Snowpacalypse 2010 was pretty insane! I had snow up to my door handles on my Toyota 4Runner. Also, being a fireman here in DC, I can tell you that it's extremely challenging to drive fire trucks here when the snow gets deeper than a 12''. Great point on the snow removal infrastructure here too. There's simply not enough equipment or personnel to handle the 'major' snow events we get every few years. I'd say it's also important to note that the folks driving the snow trucks are doing their best but they just don't have very much experience with big snow removal operations. So visitors may think 'the drivers don't know what they're doing'. If you are here during a 'Code Red' event, be patient and enjoy DC as a ghost town! It can be a pretty special experience!

Hey Ryan - thanks for sharing your experiences as a firefighter! Lots of people here root for "code red" events in the hope of getting the day off work, but you rightly point out many of the challenges that come along with them as well.

Snow is fine as long as I don't have to drive in it. When it snowed 2 inches last week they predicted it was just gonna be a "light dusting", the streets were not pre-treated and my morning commute was a white knuckle driving extravaganza

Yeah that early season snow caught a lot of us off guard!

Should the WMATA subway do their cold weather plan on code red
@TripHacksDC6 жыл бұрын
WMATA has specific requirements for the snow plan. www.wmata.com/rider-guide/weather/rail.cfm "Code Red" is not an official thing. I made it up for this video.

OPM has changed our guidelines, if the Federal government buildings are closed and we do have a telework agreement, we still have to login and work from home. OPM is trying to ensure that services aren't disrupted even though we can't physically be in the building.

Don't try to buy milk in DC when it snows: us natives buy up the grocery store in panicked prep for the zombie apocalypse, even if the snow reaches only two inches.

Tanya Fox It’s because the snow is more inconsistent here than anywhere else in the nation. You never know whether or not its going to fall as snow or rain because we always straddle around 32. Since 2009 we’ve either had way below or way above average snow every year.
