What happens when you miss the fuel boat?! 😩 | BOAT LIFE [Ep 133]

This weeks adventure is a long one. After waiting on the fuel boat to stock up on coal supplies for my multifuel/ log burner. I then single hand my narrowboat up lots of canal locks from Stone to Barlaston. My friend Nikki's engine stalls in a lock as she runs out of diesel. I go and visit the amazing World of Wedgwood famous for it's pottery and have a lovely Rum Coffee in the 6 towns distillery. While cruising I chat about the history and reason why James Brindley and Josiah Wedgwood built the Trent and Mersey Canal. I also get to meet another solo female boater.

Enjoyed Wedgwood factory. My late mom collected wedgewood her whole life ! (Unfortunately not very long She passed at 48 with the big C !😢) My dad used to buy her a different piece for each of their anniversaries and birthdays for the 22 years they were married. My sister Jacqui inherited the collection and added to the collection but unfortunately also passed at the young age of 57 also the dreaded big C. I have a great magnet which I’ve shown many times but unfortunately with 2 boats behind me heading up the locks, I didn’t have time to moor and try to locate it plus the lock would have been emptied and filled so many times it could be anywhere

Blown away by Michelle's talent. My dad, who was a cartographer, could do oil paintings, but his forte was what is referred to as scratchboard. I remember seeing him using a cartographer's loupe to do the fine details on whatever he was working on, so I can see and appreciate the amount of craft that Michelle is doing. He managed to sell some of his original works which were small (8"x10") of endangered species, such as the Snow Leopard, to companies who bought art as a tax write-off back in the early eighties for £800 a pop.

Many years ago used to go to the BT training center in Stone when I was working on a BT satellite earth station in Herefordshire. Actually experienced a minor earthquake while in the training center. There was a pub just outside the training center called 'The Labour In Vain' Which became controversial a few years ago as it was based on a woman trying to scrub a black child white. Not politically correct nowadays. Thanks for the memories! Previously lived in caravans, converted a 41 seater coach and lived on a sailing catamaran. Sadly geriatric and bricks and mortar now as an investment for my descendants. Keep up the good work!

I went to the Wedgwood Factory when I was about 10 years old. I was lucky to have some pocket money to buy a souvenir. I bought a black urn. To me it was for flowers for my mom. I had to witness the black urn on a shelf in an alcove for years. It now reminds me of funeral ware. Fortunately I left it behind but still remember the piece. 😂😂😂

Some years ago we moored near the Star at Stone and went in the pub which was packed with boaters celebrating a 50 year birthday.The birthday turned out to be one of the boaters parrot.That was in the day when all the the boaters used to congregate in the pub at night.Happy times.

Pleasantly surprised seeing you go through my home town of Stone. Walked many miles along those tow paths over the years. Many years ago, my old boss, who was a coal merchant, used to tell me stories about the times when they used to transport coal from the pits to the yard in Stone in horse pulled boats. He was only a young boy at the time, being early 1900's, it was his fathers business, who had been doing it since the mid 1800's, but he would be working from early hours till late at night by the time they unloaded and stabled up the horse. It sounded extremely hard work. Different times eh !

The Wedgewood history is so interesting! I work at the Rose Creek Mine in Franklin North Carolina, and it’s been in operation nearly 72 years. We have two kinds of clay here, and they use to sell it to Wedgewood, with which they made their fine China. Our Mine also has Star Garnets, and it’s so much fun watching the Kids and Rockhounds find treasures in our dirt. We also find two thousand year old shards of Cherokee Pottery!

