What Happens When You Take All the Air Out of Lays? Shrinking Potato Chip Bags in a Vacuum Chamber

In this video I put potato chip bags (Lays, Doritos, Fritos) in my vacuum chamber to show you how much empty space there actually is in potato chip bags. First I put the chips in the vacuum chamber and let the bags explode. But then I show a cool trick where I poke a hole in the bag and then slowly let the vacuum suck out all the air from the bag. Then when I let the air back in the atmosphere crushes the potato chip bags in the vacuum chamber!

I have taken out all crisps from the bag and weight them.. no air was bought!! Actually, the bag of crisps on a plane phenomenon is a lot more interesting than that. It is true that the atmospheric pressure will crush the bag of crisps if there are tiny holes in the package, however If you start your journey in a place at sea level and fly over to a place at a higher altitude the pressure inside the bag of crisps will actually be greater than the atmospheric pressure at the higher altitude location, causing the bag to puff up. I imagine this is due to the crisps being sealed at greater atmospheric pressure (sea level) than the destination's one.

I would like to see more high pressure chamber experiments, It would have been nice if you could build a chamber that can withstand more than 2 bars. Check how high the temperaturę needs to be to boil water at higher pressures, test other liquids like liquid butane or liquid nitrogen, I dont know if its possible but it would be awesome to see how things are in 50 or more atmospheres.

The reason chip bags are full of air is to protect them from getting crushed during shipping. And it's actually not air, as air would make the chips stale. Its nitrogen gas, which helps keep the chips more fresh. The reason pringles doesn't "sell air" is because the way they package the chips, they dont need the extra protection from crushing. Theres a law that prevents chip companies from including the whole weight of the bag in the price which is why a net weight is always on the bag, so if you're comparing prices, look at the net weight to decide if you're getting the most bang for your buck!

@@seastilton7912 noble gasses are expensive. Nitrogen is also vary stable and doesn't react easily due to its triple bond which is extremely hard to break. It only reacts in extreame pressures and temperatures.
