We did a calculation on how many plants needed to make one meal. We figured 6 plants produced 2cups of beans =one meal. For sustainability you’d need about 800 bean plants for a years worth of beans to eat once or twice a week depending on your family size.

Green beans to can you need less, but figuring what your family eats per week will let you know how many of each plant you will need for sustainability. This goes for tomatoes and what you use/week; i.e. tomato sauce, salsa, ketchup, hot sauce, etc. Growing potatoes and yams and other root crops are good for long term, but can you store them or can them??

I planted some dry pinto beans, store bought. Had great success AND discovered my favorite green beans are fresh snapped pinto beans before the beans mature! Great vid!

I was always under the misconception that store bought beans couldn't be planted! I never experimented. Thanks for this enlightening info! I also agree with your statement about prepping & sustainability. That's why my definition of prepper incorporates alot more than most.

I think most of us have believed that store bought beans wouldn’t germinate. It seems to be going quite well

New friend here, I'm debs. I have never thought top plant store bought beans but I'm interested in seeing how it goes. Love red beans and rice and always keep some roux in the fridge for gumbo and other Louisiana good eats that I like to make. The garden area is very nice. The marigolds look lovely!

Those beans are looking great. We're about to get our first heavy frost Sunday night. Which is a little late this year, but I won't complain about that.

New friend here. I'm in NW Arkansas. Love your raised bed. I do that here cause of a mole problem here. Little critters do so much damage but I found a way around it here.
@BroussardHomestead3 жыл бұрын
We just started having moles a couple years ago, but the main reason for our raised beds is bad clay soil. Thanks for coming over!

It will be cool to see what you harvest on those beans. I have always wondered if the yield we worth the space required to grow them, for a home garden anyway lol

@@BroussardHomestead So sorry to hear about y'all getting the big 19! Glad to see y'all still with us. Can you share a few details about the bean harvest, please? How long it took planting to harvest? Ect.. Thanks

Do the beans need a climbing thing? Yes I’m as green as Gumby when it comes to this. Any recommendations on this subject for dummies😊?

Some beans are bush beans and some are pole beans. It’s hard to know which variety they are unless you buy from a seed store.

My question would be if the seeds from the grocery are hybred and what you would actually get? But hey if you're hungry and can't find seeds...