I've got to tell you that your dad is absolutely correct about not letting your fuel get down to the very bottom of the tank. For the very reasons he has explained. I have spent 27 years with Castrol and I can tell you that he is correct. I might also add that you have cut my attention on KZbin as being a most fascinating intriguing and mesmerizing middle age lady. I am 80 years old and my wife passed 5 years ago. However, I have introduced you to my youngest daughter who is now 47 who has labeled you an absolute spaz which is an great compliment coming from her because she too is an absolute spaz. The comment about "not letting your tank get too low because..." is an old wives tale, truth is your pickup in the tank is at the bottom, so it would draw in whatever is at the bottom anyway, best keep the tank no lower than half full as A:- you don't know when you can top up again, and B:- by keeping a good level you have the fuel sloshing around thus mixing up all the sludge at the bottom and drawing it through the system, where it gets removed by the fuel filter, thus keeping the sludge to a minimum. Great channel, I'll watch more from now on, keep up the good work. Cheers!

Not on boats I’m afraid … the pick up is about an inch and half from the bottom but yes you are correct about the fuel filter and I change mine twice a year …. We are prone to diesel bug on boats and that’s caused when we let it for low and being in the cold water condensation forms with the steel and causes water in the fuel tank …. I bought a boat which had 90l of diesel, i pumped it out, and over three days i removed thirty litres by settling and with additive. I try to syphon of a few litres from bottom every year, its generally some watery mix.

The danger with canal diesel is that the base is flat, amd sludge can be stirred up when on rivers, just where you dont want the engine to die

A salty water boat is subject to more turbulence, so a double filter is a much bettet idea. Especially with a Volvo Penta DAMHIK

I live in Stoke and my bit of advice while cruising through stoke is ...don't stop , keep going cause if your boat had wheels, you wouldn't have them by time you got tuther side.😊 hahaha. As you say you never know whats going to happen next day to day. And glad to see Bonny is helping you do the gates! Next is to see if she can cope with the paddles, but take it a stage at a time eh!! That watercolour of Bonny is very special, can't wait to see it when finished, will have to be patient. My old Dad was an amazing artist and during quiet spells in the War he painted and sketched, his drawings of Churchill and Monty (just to name 2) are stunning, but then in peacetime he never took it up again, a great waste of a special talent. I'm not great at portraits but landscapes and particularly skies are, well, not at all bad. Since the age of 8 I've worked in watercolours and Indian ink as well as pencil. Never thought of selling any but I did a couple of years ago when a friend who has a lovely shop said "we could sell this watercolour" and so it sold to a couple who fell in love with it. Nice to think its being appreciated rather than languishing in a drawer eh. I do admit to giving a few away, Its all about sharing if they will be loved.

Really enjoyed this weeks vlog. Especially seeing Stone as I lived there before moving to the USA 20 years ago. Always used to take my three kids to watch the boats go through the lock. Back in the day the building across from the Star was a tea shop, so it was great to get ice creams and sometimes help operate the gates. My kids loved it. We visited Stone and the locks last year. A great trip down memory lane. Keep warm!

Hi Heidi you need to get a top hat for your chimney then rivet it on it save the rain from coming in. Great to see Bonny staying aboard when your doing the gates

Heidi, as another person said, about your chimney cap, is to get a chain put on between your chimney cap and chimney, so you won't loose the cap again,. Love your videos, keep the brilliant work going,

Yes singlehanding a lock takes twice as long as when two do it, i often explain this to hire boaters who then offer to help me!

Heidi A short piece of light chain screwed to the chimney and to the cap will make it hard to loose the cap. Just a thought from me to you but dont tell anyone else i said it just to my favorite pirate. Have a great day stay safe and watch out for lock JISS. Ed 40 S of Vegas

We used to play on the Ashton canal at windhole 4 where the railway went over the canal and the canal went over the river Medlock.. Known to us kids as the 7 Wonders. Ginger Knut fell in the Cut and frightened all the fishes, one jumped up and gobbled him up, and was the end of Ginger Knut. It was cruel when it was about a ginger head person usually a lad. Kids can be cruel and not know it at the time. I down loaded the canal app and my Samsung and iPad , and it’s wicked, and I’m in Perth Aus. Have you come across waltzing Matilda boat doing pizzas.
