Mark Knopfler wrote this when Dire Straits was touring in the US going down route 24 in Michigan(a.k.a. Telegraph Road) into Detroit, he was reading the book "The growth of the soil" at the time and he combined the 2 into this song. Funny thing about Mark is also that he is left handed. He also never had guitar lessons and finger picks. The album version of this song is actualy longer, just over 14 minutes.

in my humble opinion, the superlative to describe the skill level of Mark Knoffler, and the contribution of the rest of the group, has not been conceived yet !! They are that good ! THis Alchemy live Concert, again for me, is the greatest live rock album of all time ! I was lucky enough to have been in at the beginning in the 70's, when they hit the ground running with Sultans of Swing, I am now 77 years old, and I listen to them most days. A term used occasionally these days is " Supergroup !! - Well, Dire Straits are without doubt, a " Supergroup "

i'm so grateful that I grew up with this music! Not only was Mark a guitar virtuoso, but he was also a skilled story-teller, song-writer and composer for the band. Nevertheless, he always made sure to give all of the band members a chance to shine. Fun Fact: In addition to all of that, his unique sound, the fact that he is a finger-plucking genius, and his ability to produce complex emotions and nuanced transitions with and through his guitar... Mark was actually left handed but was playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! This performance showcases the breathtaking live musicianship of this band and the kind of epic musical masterpiece they could collectively produce. Another very different but spectacular example of Mark's talent is also on display in "Once Upon a Time in the West, also from 'Alchemy Live'. I'd also recommend "Brothers in Arms" both the video and the live performance from "On the Night".

Mark Knopfler is an exceptional balladeer. From the first song on his first album-a little 4 minute tune about walking with and making out with his girl down by the Thames-to this incredible opus, to his heartbreaking tale of warfare and the brotherhood of all men, ‘Brothers In Arms’, Mark never fails to paint a vivid image with his lyrics, his voice, and his guitar. While, on the basics of lyricsalone, Warren Zevon is my favourite balladeer, when it comes to the whole package, Mark his the man. The lyrics, the voice, the guitar-it’s altogether perfect.

If someone hasn't heard Mark Knopfler's entire catalog they haven't heard all of the best music made in the last 45 years. He really never misses, just some of his songs require a mood or an event for them to register as what they are. Enjoy.

Hi, how ya doing? One of my favorite performances from Mark is the song Brothers In Arms from Dire Straits-Live "On The Night" 1992. Here he uses a Pensa Suhr and the sound he gets out of it is just jawdropping. Also every reactor I've seen who's witnessed this performance said it had a huge impact on them, some were really tearing up. Its regarding the Falklands War and just war in general and the unnecessary suffering. It really is an incredible performance. Anyway cheers, all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸

Mark creates atmosphere with his playing which fits the song itself. The other thing about his guitar solos is that they are part of the song, not just the insertion of some technical wizardry with no relevance.
@NavyDoc5184Reacts7 ай бұрын
I'm glad you brought that up with his solos. I either mentioned, or at least thought it, that it felt like his solos really felt like they served a purpose in a song and weren't there just for the sake of being there.

Great reaction! For your next Dire Straits song, strong vote for "Tunnel Of Love." The live concert from Wembley 85 is truly amazing. The album version outro is what many of us consider the greatest guitar solo ever. You can't go wrong with either version. Mark wrote this about a true event from his teenage years. The Spanish City is an amusement park he would frequent, near his hometown of Newcastle. The story is as poignant as his guitar playing.

First time to your channel so I can't comment to your catelogue but in answer to the question about "what have I been missing?" I'd say real music by real musiciains 60's. 70's. 80's -- no substitutue for authentic musicianship
@NavyDoc5184Reacts8 ай бұрын
I basically tend to gravitate towards music from the 90's and earlier. In at least a couple of my videos I have mentioned that The Beatles are my all time favorites. With that said, there are still quite a few groups that I'm hoping to get familiar with. Dire Straits and Led Zeppelin are prime examples since I new a song or 2 of theirs, but never really dove into what else they've done so these reactions have really been a treat to do.

@NavyDoc5184ReactsАй бұрын
While I do get how it can be annoying, it is actually somewhat necessary for a couple reasons. Firstly, it is a reaction video so commentary usually comes with the territory. Secondly, it helps to ensure that said reaction video is compliant with "Fair Use" in terms of including copyrighted material in the video. In all fairness, one usually watches reaction videos for the reaction. If the viewer wishes to watch the original video without my reaction/commentary, I do provide the link to the original video.
