For tai lung it’s not just his father not accepting him. It’s not that he was egotistical. His entire childhood was wasted on an unattainable dream that was promised to him. When po was chosen, shifu constantly questioned oogway at every turn and tried to get po to quit at every corner. However when Tai lung was denied, he didn’t question Oogway, he didn’t try to teach tai lung to make him more qualified to be dragon warrior. He gave up on him.

Probably didn't help that Shifu not only raised him from a baby, but also literally named him "Great Dragon" AND gave him personal hands-on training to help him improve, both of which (unintentionally) fueled his sense of entitlement, and that Dragon Warrior rejection was likely the first major rejection he'd received since being abandoned as a cub (read: likely too young to remember). Nux tries to argue that Tigress had the more mature response to the rejection, but the man has CLEARLY not delved into her backstory that explains she not only WASN'T raised by Shifu from infancy like Tai Lung was, but in fact was an eight-ish-year-old who had uncontrollable and severe violent episodes that caused all the other kids at the ORPHANAGE she lived at to avoid her like the plague when Shifu first took her in, meaning she was USED to rejection in general long before trying out for Dragon Warrior. Comparing the behavior of a hothouse flower to that of a person who spent their childhood fully believing themselves a lost cause before they were given the help they needed is very much an "apples and oranges" situation.

There's a few reasons why people find Tai Lung so sympathetic. The first is how vague his crime was. They always say he rampaged through the valley but they never actually mention a body count or how much damage he actually did. For all we know his crime was just a lot of property damage followed by attempted theft. In comparison Lord Shen (the second movie's villain) is known for killing almost all Pandas in an attempted genocide. The second reason is how horrific the punishment he got was. Constantly chained up and paralyzed for 2 decades straight. That prison was the definition of civil rights violations. Literally a fate worse than death in my opinion. The third reason is the simple fact that Tai Lung never goes for the kill when fighting the Furious Five. He easily could've slaughtered them but he doesn't even really hurt them tbh. Part of that is likely a flex but they were actively trying to kill him. So you've gotta give him a little credit for being so merciful. The fourth reason is that his backstory is genuinely tragic. People think Tai Lung cracked when Oogway denied him the title of Dragon Warrior. But in his flashback it's clear that what really broke him was that Shifu didn't even try to argue about it. Shifu raised him to be the dragon warrior. He gave him a name that meant Great Dragon. Tai Lung was willing to train until his bones broke, not because he wanted more power or a title, but because becoming the Dragon Warrior would make his dad proud. So it's only natural that seeing Shifu cave so easily would shatter him emotionally. It's worth noting that even with all these factors making him seem sympathetic, Tai Lung still is a villain. The darkness inside him was genuine, but it was largely the result of how Shifu raised him. Shifu had him focus all his time and energy on growing stronger. He also didn't have comrades to fight alongside like the furious five so it's only natural that he'd become solitary and start to view strength as the most important thing in life.

@submariNervous2 ай бұрын
THANK you! I mentioned this elsewhere, but I'll say it again here: In Secrets of the Furious Five, it's explained that before Shifu took Tigress in, she was living in an orphanage and her then-uncontrollable strength (understandably) scared the other kids and caused her to be rejected by everyone around her, and this went on for YEARS. By the time Shifu adopted her, she had grown to accept, and honestly probably even *expect* rejection from those around her, calling herself a monster. For Tigress, the Dragon Warrior rejection was really more just a case of "disappointing but not world-shattering". Compare and contrast Tai Lung, who could almost be considered a "hothouse flower", meaning a person who is either physically or emotionally fragile due to having been sheltered or coddled throughout their life. The constant stream of affection and approval from Shifu (and likely the admiration of folks in the valley) led to him having never experienced a meaningful rejection before then (not counting the whole "being abandoned outside the Jade Palace as an infant" thing), and in turn meant he wouldn't have thought to ask questions about what he was lacking in that CAUSED that rejection, or consider that he could always try again later. To him it would have been, dare I say, a sucker-punch, and what would anyone's first response to getting sucker-punched be, ESPECIALLY when the person who raised you just lets it happen? Getting ANGRY. Honestly you'd have better luck finding similarities between an ACTUAL tigress and snow leopard than Tigress and Tai Lung. XD

