than size, more confidence than most bulls his size and he mixes it up with bulls larger than himself. Even just seeing him that one season, we watched him take on a couple different bulls that were much larger than himself. Here he is being his sneaky self.
One last thing, toward the end of the rut in 2020, we watched Mismatch (who we think is his Dad) challenge him to a fight, but on that day, Watson just slowly turned away, declining the invitation. That begs the question, do bull moose know who their “kids” are? Libby and I have discussed and we don’t think they do.

I love watching moose casually moving around...they call camels the ships of the desert but the way moose mover I sometimes think of them as the ships of the taiga.

That's well said, 416dl...they move with such grace, through the muck and bog and muskeg and tundra and hemlocks and krumholtz it's amazing! We have watched moose at a FAST trot blasting his way through tall grasses, across a creek, up a mountainside and into/through alders without breaking stride. Just smooth as silk. Jaw dropping. I like it; ships of the taiga! thanks for the comment and for watching!

Great questions and thank you for the kind comment, IOA. Sometimes it's just easier to listen than it is to read captions. I personally don't like doing captions, but there are those who prefer them. I try to mix it up. Anyway, onward! Watson was probably heading toward 6 at that point. Not old! So he'd only be 9 this summwe. We hope to see him again. They come and go so it's hard, there is a LOT of wilderness in Alaska for them to get lost in. And get hunted in too, sadly. 😟

Yes, it's tough being that age, these young bulls have all it takes but there are more experienced and dominant bulls in the valley that they have a tough time breaking into the game. I imagine he wandered off to another valley where he found his own little group of cows.

@@MooseManNaturePhotos I think I told you about seeing a hugh body bull with only one side that was running away from the fight he was in after loosing his other side. I was so in awe I forgot to take a photo of him. If he would of had 3 brow tines he would of been invited to supper but he only had two which was illegal in my area.

We didn't see anyone get over on Grumpy when he was on his throne (...woods) down in his range, but we DID see a young bull (3 ½ year old) who managed to snag one of Swagger's cows a few years back. That was funny. (That young bull was a 4x4!!! We think he was a son of King James. Haven't seen him since.) Named him Lucky...ahem...
