I’ve got a guess on why the starter Pokémon are outside your character’s house in the void. I assume it’s something similar the first two Paper Mario games, where objects are stored in the void so they can be loaded in during a cutscene. This probably means the Pokémon are probably stored there so the game can load the Pokémon you chose in order to play the cutscene where you take it to see your mom and Meowth.

I was about to mention that. For those who don’t know, It’s easier (and very common) for game developers to have assets loaded but hidden outside of the player's view and warp it in when it’s required. Trying to place a model out of nowhere on command can be a little... messy to say the least.

i think an interesting thing to try (in a single game or all of them!) is, if you leave town without choosing a starter and trigger a rival battle event, what starter would they have? since their starter depends on which one you picked! i've experimented a lot with dppt glitches but never thought to try this... for example, leaving town in pokemon heartgold/soulsilver (and possibly catching a regular pokemon or using a code to generate a random pokemon in the pc box), then passing over the tiles in cherrygrove city that trigger the rival battle with silver. if you have a normal pokemon in your party, i'd assume the battle would load correctly, but i wonder what starter he'd be given!

I know this comment is two years old, but I have an answer for this, at least for Gold/Silver: he takes the middle Pokémon. You don’t get to see it in battle since those games won’t let you get into a battle at all, like Pokétips covered in Part 2, but when you go back to see Elm, only the middle Pokéball is missing.

If you're ever wondering why stuffs just in strange places like in sun and moon, they're kind of like placeholders. It's used to save on memory - lots of games do it so they don't have to spawn in new assets, they can just move them around instead when they're needed.

About the pokemon in the void in Sun/Moon At one point in the game, there's a short animated cutscene of sorts where your starter gets to met your mom's Meowth. A common thing for game devs to do is to store character models for a cutscene out of bounds in the actual scene so that when the cutscene comes up, they only have to move the model instead of instantiate a new one

I think I know what happened when you walked though walls in Sun and Moon. It’s mapping is a tad different, most likely because it’s a 3d game not a 2d game so the assets for the house where the only things loaded in because you didn’t leave the house the normal way so the map could load properly. That’s why everything is black. You can see the interior of the house as well as the bit of the outside you can see from your porch. The three starters are there for the future cutscene when you take your starter home and they interact with your mother and her Meowth. The starter models are stored out of bounds so that later they can just be teleported into the room when you begin the cutscene.

I know this is super duper late, but I believe the starters are in the Sun and Moon void because of Kukui's visit AFTER you get a starter. The starter you chose appears in your house then, so the game probably just warps the starter you chose into the house for that and keeps the other two in the void. Since you can choose, it keeps all three out there until it knows which one is yours.

One day, someone on the Pokemon team is going to put in some kind of result of somehow entering a battle without any Pokemon and that'll be the end of glitch hunting stuff like this xD Personally, I'd love to see one of two things happen: 1 - The wild Pokemon attacks you, knocking you out and causing you to be taken to the last/closest Pokemon Center you visited (or your house). 2 - Another wild Pokemon appears and either chases the original wild one away, fights it automatically or they both run off after one another, ending the battle. Whilst I'm all for the whole 'game tries desperately to figure out what to do, shoving out a mass of glitch' thing, it's odd that Game Freak haven't put in some kind of countermeasure for having no Pokemon when battling, given the fandom's propensity for trying to do so and managing it xD

In Crystal Clear, well... without using hacks, you cannot do this at all because you get a starter as soon as you pick 'New Game'. Though, if somehow, one could hack the Starter Ball to make it so that the Pokémon could escape... I wouldn't know. That would be a question for Shockie.

Not sure if any other comment already explained, but pre-placing models off-screen is a popular trick devs use when making games. Most tricks in programming are for saving either memory or time. When the game wants to show you one of those pokemon, all it has to do is move the model with no memory loading required. So in this case, the developers are saving loading time at the cost of some spare memory it seems.

In pokemon sun and moon, the starter models are in the void because void is where the game stores models that are already loaded but not in use, such as the starters.

The reason why the starters were placed outside the house (in the house map) is because after you get your Pokémon in Iki Town, when you walk home to your house you introduce the starter Pokémon to your mom. They are basically stored outside so they are ready to be used later for the small cutscene

You know what? This is super old so it probably doesn’t matter and I bet somebody’s already said this, but I THINK the Alola starters might be under your house because of the cutscene where you introduce your starter of choice to your mom? It’s super common for games to place entities needed for cutscenes in the void under the area they need show up in so it’s easier to call them up when cutscenes get loaded. Maybe there’s a similar logic going on here?

i do believe the starter pokemon in the void are actually for the cutscenes for when you return back to your house when you first get your starter pokemon, and it just stores them there for safe keeping and uses the starter pokemon that you choose for that cutscene.

Thought about it, the Starter Pokemon are in the void near your house because I believe there are scenes where your starter pokemon interacts around your house? Same with meowth, its so that the models can be called easily from a close location that can't be seen. Think of it as, a Piranha Plant going up and down a Pipe, even when its not visible, it still exists somewhere on the map, ready to be called back into position when its time to rise up again, the same is probably also true for Meowth when he is off screen.

What I would like to know in Gen 5. If you give yourself a Pokemon, thats not the Starter, what Starters will Cheren and Bianca have. The Alolastarter are just stored there for the Cutscene.