21:15 i feel like the main argument is that nux views Tai Lung of seeing more. Past what he was literally raised to. If you give a man a fish will it learn to hunt? No. Thats something that must be instilled, desired, humored at least. None of which were brought up with Tai Lung and all of which were kept in check with Tigres. Nux's argument is that yes Tai lung is egotistical and yes he is very much the antagonist but its against the fact that thats all he could keep hold of. The pride in the destiny that was told to be his from the moment he knew how to fight. Take that pride away and whats left? Something new? Who taught Tai Lung that? Shifu didn't. Oogway didn't. Who would teach Tai Lung better? That there was something more. No one.
@insnpottoXD3 ай бұрын
I feel like people are completely missing one key thing in understanding Tai Lung, and it’s that Shifu had kept telling him that he would become the Dragon Warrior as long as he kept training hard every day. But then he finds out that he still isn’t good enough and that apparently he would never be good enough. But that’s not the problem, the problem is Shifu never taught Tai Lung how to deal with failure and disappointment. He never taught Tai Lung humility or how to be humble. He was always told he was the best and that he would succeed. Shifu failed Tai Lung as a teacher and as a father. And when Tai Lung was in prison, Shifu never once went to visit Tai Lung to try to talk with him, probably out of shame. I honestly don’t think Tai Lung was completely wrong, he was just misguided and unprepared.
@d1videbyz3r03 ай бұрын
This sums it up perfectly. Shifu's destiny was to train the dragon warrior. It filled him with pride. He molded Tai Lung in the image of his own dream and put that on his own son. Shifu filled Tai Lung with his dreams, not letting Tai Lung figure out his own dreams. That's why that line hits so hard. Shifu pride made him believe Tai Lung was the dragon warrior and in turn as his son, Tai Lung believed it too. With no preparation for a reality where that wasn't the case.

I would argue that Death is still a villain, partly because he's cheating by trying to claim Puss's last life early and he knows it, but also because his issue starts with the fact that as a cat Puss has nine lives. He feels like that is unnatural and so he dislikes cats, in a world where it's apparently natural to them. So targeting Puss for not appreciating the value of life is also a selfish endeavor where he got to be unnatural to what he decided was unnatural, which is also why he's not initially pleased with the change. Puss not appreciating life just gave him a convenient excuse to decide to take direct action. His frustration with Puss being careless with the lives he'd had is relatable for sure, because I'm pretty sure that we've all been frustrated with people who take an amazing gift for granted. But that doesn't make him right and still makes him an amazing villain.

Also, I feel like what he means by “right” in that video is more like “right in their reasoning” not necessarily their actions themselves. Take Tai Lung. He was raised by shifu to be a great kung fu warrior and filled him with the ambition and desire to become the dragon warrior. When he was denied that title, his father and master turned his back on him. In their final fight in the movie it’s made clear that Tai Lung only really desired the approval of his mentor, as we see for a brief moment after shifu apologizes to and tells tai lung he was proud he pauses his attacks and just stands there, finally hearing the words he wanted to hear. But he knows it was as too late for him, he knew he had gone too far. So he continues his rampage For Tai Lung, all he wanted was the approval of his father figure and for him having the scroll would be what made shifu proud. He was right in wanting to make his father proud, not right in this rampage.

My favorite, "The villain was right" story is the Overlord (video game) series. Written by Terry Pratchet's daughter. The heroes beat the villain. The heroes then become villains later. So the Overlord exists to finish off whoever wins the fight between villain and hero, because they're going to screw up everything either way.

