I’m reminded of two very old videos of Modric. One is from Croatian TV where an old lady roots through his thick hair to check if he really does have eyes in the back of his head, because, even at that time in his career, it was too uncanny and often noted by Croatian media, his spooky awareness of where players behind him were positioned and were about to do, seemingly without looking. The other video is from the documentary filmmaker Pavle Balenovic’s short film about wolf attack in the Velebit mountains (in the Dinaric alps) which shows 5 year old Modric on the craggy mountainside calmly moving a whole herd of colorful goats. Each of the goats were bigger, stronger, and faster than him, but he looks so unperturbed surrounded by them and he’s somehow directing them. With that early childhood experience tracking goats, Modric probably doesn’t need to look as much or for as long as others do mentally capture the position and momentum of any crafty “goats” on the field. 😅

For the first video, I finally found it on KZbin: Luka Modrić - portreti "Vatrenih", Robert Knjaz. For the second video, you can just search on KZbin for the filmmaker’s name, Pavle Balenović, and it’s his most popular video: Wolf Attack Sequence | Napad vukova | Velebit. Additionally, there is a FIFA captains clip on KZbin that includes even more B-roll of Luka Modrić herding goats and other animals from the filmmaker that he cut out of his wolf documentary: Modric reveals his story of growing up in a warzone | Captains on FIFA+.

I love the content. You mentioned that higher scan rate equals more forward passes. I think it's slightly misleading. I believe it's more accurate to say that a higher scan rate allows you to more frequently recognize opportunities for forward passes. There's no guarantee that each time you receive the ball there would be an opportunity for a good forward pass, it's possible that the passing lanes just might be closed at that moment. However scanning frequently allows you to spot the forward pass opportunities that you would have missed if you scanned less frequently.

i remember the first time realising this skill exists when watching ozil in his first world cup. tried applying it to a class match and ended up getting slide tackled from the other way because i'm not scanning. just turning my head around without thinking. lol. too much things to think of in a split second.

I don’t know why people don’t consider how Kdb was fighting an injury during ucl/title race
@RyanGichuki-rw7xw Жыл бұрын
You underrate the kind of opposition they were facing I think. Both faced top defenders and interceptors. The opposition defenders also scan to intercept a pass. The quality of the teams made it difficult to perform the same level

So I get why they scan so much because they are in the centre of the field, can we get a detailed analysis of scanning for wingers?

It shouldn’t be too different. Scan before you get the ball. Midfielders look for passes, as a winger you look for the space to run into, or scan for opportunities to turn your defender

If we're making a case for kdb not deserving that motm then it should've been Camavinga
@collinsbico Жыл бұрын
as a huge kdb fan I know he didn't have his most stellar performance but no one in that match did. I agree Camavinga might've deserved it by a small margin but its a tough choice and at the moment even I thought it sounded like total madness that kdb got motm but looking back I think he was the most dangerous man on the pitch that day, he found spaces in the box when not even haaland could do that and in a very close game like that he was given space from distance and didn't waste the chance to score the equalizer which I think changed the tie completely to make his team regain confidence after conceding. That would be my case for kdb deserving the motm that night.

Scanning is very important as it helps the player to determine the most opportune time to pass, and other things, but hitting the ball to pass is entirely different. Just a slight change in angle when hitting the ball can make it a 'terrible" pass. Players are human at the end of the day.

The reason why their stats were not great in that particular match is because of the quality of the opposition.

This is important but its not the point of the game nor its their job. Their job as a mid fielder is to make the play.

But does the scan of a player entirely depends on him? You said before that you should scan between touches or when the ball is already traveling to you after you assess the balls power and direction. But what if your teammates stand on the ball so much? What if the ball is so close to their feet that it doesn't give you enough time to scan? Doesn't that affect your overall scan rate but isn't really your fault?
@QuanNguyen-og6pq Жыл бұрын
It comes to understanding your teammates. If your teammate is a defender and likes to hold the ball for a longer time, then you can do quick scans while he's holding the ball. If your teammate is a winger and likes to explode in unpredictable directions, then you'd better watch what he's gonna do when he has the ball.
