I've replaced the purge valve 3x,s in less than a year in my 01 Hyundai Accent because of the three times I force-fed my tank when fueling up, not realizing I was the cause of the problem. Thanks for the info. I'm sure that Auto Zone will be happy not having to honor their warranty on purge valves!

Listen to this man and avoid a useless expense . I have a 2006 Chevrolet Impala which I overfilled every time. It took a long time but eventually the gasoline dissolved some charcol in the canister and plugged up the hose to the check valve. When this happens the car will not accept gasoline at all. As I did not know about how this system worked, I found out the hard way. The repair shop started at the wrong end of the problem which eventually cost me $880 and two trips to the shop before it would accept fuel again. Listen to what he says and do not overfill your tank. I don't know why car sales people do not tell you this.

also, I wouldn't let my tank get below 1/4th full. The fuel pump (very expensive to replace) uses your fuel that it sits in to cool it down from it's motor. If it gets to low, it can heat up more than normal. When you fill it up on or near an empty tank, the thermal shock can possibly damage it. Nearly $1000 to replace (part and labor) if it eventually fails.

Me bad! And yes I'm over 70 years old. I top off ALL the time. 10 year old Hyundai Sonata V6 with over 100,000 miles. Never an MIL light and the car delivers the same fuel economy today as it did when new. Ditto on a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan with over 50,000 miles on it. That sucker will take another $10 worth of gasoline after automatic shut-off. Once again, no MIL lights and fuel economy is the same as when new. I've topped off for over 50 years of driving on Ford, GM, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia vehicles. Not sure when these canisters were introduced but I've yet to experience a problem from overfilling. Perhaps my vehicles have guardian angels!

Me too. I don't overfill to the point to where the gasoline is coming out of the tank but I still pumping some more gas even after the handle shuts off the first. I've always done this since I was old enough to drive and never had any trouble
@ryans4133 жыл бұрын
The canister collects gas fumes if the canister gets filled with gas the charcoal can’t absorb those fumes and the gas tank could start to have too much pressure build up and that will set a check engine light. Kinda like leaving a gas can in the hot sun without the breather tap pulled. Plus the EVAP system also send some those fumes back to the engine to be burned in with the combustion or vents them out to the atmosphere so you can really mess the system up by overfilling
@bernardhaller37543 жыл бұрын
Hmm another person getting it wrong. yes you should not over fill your gas tank, but automotive engineers design gas tanks which will let out gas before the tank is full. gas tanks are designed to be filled to about 90% capacity in the other 10% is the expansion area where the gas overflow and the return line of the charcoal canister. it is almost impossible to reach it unless someone has blocked off the overflow hose or has been tampered with. i don't advise overfilling the tank because it will end up on the ground and that is a waste.

Interesting choice for demonstration. And I don't mean the old car, I mean what it does. If you are driving on a road trip, or just all day in your car, the expansion cavity will be emptied after topping off long before any problem from heat expansion.

Exactly! This post does not deal with people on a road trip and not leaving a high fuel level over time in a hot climate.. If you're going to tell a story, tell the whole story.

I have a habit of overfilling my tank even after the pump trips shut. Just as you've mentioned, my engine check light is on. And vehicle diagnostics tells that my EVAP system of "shut". I drive a Honda civic 2016. How do I get this fixed. I promise not to overfill my tank again😁😁😁

This is most interesting. Why on earth would any, and I mean any, vehicle manufacturer leave such a huge design fault as that on a vehicle ... Hmmmm? Why would even the government allow a flaw like this to exist - that is, something that will destroy emission control and so on. You wouldn't, surely, leave something that is prone to such misuse on a vehicle. The public would not know not to do this. When you buy a new vehicle, you are not warned about this. My vehicle manual does not tell me not to do this. Yet, it seems, that this is a very expensive habit that is going to destroy your vehicle and the only people telling you not to do it is KZbin people.

I hear what you're saying but dont they have a fail safe for us idiots who will continue to do this? I mean the gas runs out if over filled, but it's only at the filler neck. I'm sure engineers have solved the back flow issue in newer cars. I've done it at least 5 times in my jeep and no issues.

I always like to fill it until I can see it, and that the only to get accurate gas mileage (which is usually better than what the computer in the dash says it is). Unfortunately my 2019 F-150 has one of those stupid capless fillers and it extremely difficult to fill it past the cutoff, so I don’t go past the next even dollar on that one which means I will never know the true gas mileage on that one.