I think Nux was wrong about Tai Lung... Nux is not considering one thing and the most important thing about his character... his common sense are not normal. He was specifically raised to be a dragono warrior, his whole life he was taught to become the dragon warrior, so for him being a dragon warrior is everything, in his mind it's the obvious goal for his life yet when the time comes he was said to be not worth the title and the person who shaped his personality and life to becoming one didn't said anything. Oogway saw Tai Lung's ambition and ego but that was how Shifu raised him, Shifu was the one who installed the ambition of becoming a dragon warrior to him and the ego that his is talented and above his peers. As for Tigress, she was like Experiment No 2. everything that Shifu learned not to do with Tai Lung was avoided for Tigress growth so they didnt have the same kind of learning experience growing up, she was raised more properly. A good example would be Dabi from My Hero. He was literally raised the same way as Tai Lung and at the end (at least on his pov) he taught his father abandoned him. Now he became a villain to 'prove his worth and those people are wrong'. He wants people he cared about to look his way. Nux's dad med school analogy isn't really right. The difference is with his example, the dad lets his son dream and then shattered that dream. while Tai Lung has his 'dad' install that dream to him then shatters it. One let the son dream, the other spoon fed the dream to his son.

"Heroes are reactive and villains are proactive" not neccessarily. Do the villains usually want to change the status quo and, thus, are proactive? Yes! But then, If the status quo is a bad one, wouldn't the hero be the proactive one? V for Vendetta kinda stuff

Another "villain" that is fun. Amos Slade from Fox and The Hound. He's an old hunter who lives alone by himself with his two dogs. A random fox is on your property, so you try and shoot it. Only later do you find out it was your neighbors pet. Then that same fox gets one of your dogs hit by a train... yeah, I'd hunt it down, too.

Tai lung was used as a social experiment by Oogway so that Shifu would learn humility and become a better kung fu master so that when he chose the true dragon warrior, that would be his successor, he could actually train him properly. Guess what that makes Oogway the real bad guy in this situation. Think about it. Shifu is so devoted to his master that when he said Tai Lung was unworthy Shifu even after a decade and a half of being a father chose to abandon his child and turn away from him. That’s a sycophantic level of devotion. Do you really think that Oogway could not have rolled up and said “hey you’re being a terrible master ” to steer him down the proper path instead of shaking his head in the background and saying nothing for over a decade. The only rational justification is that he wanted things to play out in the specific way and sacrifices a child to make it happen.

Death was in the right because puss in boots was literally WASTING his 9 lives and death was sick of it so he thought he’d save puss the trouble and end his final life and then puss like a coward wanted to literally WISH for more lives until he realised he shouldn’t want more lives and instead should continue living the one he has without wasting it (death is also my favourite character in puss in boots the last wish and all 3 villains were awesome and it’s impressive how dreamworks managed to SUCCESSFULLY do multiple villains like jack was unapologetically a heartless jerk and then Goldie locks and the 3 bears were really funny especially the 3 bears and especially papa bear and then death was so awesome and threatening and I loved his whistling)

Rafigi said it best "oh yes, the past can hurt.... But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it" Another outcome from the hero and villain clashing is a common enemy appears forcing the hero and villain to work together, putting aside their own ideals for the sake of the world they live in. A great example of this is in pokemon the movie 2000, yes team rocket wants to steal Ash's Pikachu but they realize that that goal means nothing if the world is destroyed. So they use their expertise in making contraptions to help ash save the world.

This video skimmed over something about Doofenshmirtz that’s really important to his character arc. His daughter Vanessa pointed it out to him in the original series finale: he’s not evil, just a good man pretending to be evil. He just didn’t know it. He had been wronged so many times in his past that he felt like he had to be the villain. He saw no other path. That’s why, as the series became more fleshed out over time, we see him treat his role as the bad guy as more of a job and Perry as a work friend. What Doof didn’t know was that all of the tragedy shaped him into a good man. He had a horrible childhood, so he worked hard to make Vanessa’s childhood a good one.

Another example could be Garou from the One Punch Man anime. He was a human who called himself a monster and was known by the heroes as a "Hero Hunter". Except Garou was fighting for himself, not even other monsters. He was just sick and tired of the villains losing all the time, even though some villains have ideal reasons as to why they are villains.
